St. David’s Episcopal Church1015 Old Roswell Rd.Roswell, GA 30076770-993-6084www.stdavidchurch.org

Everything we have is a gift from God.

Stewardship is the life blood of a parish. It begins with the

recognition that everything we have is a gift from God, and we

are called as people of faith to use all of our resources – our time,

our talent and our money – in ways that will honor God. We had

a wonderful visual reminder of the commitment to stewardship at

St. David’s just a few Sundays ago, when over seventy

parishioners were commissioned as Sunday School teachers.

That is a commitment of both time and talent. These are areas

where St. David’s is thriving. But we can do even better.

To that end, the preaching and teaching in the Rector’s

Forum for the entire month of September will focus on the

meaning of stewardship in the life of our community. Over one

hundred parishioners have volunteered to be trained as

stewardship canvassers. Many of you will be called on. The

fruit of this will be a great deepening of stewardship throughout

our whole parish community.

Next week you will receive a Stewardship Packet. In it

will be descriptions of all the opportunities offered at St. David’s

for spiritual growth and ministry. Since we take seriously the

full scope of stewardship, you will be asked to make five pledges

for the coming year.

A pledge of time and talent to your own spiritual growth,

through a class, Bible study or fellowship group.

A pledge of time and talent to at least one internal

ministry at St. David’s.

A pledge of time and talent to at least one outreach

ministry at St. David’s.

A pledge of time to invite unchurched friends, neighbors

or co-workers to come to St. David’s.

A financial pledge to ensure the health and well-being of

the parish.

As you are well aware, St. David’s is in a severe

financial situation because of expenses related to Jeffords

Fellowship Hall. The Vestry and Rector are working hard to

create an appropriate budget for next year that will be sensitive to

both our fiduciary responsibility and our call to serve God

through the life of the parish. That is where your prayerful

commitment to St. David’s and the call to every Christian to be a

good steward will be crucial for our future together.

Our hope is that you will return your pledge card (a

stamped envelope will be provided) by September 30th. If we

haven’t received your pledge by then, you will be contacted by

one of our canvassing teams so that they can visit you to discuss

stewardship and St. David’s.

Ultimately stewardship turns on your relationship with

God. So please be prayerful as you make your commitments. I

know you will be blessed by them.

Faithfully,

Thomas Nolfa

They specifically are looking for the brand Pedigree beef or chicken and rice dry dog food and Whiskas or GoodLife dry cat food. PALS is an Atlanta-based non-profit organization that provides pet care including free food and basic veterinary care, and support to the companion pets of critically ill and disabled and elderly Atlantans. We will also be collecting donations on Sunday morning, Oct. 3, during all services in the main hallway. All donations are tax deductible. Their website is www.palsatlanta.org. We did this collection last year, and you all were very generous—see the photo below with the van full of your donations!

FROM THE MISSION BOARD

Where does the miss ion port ion o f your p ledge go? When you pledge, a portion of your gift goes to feeding hungry people in N. Fulton County, helping local people break the cycle of poverty and homelessness, supporting children in Honduras rescued from abandonment and abuse, sponsoring a seminarian in Msalato, Tanzania to spread the Good News. Your gifts bring hope, encouragement, comfort, and proof that there is a living God. The 2010 Mission budget ($9000) is 0.7% of St David’s operating budget. Imagine what we could do with more. Your generous pledges make a difference. Thank you.

Below is a nice note from the Executive Director of N. Fulton Community Charities:

“The mailman today brought a nice check for $2,000 from St. David’s. With a line out the door today, we really needed it. We have been turning some folks away lately as Assistance funds have been scarce. If there is ever a time when we can come and say thanks in person, please let me know. Please pass along our grateful thanks to those who made this nice check possible.

THE GREENING OF OUR COMMUNITY

The Green Gui ld continues i ts efforts to encourage creat ion

s tewardship in our communit ies

and l ives . My initial contribution to this effort is to increase the reach of St. David’s Green Guild within the parish and out into our communities. During our worship services on September 12th we celebrated a "Green Sunday" by recognizing the beauty and fragility of God's creation and our stewardship responsibilities, and Laura Hartt, a representative from the Upper Chattahoochee Riverkeeper organization spoke at the Rector's Forum. Each one of us individually can make significant contributions to help our environment: energy audits, recycling, conservation, selection of renewable energy sources, etc. However, think how much we could accomplish if we work together as a parish and become leaders in the green movement in the city, diocese, and state! St. David’s is committed to becoming a green parish, and with your help, we can accomplish so much more than if we work alone. Over the coming months you will become aware of our commitment at St. David’s to "being green," and you will see a wide range of opportunities and Green Guild activities in which to participate, both within and outside our parish. Here is a sampling of upcoming activities:

September 18 – Creation Keeper Workshop

Members of St. David’s will participate in a one day, diocesan-wide conference on our call to be good stewards of the environment.

