Make a Call
In the past month I have become aware of several parishioners who were disappointed because either
they themselves, or their loved one, did not receive a visit from one of the priests of the parish. Unfortunately,
in every case, the priest was not notified that someone needed to be visited. Try as we might, in a place the
size of St. Eugene Parish, it is hard to remember who is sick and it is impossible to know who is in the hospi-
tal, unless we are notified.
Some people tell the nurse that they want a visit from one of the priests of the parish. Unfortunately,
the message usually does not get conveyed. Nurses are busy and it is not their responsibility to inform parish-
es. So, in the future, if you have a loved one in the hospital in need of a visit, please make sure you call the
rectory. It is frustrating when people tell me that a loved one has been in the hospital and they have not been
visited. Yet, the person wanting a visit, or the loved one of the person, never inform the rectory that they are
in the hospital.
Every once in a while a parishioner will tell me that another parishioner complained to them about not
receiving a visit from one of the priests of the parish. This baffles me. The person wanting a visit will not reach
out to myself, Fr. Greg, or Fr. Phil but, they will call another parishioner to complain. This is not helpful. It is
not realistic to expect that priests magically know who is sick or in need of a visit. Please, let us keep the lines
of communication open. If you want a visit, need to be anointed, or want to go to confession, you have to
share that information by calling the rectory.

Prayer with Scripture We invite you to an encounter of prayer where you can stop from the hurry of the moment and listen to God through God’s Word, in silence, meditation, ad-oration and contemplation. In this short but intense time, we listen to a talk that introduces us into the understanding of the Word of God, which later, we reflect on and meditate in an attitude of faith, discov-ering what God is trying to reveal to us. The prayer is accompanied by the exposition of the Blessed Sacrament with songs to help the faithful enter more into prayer.

Dietrich Bonfoeffer Today, religious ethnic minorities including Christians are being imprisoned, beheaded, and
crucified by radical groups in Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. We Christians, in that area known
as “people of the cross”, teach our children the gospel of love as Jesus has taught us. Adversely,
these radical groups are grooming children to provide the next generation of jihadist. The strategy
of the extremists includes the abduction and indoctrination of children as young as five years old to
“craft a cadre of fighters that will see violence as a way of life.” Our children and grandchildren will
be facing this wave of violence. In the United States, the future of our children and grandchildren is
already being affected. For example, through social media, bomb-making instruction are available
on the internet. The extremists are recruiting, brainwashing, training and encouraging our most
vulnerable young people to become suicide bombers and to commit other crimes in our own cities
and towns.
In the 1930s-40s the malevolent ideology of the Nazi regime gradually spread throughout
Europe resulting in the death of millions of people. The desire for power, the international
community’s slow reaction against the iniquities, and the silence and complicity of the people
helped to feed the growth of this brutal era in history. History is now repeating itself.
As this evil slowly infiltrates our society we must “not be silent and inactive”. We can
become involved by praying for a conversion of these militants especially by using the power of the
rosary Second, publicize the orange ribbon movement at every opportunity. Orange represents the
color of the jumpsuits worn by our modern day martyrs. Wear orange ribbons, orange articles of
clothing, put an orange ribbon in your window, etc., to show support for ur Christian brothers and
sisters. Together we can help protect our own country especially our children as we keep a
spotlight on the persecution taking place in the Middle East. (ribbons available at all the doors.)

We ask all of our parishioners, if you have a loved one serving in the military,
to please contact the rectory office to give us the name of the soldier, so the
whole parish can pray for your loved one. A book in the church vestibule is
available for inscribing the names of all military personnel. This book will be part of the offertory
procession from now until the war is over.
A PRAYER LORD, HOLD OUR TROOPS IN YOUR LOVING HANDS. PROTECT THEM AS THEY PROTECT US. BLESS THEM AND THEIR FAMILIES FOR THE SELFLESS ACTS THEY PERFORM FOR US IN OUR TIME OF NEED. WE ASK THIS IN THE NAME OF JESUS OUR LORD AND SAVIOR. AMEN

Our mission as Catholics united in faith at St. Eugene Parish is to help bring God to people and people to

empower one another in our parish ministries, so that each person can reach their human and Christian po-
tential. We are enthused about the future of St. Eugene and the whole Catholic Church and we pledge our
participation in that future. We seek dialogue and open communication with all parishioners in fulfilling the
needs of our parish. While recognizing the cultural diversities in our community, we will strive to bring all peo-
ple together in Christ under a common bond of faith, hope and love.
