In place of my article this week, I want to share with you a letter from our new principal. May God bless Ms. Catherine Scotkovsky as she joins the family of St. Eugene Parish

Yours in Christ,

As the new principal of St. Eugene, I am honored and excited to assume this role and continue to grow the school academically, spiritually and as a school community. Although I only started a few weeks ago, it is already apparent to me that this is a caring and welcoming community. I am a lifelong resident of the northwest side of Chicago. I spent the first 25 years of my teaching career as an elementary school teacher at St. James School in Highwood, IL. During that time, I had the opportunity to teach many subjects (physical education, math, science, and religion) to many different grade-leveled students. I also had the opportunity to coach and serve as the St. James Athletic Director for over 15 years. In 2012, I became the principal at St. Ladislaus School. While at St. Ladislaus, I had the incredible opportunity to work with a school community that was in need of a leader that could bring change to the school. Collaborating with the members of the school community, we worked to improve academics, technology, and the marketing of St. Lad’s while also encouraging parents to become active participants in their child’s education. Regarding my management philosophy, I am a firm believer in two-way, open communication. Your input is invaluable to St. Eugene and I want to hear your feedback — the good, the bad and the ugly! Working together collaboratively, we can continue to achieve a positive atmosphere in the school and the community. Working together, I know we will be able to cultivate an environment that allows the students of today to become the leaders of tomorrow. This is my invitation to you — please join me as we continue to strive to make St. Eugene School the model that all other schools emulate. Blessings and Peace, Catherine Scotkovsky [email protected] 773-763-2235

THE BEGINNING OF EVERYTHING Everyone recognizes the truth of good proverbs, and so they endure from generation to generation. The Russians have a surprisingly bold one that fits this Sunday’s Gospel: “Bread is the beginning of everything.” Judging from the first reading, Elijah might have felt that it was too late for bread—too late for life itself. This great prophet was at the end of his rope and endurance. Then, not one, but two angels visit him. One offers food and drink. The other gives startling directions. For Elijah, this food from the angels is bread for his journey. On the strength of the heaven-sent gift of food, he walks to the mountain of God. In today’s Gospel, Jesus offers himself, not just as bread for the journey, but as bread for life itself. He gives his flesh as life for the world. “I am the bread of life” (John 6:48). He is the beginning of everything. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Prayer with Scripture We invite you to an encounter of prayer where you can stop from the hurry of the moment and listen to God through God’s Word, in silence, meditation, ad-oration and contemplation. In this short but intense time, we listen to a talk that introduces us into the understanding of the Word of God, which later, we reflect on and meditate in an attitude of faith, discov-ering what God is trying to reveal to us. The prayer is accompanied by the exposition of the Blessed Sacrament with songs to help the faithful enter more into prayer.

ADORATION of the

BLESSED SACRAMENT Mondays in church 12:00 NOON - 8:00 pm

with Benediction at 7:45 pm

Though our Mother is no longer present with us on earth, having ascended in glory to heaven, yet

in affection she is always with us. Nay, even being there nearer to God, she better knows our miseries; and her pity for us is greater, while she

is better able to help us. Saint Alphonsus Liguori

To increase revenue for weapons, the Islamic State has built up a slave industry by abducting women and girls from Iraq. Price lists have been posted in towns captured by ISIS listing prices of women and girls based on age. Christian Yazidi girls who are between 1 - 9 years old are sold for $172. As the age of slaves increases, the prices decrease - the younger, the better. Slaves are not listed as women and children - they are labelled as Merchandise. Pray for those who have been dehumanized… wear orange!

DRESS APPROPRIATELY FOR MASS As warm weather is here, we would like to remind everyone that Sunday Mass is the most im-portant and solemn event of the week. It is not an “informal occasion.” As a consequence, the appro-priate attire for Mass should be characterized by modesty, dignity, and elegance. Clothing suitable for a picnic, or for the beach, can indicate a lack of respect for the Eucharistic Sacrifice.

THE ASSUMPTION OF THE VIRGIN MARY

To be with Mary in heaven Some days we’d like to be assumed into heaven

with Mary and avoid life’s pain. Until our days are

spent, however, our vocation must focus on this

earth, saying as she said “Be it done unto me ac-

cording to Your will.” May this feast day remind us

not only of Mary’s Assumption into Heaven, but also

of her blessed obedience and willingness to serve

right where she was. May her example light our road

as we travel toward the day we rejoin her in heaven.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION In an age given to slogan T-shirts, one of the last bastions of “dressing up” is the wedding. Everyone seems to stretch toward the old ideal of “Sunday best” for these moments. In our tradition, clothing is immensely important. Coming out of the baptismal water, we are immediately vested with a white garment. “You have clothed yourself in Christ,” the new Christian is told, and a white garment is the token of being born into God’s family. Sadly, this is the last time most Christians wear this garb until their funeral, when the family spreads a pall as a reminder of baptismal identity. Increasingly today, we are seeing the alb as the proper garb for liturgical ministers, men and women. In ancient Rome, sleeveless tunics of varying colors were worn by everyone, and so at baptism the new Christians could be expected to wear their new garb under their everyday clothes. Sleeves were a problem for ancient Romans, who thought they were a barbarian fashion. As is so often the case, eventually the barbarians won the day, and by the third century the long-sleeved garment worn by ministers today was familiar liturgical garb. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

We ask all of our parishioners, if you have a loved one serving in the military,

to please contact the rectory office to give us the name of the soldier, so the

whole parish can pray for your loved one. A book in the church vestibule is

available for inscribing the names of all military personnel. This book will be part of the offertory

procession from now until the war is over.

A PRAYER LORD, HOLD OUR TROOPS IN YOUR LOVING HANDS. PROTECT THEM AS THEY PROTECT US. BLESS THEM AND THEIR FAMILIES FOR THE SELFLESS ACTS THEY PERFORM FOR US IN OUR TIME OF NEED. WE ASK THIS IN THE NAME OF JESUS OUR LORD AND SAVIOR. AMEN

We pray for our loved ones

who are serving in any branch of the Armed Forces during this time of conflict.

OUR MISSION STATEMENT

Our mission as Catholics united in faith at St. Eugene Parish is to help bring God to people and people to

God. Through evangelization, education and being of service to each other, we strive to make our parish

community a holistic community in body, mind and spirit. It is our goal to develop, support, encourage and

empower one another in our parish ministries, so that each person can reach their human and Christian po-

tential. We are enthused about the future of St. Eugene and the whole Catholic Church and we pledge our

participation in that future. We seek dialogue and open communication with all parishioners in fulfilling the

needs of our parish. While recognizing the cultural diversities in our community, we will strive to bring all peo-

ple together in Christ under a common bond of faith, hope and love.
