PASTOR’S CORNER 1 1

Dutch theologian, scripture scholar and prolific author Henri Nouwen first encountered Rembrandt van Rijn’s “The Return of the Prodigal Son” on a poster on the door of an office at the L’Arche community in France. That encounter prompted Nouwen to go to the Her-mitage museum in St. Petersburg, Rus-sia, in order to see the original. There, he received permission from the cura-tors of the museum to be alone with the pain ng. Nouwen spent hours in prayer-ful contempla on, the result of which was his fine book The Return of the Prodigal Son (Doubleday, New York: 1992) Hoping to know a similarly prayerful experience, I visited the Hermitage a few years ago and sought out Rembrandt’s pain ng. I don’t know if the pain ng has been moved since Nouwen sat before it, but it hangs now in a stairwell , and there is no chance of stopping before it to take it all in. With the thousands of visitors that crowd their way through the Hermitage, one can hardly get a good glimpse, let alone pause for quiet con-templa on. In order to make the best of my visit, I went up and down that stair-well, pushed along by the crowd un l I lost energy to con nue. With each glimpse of the pain ng, I longed for more. At first, I went away from that en-counter frustrated and disappointed. Only later and gradually did I realize what Rembrandt and Nouwen were communica ng, each in his own way—and how my own experience fit in with their insights. God, the forgiving and merciful Father, is there, ever-present, ever welcoming each and all of us. As we go up and down through all the “staircases” of life, and as we go from

heights to depths, God remains constant, our center, our focus, our home where we shall always find a welcome. Throughout their long and checkered history, the people of Israel knew well the experience of coming home to God. From the me they were called to follow Moses into the desert and then onward to the land promised them by God, a strong sense of homecoming urged them on. When they sinned and turned their backs on their Creator and Redeemer, God did not relent. Time and me again, God’s mercy brought them home to healing and forgiveness. As is reported in today’s first reading from Joshua, God’s mercy was celebrated each year on the feast of Passover. Then, they re-membered the story of their beginnings and praised the God who never ceased calling them home. This truth is reflected all throughout the sacred texts and especially in the chosen for Lent. During this season of fas ng, prayer, penance and special a en veness to the poor, we are shown mercy as we remember the extent of God’s love revealed to us in Jesus. Paul tells us in his Corinthian correspondence (second reading) that through Christ, we and all the world are reconciled to God. All has been made right; all has been made new. Moreover, those who are blessed with such a gi are thereby

charged by God with the ministry of rec-oncilia on: “Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.” This is indeed the season for making things right with family, friends and all others. Turning again to the uniquely Lucan parable of the prodigal son, we might sense an invita on to find ourselves in the text. With whom do you iden fy at this me in your life? Are you the wayward son, whose dreams of a good, happy and wealthy life evaporated in a pigsty in a foreign land? Now returned home in shame and sorrow, he is disheveled, kneeling before his father. He knows he has dishonored his father and himself. He knows he does not deserve it, but he relies on the goodness of his father and surrenders himself to his love and mercy. Or perhaps you see yourself in the du ful but resen ul elder son? His an-ger makes him bi er; he refuses to re-joice or share in the celebra on because he doesn’t understand his father’s love. Do any of us see ourselves in the fa-ther? Any parent can sympathize with this generous man whose child’s ac ons hurt him, even cut to the quick of who he was. We can sympathize—but can we be as welcoming and forgiving? This is the challenge put before each of us today and everyday. Sr. Sue Mosteller, a companion and fellow community member of Henri Nouwen at Daybreak (L’Arche communi-ty) in Richmond Hill, Ontario, once told him, “Whether you are the younger son or the elder son, you have to realize that you are called to become the father.” And so are we all.

FOURTH SUNDAY OF LENT The book of Joshua tells of the Israelites coming into the Promised Land, where they no longer needed to be fed with manna as in the desert. They had been wandering much longer than expected because of their unfaithfulness. But now they are forgiven, and so celebrate the Passover with food from the land. Then we hear the Gospel parable about another feast. This one is also a celebra on of forgiveness, for the prodigal son has returned to his father, and the father's forgiveness shows us how willing God is to forgive us. That's where we end the parable, right? Wrong. The parable con nues with the older son's complaint about a feast for his brother. That son cannot forgive his brother and is angry at the father for welcoming the prodigal back. This is where we come in. Most of us have no trouble asking God's forgiveness. But we may have trouble forgiving oth-ers. We are so used to thinking in terms of jus ce that we are not sa sfied with forgiveness. When I have been hurt, I feel like hi ng back. So we have to ask ourselves whose idea of jus ce we live by. Is it the human expecta on of an eye for an eye? Or is it God's jus ce, which is mercy and forgiveness? When someone cuts you off in traffic, do you feel like firing the photon torpedoes, or offering forgiveness? The Golden Rule could be "Forgive others as you would be forgiven." Jesus gave his life for the sins of the world. Do we have the right to ask for more? Tom Schmidt Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co

If a child learns about touching safety, they will be able to re-spond to boundary viola ons in the best way possible and to talk about these situa ons with a trusted adult.
