la lectura de la carta Veritatis Splendor de San Juan Pablo II.

El coloquio de Jesús con el joven nos ayuda a comprender las condiciones para el crecimiento moral del hombre llamado a la perfección: el joven, que ha observado todos los mandamientos, se muestra incapaz de dar el paso siguiente sólo con sus fuerzas. Para hacerlo se necesita una libertad madura («si quieres») y el don divino de la gracia («ven, y sígueme»).

La perfección exige aquella madurez en el darse a sí mismo, a que está llamada la libertad del hombre. Jesús indica al joven los mandamientos como la primera condición irrenunciable para conseguir la vida eterna; el abandono de todo lo que el joven posee y el seguimiento del Señor asumen, en cambio, el carácter de una propuesta: «Si quieres...». La palabra de Jesús manifiesta la dinámica particular del crecimiento de la libertad hacia su madurez y, al mismo tiempo, atestigua la relación fundamental de la libertad con la ley divina. La libertad del hombre y la ley de Dios no se oponen, sino, al contrario, se reclaman mutuamen-te. El discípulo de Cristo sabe que la suya es una vocación a la libertad. «Hermanos, habéis sido llamados a la libertad» (Ga 5, 13), proclama con alegría y decisión el apóstol Pablo. Pero, a continuación, precisa: «No toméis de esa libertad pretexto para la carne; antes al contrario, servíos por amor los unos a los ot-ros» (ib.). La firmeza con la cual el Apóstol se opone a quien confía la propia justificación a la Ley, no tiene nada que ver con la «liberación» del hombre con respecto a los preceptos, los cuales, en verdad, están al servicio del amor: «Pues el que ama al prójimo ha cumplido la ley. En efecto, lo de: No adulterarás, no matarás, no robarás, no codiciarás, y todos los demás pre-ceptos, se resumen en esta fórmula: Amarás a tu prójimo como a ti mismo» (Rm 13, 8-9). El mismo san Agustín, después de ha-ber hablado de la observancia de los mandamientos como de la primera libertad imperfecta, prosigue así: «¿Por qué, preguntará alguno, no perfecta todavía? Porque "siento en mis miembros otra ley en conflicto con la ley de mi razón"... Libertad parcial, parcial esclavitud: la libertad no es aún completa, aún no es pura ni plena porque todavía no estamos en la eternidad. Con-servamos en parte la debilidad y en parte hemos alcanzado la libertad. Todos nuestros pecados han sido borrados en el bautis-mo, pero ¿acaso ha desaparecido la debilidad después de que la iniquidad ha sido destruida? Si aquella hubiera desaparecido, se viviría sin pecado en la tierra. ¿Quién osará afirmar esto sino el soberbio, el indigno de la misericordia del liberador?... Mas, como nos ha quedado alguna debilidad, me atrevo a decir que, en la medida en que sirvamos a Dios, somos libres, mientras que en la medida en que sigamos la ley del pecado somos escla-vos» 27.

Dear Parishioners:

After this beautiful time of Christmas, let us restart with the reading of the letter Veritatis Splendor by Saint John Paul II.

(Veritatis Splendor #7) Jesus' conversation with the young man helps us to grasp the conditions for the moral growth of man, who has been called to perfection: the young man, having observed all the command-ments, shows that he is incapable of taking the next step by him-self alone. To do so requires mature human freedom ("If you wish to be perfect") and God's gift of grace ("Come, follow me"). Perfection demands that maturity in self-giving to which human freedom is called. Jesus points out to the young man that the commandments are the first and indispensable condition for having eternal life; on the other hand, for the young man to give up all he possesses and to follow the Lord is presented as an invitation: "If you wish...". These words of Jesus reveal the par-ticular dynamic of freedom's growth towards maturity, and at the same time they bear witness to the fundamental relationship between freedom and divine law. Human freedom and God's law are not in opposition; on the contrary, they appeal one to the other. The follower of Christ knows that his vocation is to free-dom. "You were called to freedom, brethren" (Gal 5:13), pro-claims the Apostle Paul with joy and pride. But he immediately adds: "only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love be servants of one another" (ibid.). The firmness with which the Apostle opposes those who believe that they are justified by the Law has nothing to do with man's "liberation" from precepts. On the contrary, the latter are at the service of the practice of love: "For he who loves his neighbour has fulfilled the Law. The commandments, 'You shall not com-mit adultery; You shall not murder; You shall not steal; You shall not covet,' and any other commandment, are summed up in this sentence, 'You shall love your neighbour as yourself' " (Rom 13:8-9). Saint Augustine, after speaking of the ob-servance of the commandments as being a kind of incipient, imperfect freedom, goes on to say: "Why, someone will ask, is it not yet perfect? Because 'I see in my members another law at war with the law of my reason'... In part freedom, in part slav-ery: not yet complete freedom, not yet pure, not yet whole, be-cause we are not yet in eternity. In part we retain our weakness and in part we have attained freedom. All our sins were de-stroyed in Baptism, but does it follow that no weakness re-mained after iniquity was destroyed? Had none remained, we would live without sin in this life. But who would dare to say this except someone who is proud, someone unworthy of the mercy of our deliverer?... Therefore, since some weakness has remained in us, I dare to say that to the extent to which we serve God we are free, while to the extent that we follow the law of sin, we are still slaves".27

