FROM THE PASTOR'S DESK: FATHER PAUL CAOWednesday January 6 was a sad day for our country as we saw the violence happening at the U.S

Capitol. Cardinal Cupich sent out a statement against the violence and the rioting at the Capitol. He said: “What has been unfolding at the Capitol today should shock the conscience of any patriotic American and any faithful Catholic. The eyes of the world look on in horror as we suffer this national disgrace.”(See his full statement on page 6.)

Pope Francis also condemned the violence that broke out at the U.S Capitol building on Wednesday. Let us pray for peace and healing that we will be united as one country and work together to promote peace and justice. Here is his prayer for peace:

Lord God of peace, hear our prayer!

We have tried so many times and over so many years to resolve our conflicts by our own powers and by the force of our arms. How many moments of hostility and darkness have we experienced; how much blood has been shed; how many lives have been shattered; how many hopes have been buried… But our efforts have been in vain.

Now, Lord, come to our aid! Grant us peace, teach us peace; guide our steps in the way of peace. Open our eyes and our hearts, and give us the courage to say: “Never again war!” “With war

everything is lost.” Instill in our hearts the courage to take concrete steps to achieve peace.

Lord, God of Abraham, God of the Prophets, God of Love, you created us and you call us to live as brothers and sisters. Give us the strength daily to be instruments of peace; enable us to see everyone who crosses our path as our brother or sister. Make us sensitive to the plea of our citizens who entreat us to turn our weapons of war into implements of peace, our trepidation into confident trust, and our quarreling into forgiveness.

Keep alive within us the flame of hope, so that with patience and perseverance we may opt for dialogue and reconciliation. In this way may peace triumph at last, and may the words “division,” “hatred,” and “war” be banished from the heart of every man and woman. Lord, defuse the violence of our tongues and our hands. Renew our hearts and minds, so that the word which always brings us together will be “brother,” and our way of life will always be that of: Shalom, Peace, Salaam! Amen.

Pauline F. Cordell On Monday January 4, Bishop Jeff Grob celebrated the funeral mass for a long–time dedicated parishioner, Pauline Cordell. Fr. Dominic Clemente and I concelebrated the Mass. Pauline was very involved in the Arts and Environment committee at St. Celestine for over 20 years. She was an exceptional liturgical artist and had helped to decorate inside and outside the church for all the liturgical seasons especially Christmas and Easter. Our church always looked very elegant and beautiful which made our parishioners look forward to coming to church during Christmas

and Easter. She spent many hours preparing and always made sure everything came out perfectly. She was a perfectionist and wanted the best–decorated and the most beautiful church in the whole world. I remember the time before Easter was the most stressful time for Pauline. She had to stay up late until 2 AM on Good Friday to finish the Easter decorating in Church and get ready for Holy Saturday and the Easter Vigil. See examples of her work on the next page.

I am sure nobody can replace her—we will always remember her for her dedicated ministry. Pauline also made all the Easter Candles for many years at St. Celestine and when last year she couldn’t make it because of her health, she donated the money to buy the Easter Candle. Pauline was very generous with her time, talent and finances to our parish. She was a good model of faith and a great disciple of Christ. Let us give thanks to God for her 82 years on earth, her dedication to making the church beautiful, and pray that she will now join with the Lord for eternity in Heaven.

As Jesus said: “Well done, my good and faithful servant. Since you were faithful in small matters, I will give you great responsibilities. Come, share your master’s joy.” May she rest in peace!

May the Lord bless you and St. Mother Theodore Guerin Parish!

    Be safe and stay healthy!

    In prayer,

    Fr. Paul

    SPEAK, LORD, WE ARE LISTENING

In today’s first reading God keeps calling out in the night to a sleeping boy. Neither the boy, Samuel, nor his teacher, Eli, understands who is calling. But God’s persistence convinces them. Samuel is then ready—not ready yet to do anything, but ready to listen. “Speak, for your servant is listening” (1 Samuel 3:10).

In the Gospel Jesus is out teaching. Various people notice him and begin to gather around. They soon become disciples and, like the young Samuel, are ready—not ready yet to do anything, but ready to listen. “Speak,” they say, “we are listening.”

God’s voice is always with us, awake or asleep. It swirls around us like fog on a waterfront, enveloping us, gently urging us to wake up, to listen. Awareness of the voice comes first; then willingness to listen; then, in time, the decision to act, to live according to God’s word.