September 19 – Green Guild Meeting (following the 11:15 service in the old parish hall) – all are welcome to join in the Green Guild discussions of our goals for St. David’s green initiatives.

September 25 –"Rivers Alive Clean-Up 2010" at Riverside Park, Roswell (8:00 a.m.-11:00 a.m. followed by a free cookout) – join hundreds of volunteers for the 20th Annual North Fulton Rivers Alive clean-up where we will help remove litter and debris from the Chattahoochee River and surrounding areas. All ages are welcome. Let’s have a great turnout to represent St. David’s at this local event!

The Bless ing of the Animals

The Blessing of the Animals will be held on Saturday, October 2, this year to celebrate the Feast of St. Francis. We are reminded of God’s love for us and all creation by the exemplary life of St. Francis.

We know that your pets are already wonderful, but don’t forget to bring them (suitably leashed, caged, or otherwise restrained or contained) to the church front yard at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday morning, October 2, 2010. The service will take place there and is brief. Each pet and owner receives a blessing.

VESTRY NOMINATIONS OPEN SOON

Nominations will open on Sunday, October 3 and will end on Sunday, October 10

Vestry Nomination Forms will be available at a designated table in the church hallway before and after Sunday services and also in the church office during the week of Oct. 3. You may also email your vote in to the church office by using “[email protected].” The election of the four new vestry members will take place on two Sundays - November 14 and November 21. This should allow all members of St. David’s the opportunity to vote for these very important vestry positions. The following are the requirements for serving on the vestry according to the Diocese of Atlanta Canons & Constitution, Canon 31, Section 6, (d).(1): “Those qualified for election to the office of Vestry Member shall be as follows:

Any confirmed communicant in good standing of the Parish who is not less than eighteen years of age,

a regular attendant at the services of the Church in the year preceding election,

and known by the treasurer to have made and fulfilled a stated financial commitment for church support.”

Election to the vestry is an honor, a privilege, and an awesome responsibility, to which every member gives his or her best effort. Please prayerfully consider those you wish to be members of your Vestry.

WHAT EXACTLY IS STEPHEN MINISTRY?

Stephen Minis try is a ministry in which trained and supervised lay persons, called Stephen Ministers, provide one-to-one Christian care to individuals facing life challenges or difficulties.

Who is Involved? Stephen Leaders are the ones who oversee and direct our Stephen Ministry. We have two Stephen Leaders. They are Johnnie Hall and Janet Conrad. Stephen Ministers are the caregivers. They have engaged in 50 hours of training in Christian care giving, including general topics such as listening, feelings, boundaries, assertiveness, and using Christian resources in care giving. In addition, their training covered specialized topics such as ministering to the divorced, hospitalized, bereaved and aging. Care receivers are the recipients of Stephen Ministers’ care. They are people from our parish who are experiencing divorce, grief, loss of a job, loneliness, illness, or other life difficulties, including persons who are caregivers for others.

What Do Stephen Ministers Do? Stephen Ministers are caring Christian friends who listen, understand, accept, and pray for and with care receivers who are working through a crisis or a tough time.

Are Stephen Ministers Counselors? Stephen Ministers are not counselors; they are trained lay caregivers. Their role is to listen and care—not to give advice or counsel. Stephen Ministers are also trained to recognize when a care receiver’s need exceeds what they can provide. When that happens they work with care receivers to help them receive the level of care they really need.

Can I Trust a Stephen Minister? Trust is essential to a caring relationship, and Stephen Ministers are people you can trust. Confidentiality is one of the most important principles of Stephen Ministry, and what a care receiver tells his or her Stephen Minister is kept in strictest confidence.

What is the Role of the Priests? Priests will always be the primary caregivers, but there is no way our priests can meet all the needs for care. God has called all of us, not just priests, to minister to one another. Stephen Ministry multiplies ministry by turning priests into equippers so they can enable lay people to provide caring ministry as well.

How Much Does It Cost? Stephen Ministry is a care giving ministry available to our members free of charge.

