On behalf of the entire St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic School Staff, we wish you a Happy New Year! May this New Year bring you the blessings of Love, Joy, Health and Peace to you and your family.

Throughout Advent our Catholic School Community Outreach supported many

community projects. Thank you for your generous response supporting the Socie-ty of St. Vincent de Paul Food Drive and The Angel Tree Toy Drive. The many toys donated for the Angel Tree were distributed by our local Society of St. Vincent de Paul . It truly warmed our hearts to see students living the true meaning of Christmas.

As with every New Year, we take stock of our successes and look with wonder on the year ahead. 2017 is filled with promise! We encourage you to work with your children to set goals for themselves in their school work and in all that they do so that 2017 will be a year filled with success and happiness.

At St. Elizabeth Seton School, we will continue to work hard throughout this year to offer a positive, fulfilling experience for all students, as we strive to meet our school improvement objectives.

May God’s love be your source of strength in 2017.

Our School-Wide Advent Food Drive organized by Mrs. Pavelic’s/Abreu’s FDK students and our Grade 8 Student Ambassadors generated an incredible response from our school community.

The community volunteers of the food pantry at St. Raphael’s Church were delighted by the generosity of our school community and noted the quality of our donated items.

St. Elizabeth Seton School students went above and beyond in bringing in their food items as requested. These food donations warmed the bellies of the needy in our own community and the hearts of those whose lives were touched by their generosity.

In addition to this, the response to our Angel Tree Toy Drive was inspiring! Thank you for the many beautiful toys that brightened Christmas morning for children throughout our own community and throughout the City of Burlington.

Special thanks to the volunteers from The Society of Saint Vincent de Paul for helping with distribution and our Grade 8 Ambassadors for their leadership.

Please ensure your children come to school dressed warmly to participate in recess activities. Scarves, hats and mittens are recommended especially on those really chilly days! A number of our primary students are not bringing snow pants to school. Students without snow pants are not permitted to play on the field area when there is snow on the ground. We want all students to have fun in the snow and to have an active recess break. Please send snow pants if your child wishes to play in our field area (when snow is present).

When weather conditions are severe, we may reduce the outdoor playtime, or have indoor recess entirely, but fresh air and exercise are vital components for successful learning; so, we will have the children play outside whenever possible.

Appropriate footwear is essential for participation in our physical education pro-gram. Students are reminded to bring indoor footwear to school.

A reminder that students who require ANY TYPE OF MEDICATION AT SCHOOL need to have a form completed PRIOR to the administration of any medication by school per-sonnel. We cannot dispense medication of any kind without authorization by the parent/guardian. Please see the office for the proper form if at any time during the year your child requires any type of medication at school. Once this form is completed, the medication must be sent in a properly labelled container in order for school personnel to administer and store this medication at school. This applies to both prescription and non-prescription medication.

Thank you for your cooperation and understanding with this matter.

Parents are reminded that our school bell in the morning rings at 8:35am daily. School staff bring the Students into the school at this time so that they can begin instruction promptly at 8:40am. Your child must be at the back of the school in their line up area when this 8:35am bell rings. A staff member will remain at the back doors of the school until 8:40am to let in any students who may be running a minute or two behind. As of 8:40am, these staff members will be heading to their instructional areas to begin lessons for the day. If your child arrives once this staff member has left this posted position, students are to be escorted to the front of the school by their parent/person who dropped them off. Once at the front, these late students can ring the entry buzzer and make their way into the school, stopping at the office first to obtain a late slip for admittance into class.

Parents are also reminded that our yard supervision does not begin until 8:20am daily and that children are not to be dropped off in our school yard areas until 8:20am when a staff member is outside on yard duty (wearing a brightly coloured vest).

In order to protect the safety of all within our building, adult, non-staff members are not to be entering the school using any door other than the front doors by the office at anytime throughout the school day. Our back doors and main entry door are always locked but we have had cases in the last month where parents have entered the build-ing through back door areas when other students/teachers open these doors to exit.

IN ORDER TO PROTECT THE SAFETY OF ALL STUDENTS, ADULTS WHO ARE NOT STAFF MEMBERS MUST NOT ENTER THE SCHOOL THROUH THESE BACK DOORS DURING TIMES LIKE THESE AND MUST ALWAYS USE THE DOOR

LOCATED AT THE FRONT OF THE SCHOOL TO GAIN ACCESS INTO THE BUILDING.

We thank you in advance for your cooperation with this practice put in place to protect the safety of all within our building.

SEAC SOUNDBYTES

Raising awareness of the Special Education process at HCDSB

January 2017

SEAC from a Different Lens!

Over the past year, SEAC has provided important “Soundbytes" on Special Education within HCDSB. The importance of SEAC is our ability to assist the Board in understanding the special needs of exceptional children and youth, and to advise the Board on any matter affecting the establishment and development of special education programs and ser-vices. Essentially, it is our primary responsibility to advise on the Special Education Budget and the Special Education Plan every school year. Now it is time to take a closer look at what takes place at the SEAC meeting. The Special Education Advisory Committee, comprised of school board staff and trustees and representatives of local associations is the “BRIDGE” between those who make decisions about special education services/programs and the exceptional children who receive these programs and services. The parents representing local associations provide a focused, big picture lens on complex issues related to students with special needs and we stand behind several board-wide programs such as “Best Buddies”, “EMPOWER”, “Special Needs Strategy”, “Accessibility related to in-school and playground development”, “Mental Well-being”, “Bullying Awareness” and the “Spirit of Inclusion Awards”. Through a reciprocal and collaborative relationship based on mutual respect, SEAC does not advocate on behalf of individual students or families, but rather advises on matters of significant importance for all children who may need individual-ized and/or specialized programs for learning. One of the highlights to the SEAC year is the selection of the Spirit of Inclusion recipients in March. The Spirit of Inclu-sion Award is a celebration of students across the Board who demonstrate exemplary inclusive behaviour within their school communities. It is an honour for a SEAC member to take part in the Board-wide selection of an elementary and secondary student and then present these students with an award at both a SEAC meeting and then again at the sys-tem wide annual Student Awards of Excellence Ceremony in April. Be sure to check your school newsletter in the Spring to find out who is the winner at your school. SEAC meetings are held monthly (usually the last Monday of each month at 7pm) at the Board office throughout the school year and meetings are open to the public. SEAC meeting dates and times can be found on the Board Event Cal-endar at www.hcdsb.org. We would love to see you there.

Thank you to all parents who supported through their attendance and purchase of tickets, our JK to Grade 6 Christ-mas Performance of “A Christmas Carol” in December. We are thrilled to be able to provide our JK to Grade 6 chil-dren with the opportunity to work with a real performance director throughout the months of September, October and November as they prepare for our Christmas performance. We thank families for purchasing tickets to our show as the money raised from ticket sales goes 100% to off set the cost of putting on a production of this magni-tude. Remaining money owing to the director and the incidental costs (equipment rentals etc.) are funded through money raised in our school’s dance-a-thon. We thank everyone for making our production such a success!!!!