From the Pastor : 18. Those who live "by the flesh" experience God's law as a burden, and indeed as a denial or at least a restriction of their

own freedom. On the other hand, those who are impelled by love and "walk by the Spirit" (Gal 5:16), and who desire to

serve others, find in God's Law the fundamental and necessary way in which to practise love as something freely chosen and freely lived out. Indeed, they feel an interior urge — a genuine

"necessity" and no longer a form of coercion — not to stop at the minimum demands of the Law, but to live them in their

"fullness". This is a still uncertain and fragile journey as long as we are on earth, but it is one made possible by grace, which

enables us to possess the full freedom of the children of God (cf. Rom 8:21) and thus to live our moral life in a way worthy

of our sublime vocation as "sons in the Son".

This vocation to perfect love is not restricted to a small group of individuals. The invitation, "go, sell your possessions and give the money to the poor", and the promise "you will have treasure in heaven", are meant for everyone, because they bring out the full meaning of the commandment of love for neigh-bour, just as the invitation which follows, "Come, follow me", is the new, specific form of the commandment of love of God. Both the commandments and Jesus' invitation to the rich young man stand at the service of a single and indivisible charity, which spontaneously tends towards that perfection whose measure is God alone: "You, therefore, must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect" (Mt 5:48). In the Gospel of Luke, Jesus makes even clearer the meaning of this perfection: "Be merciful, even as your Father is merciful" (Lk 6:36). "Come, follow me" (Mt 19:21) 19. The way and at the same time the content of this perfection consist in the following of Jesus, sequela Christi, once one has given up one's own wealth and very self. This is precisely the conclusion of Jesus' conversation with the young man: "Come, follow me" (Mt 19:21). It is an invitation the marvellous gran-deur of which will be fully perceived by the disciples after Christ's Resurrection, when the Holy Spirit leads them to all truth (cf. Jn 16:13). It is Jesus himself who takes the initiative and calls people to follow him. His call is addressed first to those to whom he en-trusts a particular mission, beginning with the Twelve; but it is also clear that every believer is called to be a follower of Christ (cf. Acts 6:1). Following Christ is thus the essential and pri-mordial foundation of Christian morality: just as the people of Israel followed God who led them through the desert towards the Promised Land (cf. Ex 13:21), so every disciple must fol-low Jesus, towards whom he is drawn by the Father himself (cf. Jn 6:44).

This is not a matter only of disposing oneself to hear a teaching and obediently accepting a commandment. More radically, it involves holding fast to the very person of Jesus, partaking of his life and his destiny, sharing in his free and loving obedience to the will of the Father. By responding in faith and following the one who is Incarnate Wisdom, the disciple of Jesus truly becomes a disciple of God (cf. Jn 6:45). Jesus is indeed the light of the world, the light of life (cf. Jn 8:12). He is the shep-herd who leads his sheep and feeds them (cf. Jn 10:11-16); he is the way, and the truth, and the life (cf. Jn 14:6). It is Jesus who leads to the Father, so much so that to see him, the Son, is to see the Father (cf. Jn 14:6-10). And thus to imitate the Son, "the image of the invisible God" (Col 1:15), means to imitate the Father. (Veritatis Splendor Continues #8)

