The Third Sunday of Easter
Our Gospel today is the famous story of Jesus’ appearance on the road to Emmaus. As St. Luke recounts, it was still the first day of the week, that is, it was still the day of the Resurrection. Two disciples were walking towards Emmaus conversing about what had happened in the previous days. Jesus approached and walked with them, but they were impeded from recognizing him. Already this is a lesson to us. How many times has Jesus appeared to us in a form we do not recognize. Perhaps as a person in need or as a person we find unattractive? As the Letter to the Hebrews says, “Do not neglect hospitality, for through it some have unknowingly entertained angels” (Hb 13:2). Jesus feigned ignorance of the events the disciples were discussing, and this to their distress. So they related the story, including the detail of the empty tomb. Jesus seemingly detected a lack of faith in them, and chided them accordingly. Then he explained how the Messiah was to suffer before entering his glory. As they came to their destination, Jesus gave the impression that he was continuing on, but they prevailed on him to stay with them. Then at table, as he broke the bread, their eyes were opened and they recognized him, even as he disappeared. At once they returned to Jerusalem, where they were greeted with the news of the Resurrection and the appearance to Simon to which news they added their own story of recognizing Jesus in the breaking of the bread. This story is one of several in the New Testament that tell of the mystery of the Resurrection. They are important witnesses of the faith. In them the apostles perform one of their key functions in transmitting the Gospel, namely, verifying that the Risen One was the same Jesus whom they had known in his earthly life and ministry. We who believe in Jesus today are indebted to them for this. But as with so much in the Bible, there are layers of symbolism as well. In this case, we have a meditation on the Holy Eucharist. At every celebration of Mass, Jesus again appears to us under the various modes of his presence. He is present in his people; he is present in his priest. He is present in his word; above all he is present in the Eucharistic species of bread and wine. As he did with the disciples on the road to Emmaus, he interprets the Scriptures for us in every Liturgy of the Word and he makes himself known in the Eucharistic breaking of the bread. His message is always a Word of Life for us. The fundamental craving of our heart is a desire for meaning, and he gives us that meaning. Through all the changing elements of our lives, he is the truth that holds us constant. Moreover, he himself is the Bread that satisfies the hunger of our heart, the food that nourishes us and gives us strength. He is broken bread, in the same sense that once his body was broken for us on the Cross. He lives that sacrifice for us even now, and when he is present, so is his sacrifice, redeeming and saving us.

ACA Pledge Drive 2017
This weekend (April 29th & 30th) and next weekend (May 6th & 7th) we will have pledge cards available to fill out after all of the masses for the 2017 Annual Catholic Appeal. Our goal this year is $30,268 which is $1,699 higher than last year's goal. The good news is that last year we exceeded the goal and raised over $28,000.
