SAINTS AND SPECIAL OBSERVANCES Sunday: Second Sunday of Advent Monday: Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary Tuesday: International Human Rights Day Wednesday: St. Damasus I Thursday: Our Lady of Guadalupe Friday: St. Lucy Saturday: St. John of the Cross

Our Final Home in Heaven Perfection may not happen until we’re finally united with God, but eternity isn’t something that begins after we die. Once born, every one of us is an immortal being with an eternal destiny. Baptism was our first taste of God’s life, instilling supernatural grace into our souls. But the process of perfection continues until the day we enter the heavenly courts, a spiritual maturation that mimics our physical growth from infancy to adulthood. Although perfection can happen only through God’s power, we have a part to play. Our main job? To get rid of whatever keeps his grace from having its maximum impact on our life as it brings us spiritual maturity. But here’s the kicker: it’s not enough to progress personally. We’re supposed to help others toward perfection, too. (It turns out that we actually are our brother’s keeper.) This is how we fulfill the whole law: loving God with all our heart and loving our neighbor as ourselves (Mt 22:36-40). We’re all part of the same human family that God desires to save and make a part of his divine family (1 Tm 2:4, Gal 3:28), because at the end of the day, that’s what the Church is—God’s family. This truth struck me deeply at the Easter Vigil in 1998 when I was received into the Catholic Church...I realized I had become a part of the family of God in a new and deeper way through the sacraments. Suddenly, I didn’t feel quite so alone. This was the biggest family reunion I had ever attended. Of course, being part of a family comes with responsibility. Just as parents encourage their children to look out for and take care of each other, so too are we to watch out for our brothers and sisters in Christ. You and I have a responsibility to push ourselves and each other to heights of holiness, to our final home in heaven.

Matthew Leonard

Advent Wreath Prayer for the

Second Week of Advent

Stir up our hearts, O Lord, to prepare the ways of Thine only-begotten Son, that through His coming we may be worthy to serve Thee with purified minds.

Who livest and reignest, with God the Father, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God,

world without end. Amen.
