Mission Statement We, the faith community of St. Bernadette, strive to better know, love, and serve God, through the teachings of

His Son Jesus Christ and the graces provided to us through His Holy Spirit and the Sacraments.

Dear Parishioners,

Quite often when a Navy ship visit a foreign port some members of the crew will take on a community service project. This is a way for the Navy to do some small service for the places the Navy visits. This doesn’t take place everywhere due to security concerns but it happens often enough. The Chaplain’s office would oversee the project and it was gratifying to witness the sailors and marines getting satisfaction out of doing something for others as well for them to able to see for themselves the needs of people in different parts of the world. The first reading from Isaiah and the Gospel passage reminds us all the generosity of God and call to be generous as God is generous. At first reading the Gospel seems a bit unfair to those who worked all day but the teaching is about the God being generous. We sometimes might be bothered about how material wealth is shared or not shared. This passage is about our call as people of faith to react to the Lord’s goodness by being generous ourselves. We live in a world that is not always fair but we are called to respond to act justly and generously and by that demonstrate the goodness of God.

God Bless, Fr. Dave

Please join in prayer for those in recovery from recent natural disasters. A Prayer for Recovery After Disaster

God our Father, in the wake of disaster, visit our places of desolation with your consolation. Bring strength to the weary and courage to those who feel overwhelmed. We believe that you hold our

concerns in your Fatherly care, and that you entrust us to one another as sisters and brothers. Mobilize your people near and far to feed the hungry, shelter the displaced, and protect those in

deepest poverty. As we rebuild what is ruined, may we recover together as a stronger community. We ask this through Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Twenty-fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 4 September 24, 2017

Question of the Week Twenty-fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time

God’s Generosity Reading I Isaiah 55:6-9 (seeking the Lord) Reading II Philippians 1:20-24, 27 (spreading the gospel) Gospel Matthew 20:1-16 (the laborers in the vineyard) Key Passage: [The landowner] said “Take what belongs to you and go; I choose to give to this last the same as I give to you. Am I not allowed to do what I choose with what belongs to me? Or are you envious because I am generous?” (Matthew 20:14–15) Adult: What lessons do you draw from today’s Gospel? How has God been generous to you in this way? Child: Who is generous to you, even when you do not always deserve it?

Reflection It is easy to be troubled by the parable and wonder why the owner is not paying the men for the time spent in labor. Ra-ther than being troubled by this parable we should consider our response to it. Why are we so quick to side with those who labored all day? Reading the parable from the perspective of those who worked just one hour might provide another insight. Do not families of these workers have the same need for food, clothing, and shelter as those who worked longer? Would we deprive them of these necessities just so some can have more?

RESPECT LIFE MONTH

October is Respect Life Month. September 27 to November 5, our community is uniting with hundreds of other cities around the world for the largest and longest coordinated pro-life mobilization: the 40 DAYS FOR LIFE campaign. 40 DAYS FOR LIFE is made up of three components: 1) Prayer and Fasting: all are invited to join for 40 days of fervent prayer and fasting for an end to abor-tion and assisted suicide and for the respect for life in all is stages. 2) Peaceful vigil: stand for life dur-ing a 40-day peaceful public witness outside the Center for Women's Health - 4840 College Blvd, OP, KS. 3)

Community outreach: help take a positive, pro-life message to every corner of our city through media efforts, advocacy and public visibility. On Sunday, October 1st, our parish will once again join Our Lady of Lourdes for the annual LIFE CHAIN. We will stand in silent prayer along Gregory and Blue Ridge Cutoff for one hour- praying that there will be an end to abortion and assist-ed suicide and for the respect for life in all its stages. Come join us at 1:15pm in the OLL parking lot for a blessing before we begin at 1:30. Also during October, we will have a Pack-n-Play in the vestibule of the church to collect new baby items for MOTHERS REFUGE. This will wrap up the Spiritual Adoption Program which began nine months ago. A list of needed items for babies and Moms will be on the Pack-n-Play. If you are interested in participating in any of these events, or have questions, call Karen 924-3731, or Jean 338-1827. Our Parish will once again sponsor a BABY BOTTLE CAMPAIGN for Rachel House (formerly the Women's Clinic) during the month of January. Thank you for your support.
