SPEARFISH CANYON Northern Hills | Highway 14A runs North-South through Spearfish Canyon in the Northern Hills. Beautiful limestone cliffs line both sides of the highway. It is also the BEST stretch of highway in the Hills for parking along the shoulder and fishing for Rainbow or Brown Trout.
NEEDLES HIGHWAY Southern Hills | After the road to Mt. Rushmore, this may be the one of the most popular roads in all the Hills. The Needles Highway (listed as Highway 87, no one calls it that) starts off Hwy 385 about 4 miles South of Hill City. It starts with a steady back and forth climb up to Sylvan Lake, and then snakes through the Needles, the highest section of the Hills. Be prepared to go slow because traffic will crawl through some of these parts. Highway 14A runs North-South through Spearfish Canyon in the Northern Hills.
IRON MOUNTAIN ROAD Central Hills | Just minutes out of Keystone, on the way to Mt. Rushmore, Highway 16A will take you to Custer State Park. This is Iron Mountain Road, complete with pigtail bridges and tunnels. Take the leisurely drive all the way to Lakota Lake, a quiet, out-of-the-way lake with big trout and few people. Continuing South will take you to Custer State Park. But for some great overlooks, turn around and head back to Keystone-the same route will give you a different perspective. Coming from the Southeast, the tunnels perfectly frame Mt. Rushmore as you travel through them. Morning hours provide the best views.
SCENIC CONNECTORS Nemo Road (Northern Hills) This is the scenic route between Rapid City and Deadwood. Highway 40 between Keystone and Hermosa (Central Hills) An open road stretch, best experienced on a calm, clear evening.
Rimrock Highway/Highway 44 West (Central Hills) This is you best route into Rapid City. Canyon Lake, on the edge of Rapid City, it also is a great spot for a picnic lunch.
Highway 16 past Mount Rushmore (Central Hills) Instead of taking the Mount Rushmore exit, continue west toward Hill City and you’ll see some beautiful granite outcroppings to the south.
Custer State Park (Southern Hills) Ride on miles and miles of roads with your best chance to see wildlife.
Some roads bear slowing down: watchcurves and heavy traffic all throughout the rally region, (South Dakota and Wyoming).

Motorcycles traveling on I-90 should exit at Rapid City and follow Hwy 16 Southwest to Keystone and then Hwy 244 to Mt Rushmore. Coming from the South follow Hwy 385 North to Hwy 244, which is the road leading to the memorial.
