Are you guilty of spiritual stockpiling? Spiritual stockpiling isn't an

endless rotation of rosaries and novenas. It's accumulating emo-

tional "goods" to meet your needs. Perhaps it's a collection of ma-

terial objects you treasure. Maybe it's a preoccupation with money.

It could also be relationships, making sure there's always enough

friends and connections to never really feel alone. It's our tendency

to let things add up so that we won't quite need God to fulfill our

inner life. Yet in this Sunday's Gospel, we have that inescapable

petition from the Our Father. "Give us each day our daily bread."

This life isn't an immediate arrival. And as much as we might try to

shore up possessions and pleasures, we know the journey is un-

predictable. Give us this day our daily bread implies enough for the

next set of steps, but not enough to stockpile. So here's the big

question: Do we trust God to give us what we need? After all,

"What father among you would hand his son a snake when he

asks for a fish?... how much more will the Father in heaven give

the Holy Spirit to those who ask him?" At the Last Supper, Jesus

said he would never leave us orphaned. God will not abandon us.

And surely He wouldn't ask us to pray for what He does not intend

to give.

Of course, sometimes our prayers for daily help can seem to go

unanswered. Today's Gospel has advice for that, too. "I tell you...

he will give up to him whatever he needs because of his persis-

tence." Our spiritual stockpiling increases our self-reliance and

decreases our openness to God's possibilities. Be persistent in

your pursuit of God! Trust that He will keep His promises to pro-

vide for us, today and always.

St. Edward's students are formed in character & leadership:

• Catholic education is the school for the human person.

• The whole work of the formation of the student would lack a foundation with-

out suitable human formation.

• The child is called to be a living image of Christ, to come "to the stature of the

fullness of Christ" (Eph 4:13).

We form students to be balanced persons: strong,

free, capable of bearing weight, to love truth, to be

loyal, to respect humanity.

The Census asks questions

that provide a snapshot of the nation.

ernment, how much funding your com-

munity receives, and how your commu-

nity plans for the future. When you fill

out the Census, you help:

• Determine how many seats your state gets in Congress

• Guide how more than $675 billion in federal funding is dis-

tributed to states and communities

• Create jobs, provide housing prepare for emergencies and

build schools, roads and hospitals.

Make sure YOU are counted!

ST. LUKE’S HOME HEALTH & HOSPICE

On one occasion an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus.

“Teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal

life?”

“What is written in the Law?” he replied. “How do you read

it?”

27

He answered, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your

heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and

with all your mind’

[a]

; and, ‘Love your neighbor as your-

self.’” The Good Samaritan spent his time, attention and

money on the man in the gutter. The others saw the man,

and passed by on the other side.

Please don’t pass by on the other side. St Luke’s Hospice

needs compassionate, caring hospice volunteers to visit and

sit with hospice patients, relieving their caregivers to go

shopping, have lunch with a friend, or just have some quiet

time. Call Marie Sharp at 208-814-7603 or email at

[email protected] for more information.

L A E S Q U I N A D E L PA D R E

No
