CONFIDENCE IN THE LORD We are nearing the end of the liturgical year. Today’s readings remind us that our own lives will draw to a close one day, and we can be certain that the Lord will encourage, strengthen, and save us—both now and at the last. The astonishing story of the Maccabees invigorates our faith as we behold an entire family willing to die rather than deny the Law of Moses. The psalm response echoes the faithful cries of the Maccabees: “I call upon you, for you will answer me, O God.” That same confidence appears in Saint Paul’s letter to the Thessalonians. “The Lord is faithful,” he testifies; “he will strengthen you and guard you from the evil one.” In the Gospel, Jesus explains just how long God’s protection will endure. The children of God whom God guards, Jesus says, will live forever like angels. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

PERSPECTIVE We must often draw the comparison of time and eternity. This is the remedy of all our troubles. How small will the present moment appear when we enter that great ocean! —St. Elizabeth Ann Seton

    day of the year. —Anonymous

    WEEK AT A GLANCE

    In God's Hands

As Catholics, we are taught to rely on God. We pray for His guidance, and that He will watch over us. We pray that we can discern His will to help us with our decisions.

Discern His will? That's not always easy! Complex problems, multiple alternatives, difficult choices… God gave us free will, we make our own choices, and often times His guidance is not obvious or evident. There are many influences, some helpful, some not so much, some confounding. In the end, we take in all these influences, evaluate our choices, and pray for heavenly guidance to make the right decision.

That's the way it is with the Renew My Church (RMC) process. The decision-makers at the Archdiocese have the fate of St. Dismas and St. Anastasia in their hands. What influences will they listen to? What information are they receiving to help them make an informed decision? How will they discern God's will?

One of the influences they are getting is the voice of the parishioners. Our thoughts, our opinions, our desires. I truly believe the decision-makers are listening to us. They need to know how passionate we are, how much we care about our church, how strongly we believe in our community, and that keeping St. Dismas open while we unite with St. Anastasia is the best thing for the greater community of Waukegan. The more our voices are heard, the louder we are, the greater our influence.

My thanks and gratitude to those who submitted RMC feedback forms. Your thoughts and concerns have been compiled and are being shared with the decision-makers. I urge all of you to continue to be good stewards for St. Dismas. Share your time, talent, and treasure, as well as letting your voices be heard in support of our church. This is just the first step, so stay tuned for more details as the RMC process progresses.

    Prayerfully yours, Mark Matias

    Congratulations !!
