Father’s Day Prayer

We celebrate Father’s Day this Sunday. As a way to honor those men who have played such an

important role in our lives, I am including the prayer from the book of blessings at the bottom of my article

(prayer is in italics). I would ask, if possible, families pray this prayer when they gather for the celebrations

they have for dad.

My own father passed away back in 1989. I realize that many people no longer have their fathers with

them. However, that does not mean we cannot offer a prayer for them. A father is meant to be a person of

great faith who brings hope to his family. A father brings life and love to his family. Let us show them

kindness, love, and gratitude for all they have done. Let us pray for fathers who have died, that God may

bring them into the joy of his kingdom. Let us pray for fathers that are still with us. Let us tell them how much

they matter and give them an extra hug on their special day.

God our Father, in your wisdom and love you made all things.

Bless these men, that they may be strengthened as Christian fathers.

Let the example of their faith and love shine forth. Grant that we,

their sons and daughters, may honor them always with a spirit of

profound respect.

Grant this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Happy Father’s Day!

THE WIND AND THE SEA Living along the shores of Lake Superior—the “big lake,” as the locals call it—you can often hear the advice, “Respect the lake; don’t take it for granted.” People who know Lake Superior respect its power and watch out for its many moods. Sunken ships and boats crushed into kindling are testimonies to what the lake can do. The readings of this Sunday evoke our memories of the lake, of the mighty Mississippi River, or of the ocean itself. Who but God can control these mighty waters and set limits to their advance? The lake described in today’s Gospel was a body of water subject to sudden storms and churned into dangerous waves by terrible winds. But these mighty agents are subject to God. The sailor and the fisher all respect the water. Even more, they respect the awesome power of the Maker of wind and sea. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

SCHEDULING THE USE OF PARISH FACILITIES AUGUST 2015 THRU JUNE 30, 2016 The calendar year for the use of parish facili-ties by parish ministries is from August 1st through June 30th. During the month of July no events are scheduled. This allows time for the extensive summer cleaning and repairs in the buildings. When summer maintenance projects require August scheduling, part or all of August may also be una-vailable for use by parish and other organizations. The calendar committee will meet after July 1, 2015 to approve the scheduling of events for the months through June 2016. All organizations re-questing space must submit the official scheduling forms (available in the rectory). Forms must be completed in full and returned to the rectory no later than June 30, 2015 No organization should assume that the space and meeting times available in past years will continue to be available during the 2015-16 school year. All groups and parish organizations are, therefore, reminded to await the confirmation of available space for dates submitted before finalizing plans for events.

Prayer with Scripture We invite you to an encounter of prayer where you can stop from the hurry of the moment and listen to God through God’s Word, in silence, meditation, ad-oration and contemplation. In this short but intense time, we listen to a talk that introduces us into the understanding of the Word of God, which later, we reflect on and meditate in an attitude of faith, discov-ering what God is trying to reveal to us. The prayer is accompanied by the exposition of the Blessed Sacrament with songs to help the faithful enter more into prayer.

BLESSED SACRAMENT Mondays in church 12:00 NOON - 8:00 pm

“Jesus has our backs!” Father George Koeune

(Acts 18:9) The Lord said to Paul in a vision: “Do not be afraid. Go on speaking and do not

be silenced, for I am with you. No one will attack you or harm you.”

With the Lord’s encouragement, Paul continued teaching the word of God. Today Pope Francis

implores us not to be afraid to speak out against the rapidly spreading violence imposed on our Christian brothers and sisters in many areas of the world including the United States.

For the Deceased:

ON SUNDAY, JULY 5, THE SICK LIST WILL BE UPDATED.

PLEASE CALL THE RECTORY BY MONDAY, JUNE 29 (10:00 AM)

IF YOU WOULD LIKE A NAME LISTED.

