Sr. Kathleen

Goodbye and Thank You

There is an old French proverb that states, “Every par ng is a li le death.” When someone of the stature of Sr. Kathleen Burns parts, it is much more than a li le death. It is the loss of a person who has given much to St. Cornelius & several other parishes in a wide range of minis-tries. As Jesus says “The greatest among you, is the one who served the rest. (MT 23:11) We have been blessed to have a woman of her caliber with us for 20 plus years. She is highly educated in Theology and Spirituality. She is an excellent teacher and is she is selfless. What she does is not about her, but about conveying the message and spirit of the Gospel. As St. Paul says, “In season and out of season.” She is a person of remarkable energy, always well-prepared as she; Introduced people to a love of the scriptures in her Bible Study classes Inspired all involved in RCIA (Rite of Catechumens and Ini a on of Adults) Con nuing educa on for the teachers in our school and those of neighboring parishes Led our Taize Prayer throughout the year and during the Easter Tridium Retreats prior to First Communion and Confirma on Evenings of Reflec on with women and men Confirma on Classes Individual Spiritual Direc on Group Book Study Working with the Altar Servers and Lectors Encouraged many to take an ac ve role in ministry Forma on of Sisters in her own and other communi es and much, much more. She has, during this me, been a constant and life-giving presence in our community. Just as we have, the Generalate of the Sisters of Notre Dame will be blessed by her presence, her love of people and her acumen.

THE PROPHET’S PROFIT THIRD SUNDAY OF ADVENT Old Testament prophets were not very popular. Most were killed or exiled because they chal-lenged people to follow God's commands. John the Bap st suffered the same way. So what kept the prophets going? First of all, the prophets had faith in God. They believed that God spoke through them, that God would protect them and support them. Second, they had pa ence. They kept going when people rejected their preaching. Some prophets had to be pa ent with their own weaknesses. The third gi of the prophets was hope, hope that by keeping God's commands, God's people would be renewed, along with all of crea on. Our first reading is an example of such hope, with its descrip ons of deserts becoming gardens and the sick and disabled being healed and strengthened. So what do we learn from those prophets? First, we need to keep our faith in God strong. We need pa ence, and not just with our kids. We need to be pa ent with our-selves and with God. Finally, the reading from Isai-ah gives us hope that God will open our eyes of faith, clear our ears to hear God's word (Isaiah 35:5), and "meet him with joy and glad-ness" (Isaiah 35:10).
