Thanksgiving and the Forgiveness of Sins

Let’s be saints! A couple weeks ago we strove to be saints by doing holy things with holy people. This keeps us in

communion with God and one another. We are at the end of our catechesis on the creed and we are at the end of the

liturgical year. So let’s conclude these current reflections with the fact that we as saints give thanks and believe in the

forgiveness of sins to be in communion with those in everlasting life.

The most obvious place we give thanks for the forgiveness of sins is at the celebration of the Eucharist. Eucharist comes

from a Greek word that means thanks in its simple form. In this act of thanks we ask God to forgive our sins. We start

this at the Penitential rite by confessing that we have done wrong and ask the Lord to have mercy on us. We profess in

the creed that we believe in the forgiveness of sins and life everlasting. We pray to the Father in the Lord’s Prayer to

forgive us as we forgive others. And again we pray to Jesus, the Lamb of God, who takes away sin, to have mercy on

us. I hope that you apply this to your lives especially during this week with your family. Give thanks to God for all he

has given you and ask pardon even from the members of your family for the times that you have offended so that as a

family you can have a closer communion with each other as saints.

This week open your eyes to the communion we share as a communion of saints knowing that we as Catholics are more

connected than we might realize at first. We are a communion of saints. Let stay in this communion through giving

thanks for the forgiveness of sins .

Acción de Gracias y el perdón de los pecados

¡Seamos santos! Hace un par de semanas nos esforzamos por ser santos haciendo cosas santas con personas santas. Esto

nos mantiene en comunión con Dios y con los demás. Estamos al final de nuestra catequesis sobre el credo y estamos al

final del año litúrgico. Concluyamos estas reflexiones actuales con el hecho de que nosotros, como santos, damos gra-

cias y creemos en el perdón de los pecados para estar en comunión con aquellos en la vida eterna.

El lugar más obvio por el cual damos gracias por el perdón de los pecados es en la celebración de la Eucaristía.

Eucaristía viene de una palabra griega que significa gracias en su forma simple. En este acto de gracias le pedimos a

Dios que perdone nuestros pecados. Comenzamos esto en el rito Penitencial confesando que hemos hecho mal y pedi-

mos al Señor que tenga misericordia de nosotros. Profesamos en el credo que creemos en el perdón de los pecados y la

vida eterna. Roguemos al Padre en el Padrenuestro para que nos perdone a medida que perdonamos a los demás. Y nue-

vamente rogamos a Jesús, el Cordero de Dios, que quita el pecado, que tenga misericordia de nosotros. Espero que

aplique esto a sus vidas especialmente durante esta semana con su familia. Dé gracias a Dios por todo lo que le ha dado

y pida perdón incluso a los miembros de su familia por los momentos que ha ofendido, para que como familia pueda

tener una comunión más íntima con los demás como santos.

Esta semana abre los ojos a la comunión que compartimos como una comunión de santos sabiendo que nosotros, como

católicos, estamos más conectados de lo que podríamos darnos cuenta al principio. Somos una comunión de santos.

Dejen permanecer en esta comunión dando gracias por el perdón de los pecados

"Our Mother's House": Help for the Victims of Human Trafficking

Global Health Promise is a Portland-based nonprofit organization that focuses on the need of moth-ers who have been trafficked or in prostitution and their children. The co-founder and Director, Brian Willis, is a parishioner at St. Mary’s Cathedral. He has operated a program for these families, called “Our Mother’s House”, in Portland for the last 10 years.

Mr. Willis also works with organizations in other countries to develop similar programs to help end this tragic practice. Our Mother's House is seeking volunteers for a drop-in-center in Portland as well as people with experience in the nonprofit sector. Current open positions are secretary for the board and treasurer. St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry Advent is nearly here. Many of us follow the custom of

keeping an Advent calendar. This year we would like to en-

courage everyone to try something new – an Advent Basket.

Here’s how it works.

Beginning on the first day of Advent put out a basket or

cardboard box. Be sure to put it in a place where you will

notice it every day. Each day during Advent place some-

thing in the box/basket that someone can use to feed their

family. This can be a non-perishable food item or a roll of

paper towels or maybe a special treat. As you collect your

items, say a prayer for the one who will use what you gather.

This will benefit you and the person in need. The idea is to fill the basket with household items and food by

the time Christmas Eve arrives. If you have a family, you can share the responsibility of filling the basket –

assign each family member a day of their own to add to the donation.

The final act is to bring the full basket to church on Christmas Eve. The items we collect will be used by St.

Vincent de Paul Food Pantry as the year ends and the new year begins. Lots of people find that cupboards are

getting bare at this time of year and St. Vincent de Paul is getting more requests for help. You can help by

sacrificing a little to help a family in need.

de Adviento. Así es como funciona.
