THE LONG XUYEN DIOCESE
OF VIETNAM
The Diocese of Long Xuyen covers two provinces of An
Giang and Kien Giang plus parts of two districts that
belong to the City of Ccan Tho. This region locates in the
most southwestern corner of Vietnam in the Mekong Delta
that shares borders with Cambodia.
The Long Xuyen Diocese currently has over 234,000
faithful among approximately 4.2 million people or 5.57%,
lower than the national average. It spreads out to 185
parishes in a region of about 6,500 square miles. We
currently have 301 priests including 30 religious ones,
about 300 religious sisters, 97 seminarians, 184
preparatory students and nearly 1,900 catechists.
In 1954, the population of the faithful in this area was
about 30,000. That was before the influx of the Catholic
political refugees from North Vietnam moving into this
fertile farming land. The official church records showed
that the above number has increased to 93,739 in 1964.
Again, we are caring for over 234,000 faithful nowadays.
Viet Nam’s national population is shifting from
countryside to more industrial cities or further into isolated
rural land. The latter is of our most concern since many
Catholics are moving away from their home parishes to the
new land where there are neither churches nor catechetical
schools.
The Long Xuyen Diocese has to build up to 5 chapels and
many classrooms each year to accommodate these new
Catholic communities. We also must train many new
catechists and evangelizing volunteers.
WE NEED YOUR HELP AND SUPPORT!
Please let us be the extension of your arms to help these
poor brothers and sisters of ours as well as to touch the
non-Christians in the region who are hungry for the
GOOD NEWS of CHRIST and the LOVE of God.
We will have a missionary
visit our parish the weekend of August 18/19.
It is customary and fitting to remember
loved ones who have died with memorial
donations to a favorite cause or charity. In
this way, the memory of the deceased is honored and a good
work, either civic or religious, is perpetuated. There are
numerous charities that have been traditionally designated for
such purpose.
At times, we are also offered donations to these funds to honor
particular individuals at special times of the year or to
commemorate an event in their lives.
Memorial donations to the Remembrance Fund are restricted to
the betterment and furtherance of our worship and our place of
worship - the Church, as the needs present itself, or as
determined by the Pastor.
We are grateful to the following who have donated to St. Joseph
Remembrance Fund:
In Remembrance of Judith Landers
Bob & Sandy Hedderman Leona Sawka
Irene Petkaitis Shirley B. Cmara
In Remembrance of Edmond Dube
George & Marie Dixon
In Remembrance of William Lindsay
Betty Jean Ray & Family William & Gail Klopfer
In Remembrance of Donald Higgins

Lovingly Offered for Julia Meglin
by Sister, Nellie
Altar flowers have been offered at St. Joseph
Church with unending love, honor and
friendship for Julia Meglin from her sister,
Nellie Meglin.
Please consider offering a small prayer today,
knowing how truly blessed we are
understanding that mutual respect we all have
for one another in a loving family.
The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary
(A Holy Day of Obligation - August 15) The church
has always held to the belief that Mary was
assumed, body and soul, into a heavenly state, even
though the belief was not declared as dogmatic until
1950.

Each year on August 15
th
, the church celebrates
the Solemnity of the Assumption of the
Blessed Virgin Mary (to use the official name for
this day); it’s the day when we remember that
Mary was taken (“assumed”) into heaven, body
and soul, after she died. You will not find this story in the
Bible. However, a tradition handed down from the earliest
days of the Church says that Mary died in Jerusalem and
was buried in a tomb. But when the apostles opened
the tomb again, her body was gone. Why would God take
Mary’s body and soul into heaven? In part, because Mary is
special to God; she said “yes” to becoming the mother of
Jesus. But God also wanted to show us that one day, all of us
will share in the bodily resurrection of Jesus.
Mary is the first person in the Church to experience the
resurrection in its fullness.
The Blessed Mother is our spiritual Mother – she is always
at our side, giving us nourishment and hope, beginning at
the moment of our spiritual birth at Baptism and
throughout our life.
At the entrances of the church you’ll find a coloring page and a
word find that have the Hail Mary on them please take these
home to color and complete.

Pray the Hail Mary before and aer you complete the page, and
remember to come to Mass on Tuesday evening or Wednesday
to celebrate one of the Church’s feast days dedicated to our
Blessed Mother!

Do you know the other Feast Days devoted to the Blessed Virgin
Mary?