ADDING NAMES TO THE PARISH SICK LIST It has always been the goal of St. Eugene to offer our parish community an opportunity to pray for those

parishioners who are ill and in need of our prayers. We have tried to keep close track of these names for our Bulletin as they are made available to us.

However, now we face an important privacy issue, very much like the issues faced by hospitals, health institutions, and certainly by other parishes.

We cannot (by law) publicly let our parish community know the health status of any of our members without their permission.

We appreciate the fact that often friends, neighbors, and acquaintances wish to do something special for a person who is ill, and ask to place their name on the list to be prayed for. While their intentions are surely good, we simply can no longer accept names in this manner.

Names for the sick list placed in the Bulletin have to be called in by the person who is ill, or by a member of their immediate family. At the time they call in the name, they will be asked whether they are the sick person him/herself, or a member of their family, and if they give permission for the name to be placed on the list. They will be asked for the correct spelling of the sick person's name. If a family member, they will be required to give their name for our records.

Thank you for your patience regarding this process. We wish to do all we can to offer our parish community the opportunity to offer prayers for those who are ill — but we must also be cognizant of the fact that all members of our congregation are entitled to their privacy in this regard.

For Dads ... If you share in all their interests, all their happi-

ness and cares; encourage without nagging; show your love in thought & prayers;

If you help them find their talents and are proud when they employ them, yet teach them grace in failures, to accept, if not enjoy them

If you show by good example what is right and what is wrong; If you teach them independence so they learn to get along; If you see their need for freedom and yet help them realize that there's something warm and last-ing in old -fashioned family ties;

If you listen to their problems with an under-standing heart; and your influence goes with them even when you're far apart; Then your children will respect you and in you they'll always see, the kind of fine and special Dad you hoped and prayed you'd be!

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION When you are thinking about traditions in the Church, 1563 is a “watershed” year. The Council of Trent began a reform of the liturgy that put an end to old practices and set many of our present practices in place. For the first time, engaged people were ab-solutely required to appear before their parish priest, and to exchange consent in his presence along with two witnesses. To this day, Catholics are obliged to this form, namely: to marry another Catholic in the presence of a priest (or deacon) and two witnesses, unless dispensed from the law. The Council really didn’t forbid customs and ceremonies that added life to the celebration, but the mood of the times was dark and somewhat austere. Practices like the blessing of the marriage bed or using a canopy for the nuptial blessing started to fade away, as did the custom of bringing the presents for the couple to the church and the addition of fiddlers and jugglers to the procession. The Council of Trent tried to pre-serve local customs, but the longterm effect was to standardize celebrations everywhere in the world. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

We ask all of our parishioners, if you have a loved one serving in the military,

to please contact the rectory office to give us the name of the soldier, so the

whole parish can pray for your loved one. A book in the church vestibule is

available for inscribing the names of all military personnel. This book will be part of the offertory

procession from now until the war is over.

A PRAYER LORD, HOLD OUR TROOPS IN YOUR LOVING HANDS. PROTECT THEM AS THEY PROTECT US. BLESS THEM AND THEIR FAMILIES FOR THE SELFLESS ACTS THEY PERFORM FOR US IN OUR TIME OF NEED. WE ASK THIS IN THE NAME OF JESUS OUR LORD AND SAVIOR. AMEN

We pray for our loved ones

who are serving in any branch of the Armed Forces during this time of conflict.

OUR MISSION STATEMENT

Our mission as Catholics united in faith at St. Eugene Parish is to help bring God to people and people to

God. Through evangelization, education and being of service to each other, we strive to make our parish

community a holistic community in body, mind and spirit. It is our goal to develop, support, encourage and

empower one another in our parish ministries, so that each person can reach their human and Christian po-

tential. We are enthused about the future of St. Eugene and the whole Catholic Church and we pledge our

participation in that future. We seek dialogue and open communication with all parishioners in fulfilling the

needs of our parish. While recognizing the cultural diversities in our community, we will strive to bring all peo-

ple together in Christ under a common bond of faith, hope and love.