Let’s ask today for the ability to keep our ears open so we don’t miss God’s voice. © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

    SAINTS AND SPECIAL OBSERVANCES

At several points during the liturgy, the presider greets us with the words, “The Lord be with you.” These simple words are not like the greetings that we exchange all day long—our “good mornings,” our “hellos” and “how are yous.” This liturgical greeting has roots deep in the Old Testament. In the book of Ruth, the words “the Lord be with you” are spoken by Boaz to the harvesters who are laboring in his fields (2:4); in the book of Judges, an angel speaks similar words to Gideon (6:12), where they are words of promise: for soon Gideon will lead his oppressed people to victory and freedom. For us, the words become a greeting of peace, a prayer that the Lord will indeed be with us, and a reminder of his promise to be with us always, to the end of the world (Matthew 28:20). Our response—“And also with you,” soon to be “And with your spirit”—returns to the presider this prayer for the Lord’s presence. As we know from the scriptures, a prayer for the Lord’s presence is no small thing, for when God comes in our midst, God brings healing, grace, and challenge. God’s presence transforms us.

ON “WHO’S ON FIRST?” AND LISTENING, AND FOLLOWING

In Abbott and Costello’s old comedy sketch “Who’s on First,” Abbott is identifying the players

on a baseball team and their positions for his sidekick, but the players’ odd names (Who’s on first, What’s on second, I–Don’t–Know’s on third)

confuse/frustrate Costello. The schtick comes to mind now because today’s first reading from 1 Samuel is Who’s on First–esque, as noted by the late Scriptures writer Reverend Roger Karban.I suppose the old priest Eli would be Abbott, and Samuel––about eleven years old by some biblical scholars’ assessment––would be Costello. Samuel is asleep in the temple. God calls to him. Samuel hears the call, but thinking that it’s his temple guardian, answers “Here I am” and runs to Eli. “Here I am,” he says again, and “You called me.” Of course, Eli responds “I did not call you. Go back to sleep.” This goes on and on––surely to Samuel’s Costello–like confusion/frustration––before Eli figures out that God is calling the boy.

Costello: Who’s playing first? Abbott: That’s right.

And perhaps even God finds humor in this (biblical) schtick when––after calling the boy for the fourth time––Samuel finally responds directly to God, saying, “Speak, for your servant

is listening.” There is something very powerful in this, and as much as I like the Who’s on First comparison, Samuel’s words give me serious pause. Henry David Thoreau once observed that the greatest compliment ever paid to him was that when someone had asked his opinion on something, the asker actually “attended to” Thoreau’s response. Think about that in the context of listening to the Christ.

Listening is elemental to any relationship, and Jesus alludes to this with his (Thoreau–connected) “whoever has ears ought to hear.” But while listening is easy in concept, it is difficult in practice. I can’t speak for anybody else, but sometimes I find myself just trying to think of what to say next instead of focusing on what's being said to me. An old maxim holds that no one is as deaf as the man who won’t listen, and someone famous once noted that “listen” and “silent” have the same letters (the corollary to which could be the counsel often attributed to Will Rogers: “Never miss a good chance to shut up”).

At first blush, it seems that the two disciples of John the Baptist [Andrew, by name and John (Zebedee’s son), by tradition] in

today’s Gospel aren’t listening, either. Oh, they’re listening well enough when John’s observation that the Lamb of God is walking by prompts the pair to follow Jesus. When Jesus turns, however, to ask, “What are you looking for?” they answer the question with a question, and an apparently unrelated one: “Rabbi, where are you staying?” Seems like an odd thing to say, given the moment (“I did not call you. Go back to sleep” and Who’s playing first? That’s right). But like Eli and Abbott, Andrew and John answer truly, knowing here that they want to get to know this Jesus, to be close to him, to be where he is. “Behold, the Lamb of God” the Baptist says. That’s right.

    STATEMENT FROM CARDINAL CUPICH

Released on January 6, 2021 on the attack on Democracy at the U.S. Capitol

What has been unfolding at the Capitol today should shock the conscience of any patriotic American and any faithful Catholic. The eyes of the world look on in horror as we suffer this national disgrace. For many months we have witnessed the deliberate erosion of the norms of our system of government. Peaceful protest is a sacred right. It has been an essential component of much social progress over the course of human history.

But violence is its opposite. Violence in the service of a falsehood is worse. Please join me in praying for the woman who was shot during the rioting, and who has died, and for law enforcement who protect us against mob rule.

We pray for peace at this bracing moment in U.S. history, a history that has been marked by one of democracy’s greatest virtues—the peaceful and orderly transition of power. May our elected officials heed the counsel of their better angels to stand up for the Constitution they swore to defend, to speak the truth, and to recognize threats to democracy, no matter their source.

May God’s love suffuse our political life together, reminding all Americans that politics is the peaceful resolution of conflicting points of view. This is our tradition as a democratic nation—and we undermine it at our own peril.

    CAN YOU VOLUNTEER?

We need volunteers to assist with various aspects of our parish reopening plan. If you are high school age or older and are healthy with no underlying health conditions, please consider assisting with funerals, baptisms, weddings, reconciliation, and daily or Sunday Masses.

Funerals are held Monday through Saturday at both churches, usually at 10 AM and 11:30 AM.

Weddings are held on Saturday afternoons in both churches. Baptisms are held on Saturdays and Sundays at both churches, usually in the early afternoon.