Del Parroco : 18. Quien «vive según la carne» siente la ley de Dios como un peso, más aún, como una negación o, de cualquier modo, como una restricción de la propia libertad. En cambio, quien está movido por el amor y «vive según el Espíritu» (Ga 5, 16), y desea servir a los demás, encuentra en la ley de Dios el camino funda-mental y necesario para practicar el amor libremente elegido y vivido. Más aún, siente la urgencia interior —una verdadera y propia necesidad, y no ya una constricción— de no detenerse ante las exigencias mínimas de la ley, sino de vivirlas en su plenitud. Es un camino todavía incierto y frágil mientras es-temos en la tierra, pero que la gracia hace posible al darnos la ple-na «libertad de los hijos de Dios» (cf. Rm 8, 21) y, consiguiente-mente, la capacidad de poder responder en la vida moral a la sub-lime vocación de ser «hijos en el Hijo».

Esta vocación al amor perfecto no está reservada de modo exclu-sivo a una élite de personas. La invitación: «anda, vende lo que tienes y dáselo a los pobres», junto con la promesa: «tendrás un tesoro en los cielos», se dirige a todos, porque es una radicaliza-ción del mandamiento del amor al prójimo. De la misma manera, la siguiente invitación: «ven y sígueme», es la nueva forma con-creta del mandamiento del amor a Dios. Los mandamientos y la invitación de Jesús al joven rico están al servicio de una única e indivisible caridad, que espontáneamente tiende a la perfección, cuya medida es Dios mismo: «Vosotros, pues, sed perfectos como es perfecto vuestro Padre celestial» (Mt 5, 48). En el evangelio de Lucas, Jesús precisa aún más el sentido de esta perfección: «Sed misericordiosos, como vuestro Padre es misericordioso» (Lc 6, 36).

«Ven, y sígueme» (Mt 19, 21)

19. El camino y, a la vez, el contenido de esta perfección consiste en la sequela Christi, en el seguimiento de Jesús, después de haber renunciado a los propios bienes y a sí mismos. Precisamente ésta es la conclusión del coloquio de Jesús con el joven: «luego ven, y sígueme» (Mt 19, 21). Es una invitación cuya profundidad mara-villosa será entendida plenamente por los discípulos después de la resurrección de Cristo, cuando el Espíritu Santo los guiará hasta la verdad completa (cf. Jn 16, 13).

Es Jesús mismo quien toma la iniciativa y llama a seguirle. La llamada está dirigida sobre todo a aquellos a quienes confía una misión particular, empezando por los Doce; pero también es cierto que la condición de todo creyente es ser discípulo de Cristo (cf.Hch 6, 1). Por esto, seguir a Cristo es el fundamento esencial y original de la moral cristiana: como el pueblo de Israel seguía a Dios, que lo guiaba por el desierto hacia la tierra prometida (cf. Ex 13, 21), así el discípulo debe seguir a Jesús, hacia el cual lo atrae el mismo Padre (cf. Jn 6, 44).

No se trata aquí solamente de escuchar una enseñanza y de cumplir un mandamiento, sino de algo mucho más radi-cal: adherirse a la persona misma de Jesús, compartir su vida y su destino, participar de su obediencia libre y amorosa a la voluntad del Padre. El discípulo de Jesús, siguiendo, mediante la adhesión por la fe, a aquél que es la Sabiduría encarnada, se hace verdader-amente discípulo de Dios (cf. Jn 6, 45). En efecto, Jesús es la luz del mundo, la luz de la vida (cf. Jn 8, 12); es el pastor que guía y alimenta a las ovejas (cf. Jn 10, 11-16), es el camino, la verdad y la vida (cf. Jn 14, 6), es aquel que lleva hacia el Padre, de tal manera que verle a él, al Hijo, es ver al Padre (cf. Jn 14, 6-10). Por eso, imitar al Hijo, «imagen de Dios invisible» (Col 1, 15), significa imitar al Padre.

Catechesis for Adults and Youth and candidates of Con-firmation and RCIA started on January 13 at 7:30pm. Will follow all Mondays and Thursdays at 7:30pm. NEWS: Starting from February 3rd, Weekday Masses will be on Monday, Tuesday and Friday at 5:30pm. Holy Hour will be added on the Third Thursday of the Month from 5:30pm to 6:30, in-cluding a time for Confessions. The 8am Mass on Sunday is moved to 8:30am, starting on Feb. 9. Sunday’s confessions are moved to 7:45am.