OPEN DOORS, OPEN MINDS

Several Roswell area faith communities are planning a program to deepen ecumenical understanding. As of this writing, these congregations will be participating: Temple Beth Tikvah, Roswell Presbyterian Church, Roswell United Methodist Church and St. David’s Episcopal Church. One or two other congregations may join the program. The goal will be simply to open the doors to each of our houses of worship to welcome our neighbors in an act of discovery of who we are and what we think as religious communities. With so much growth in Roswell, this endeavor is an effort to build bridges among neighbors by introducing how we worship. Each house of worship will invite up to twelve people to participate in this program for this year. Each month, the group will visit a different church or synagogue for a worship service. After the service, the host church/synagogue will offer a lunch for the participants of this program. Representatives of the clergy are expected to host the group when the program is held at his/her own church. Naturally, the clergy participating in this effort are encouraged to visit the other houses of worship when possible, but it is not necessary.

During this lunch, participants will be encouraged to sit with others not from their own church/synagogue. After some time being together, the clergy member will begin to facilitate a conversation that will touch upon how they worship at that church/synagogue, how the denomination started, what makes their house of worship special, etc. There ought to be time for questions and comments from the participants.

We are looking for twelve individuals from St. David’s who would like to participate in this program. It you are interested, be in touch with Ken Swanson at [email protected].

Search Committee Update EXCITING TIMES IN THE SEARCH PROCESS!!

The Parish Profile has now been accepted by the Bishop’s office and St. David’s vestry. With this important step our infor-mation has been entered into the national church data base which will lead to our receiving potential candidate names in the very near future. In preparation, the search committee has been busy writing initial contact letters, practicing reading sample candidate docu-ments and discussing interview questions. Our consultant will also take us through some mock interview exercises. Do you have the name of a priest you would like to recommend? Now is the time! To submit a recommendation please use the Search Committee email address [email protected] providing name and contact information (home address, if known). You may also send a recommendation to Beth King, 200 Shadowledge Lane, Roswell, GA. 30076. Keep in mind that once a name has been offered, it then becomes confidential information and cannot be dis-cussed. At this time we anticipate the deadline for receiving names to be Oct. 11 and receipt of all documents by Oct. 29.

Considering this exciting progress, we again ask that you, our parish family, keep our work continually in your prayers, asking God’s wisdom, grace and direction.

With gratitude and blessings,

Rector Search Committee

WHAT IS A PARISH NURSE?

The comments below are taken from a publication entitled An Episcopalian Answers Questions About Health Ministry and Parish Nursing written by Jean Denton, RN and published by the National Episcopal Health Ministries.

What is a Parish Nurse? A Parish nurse is one or more registered nurse(s) (RN) who have one foot in the spiritual world of the

church, and one foot in the physical world of medicine. The Parish nurse ministers in ways that reunite the mind, body and spirit and facilitates parishioner’s more complete understanding or his/her health experience. AS the current health care system is disease-oriented and not wellness focused, the Parish nurse can use many tools to bring about healing. At St. David’s, Gail Greene is your Parish Nurse and is assisted by Julie Koetzle, RN, also a parishioner.

So what is Health Ministry? Health Ministry is a living witness to the healing activity of God through the local congregation, encouraging whole-person health through

o Integration of body, mind and spirit o Increased self-knowledge o Personal responsibility and o Interdependence among God’s people

Health ministry is the entire congregation in intentional ministry focusing on both healing and health in combination with the Christian traditions. Health ministry seeks to weave together the “cure of body” with the “cure of soul”. There is a great deal of theological grounding for health ministry including creation, incarnation, stewardship, salvation and suffering.

So what’s the difference between the two? They fit closely together, actually. Parish nursing focuses more on the role of the nurse and ministering as an individual. Health ministry is much broader in scope, focusing on the entire congregation’s health. This ministry doesn’t rely on one person. And while pastoral care is certainly a very significant par t of health ministry, a nurse can add additional insights that may be very helpful to a parishioner beyond the clergy’s interventions. In our case, our virtual “Walk to Camino de Santiago” is a great example of a health ministry activity as it is encouraging a healthy lifestyle grounded in faith, as well as camaraderie among parishioners.

So what does a Parish nurse do?

• Assess health needs

• Provide Health education

• Make referrals

• Coordinates volunteers (flower guild, Caring Committee, etc)

• Support individuals and the whole

• Advocate for individual and community health

• Actively communicates with the clergy to receive referrals and report activities.

What does a Parish nurse NOT do?

• The Georgia Nurse Practice Act does not allow a Parish nurse to provide hands on care as this requires the oversight of a physician.

• Violate confidentiality. This can be an awkward part of daily life in the church as the Parish nurse is an active member of the congregation. When given permission, the Parish Nurse may give limited information but generally, the best way to get updates on a particular person’s status is to ask that person or their family.

• Thank you and please feel free to contact the clergy or myself if a Parish nurse can be of any assistance to you either through a personal visit, phone call or to provide information or if you have an interest in being involved in any way. Gail Greene, RN, BSN, FCN [email protected] 770-640-6396
