From the Pastor’s Desk… This Thursday, November 1st, is ALL SAINTS DAY – a Holy Day of Obligation. This means that all Catholics are obliged to attend Mass on this day to celebrate and honor those men and women that have led and modeled for us, exemplary lives of faithfulness and solid Christian living. We will offer three Masses on Thursday, November 1st - 6:30 and 9:00 a.m. and at 6:30 p.m. Please note that there will not be an anticipatory Mass on Wednesday night, October 31st. On Friday, November 2nd, we will celebrate the Commemoration of all of the Faithful Departed with ALL SOULS DAY. Our regular morning Masses at 6:30 and 9:00 a.m. will be celebrated, and in addition, we will also be celebrating a special evening Mass at 7:00 p.m. on this day. All in our parish are invited and encouraged to attend this evening Mass to honor and remember your deceased loved ones. This Mass will be a powerful expression of remembrance for those who have gone before us, not only in our parish community but within our own families as well. At this Mass all will be given the opportunity to personally acknowledge their deceased loved ones. We hope that this time of prayer together will renew our hope and heal our pain and grief. In the sharing of our grief, we believe that our grief is diminished. May our loving God continue to bless and comfort you as you mourn the loss and celebrate the memories of your loved ones. In addition, if you would like to remember your deceased loved ones in another special way, you may write their names in the spaces provided on the All Souls Day envelope that was included in your October Sunday envelope packet. The envelopes can be placed in the regular Sunday offering or brought to the parish office. The names that are submitted will then be published in our parish bulletin within one or two weeks (this is so we can gather all the names submitted that will come in after All Soul’s Day) and placed upon the altar during the month of November and throughout the year. Also, throughout the month of November you will find a podium draped in purple with a book on it located near the paschal candle at the entrance of the baptismal area. This book is called The Book of Remembrance and/or The Book of the Dead. It will remain in this space for you to write in the names of your deceased family members and friends that you wish to be remembered in prayer throughout the month. It is opened every year at this time and will be removed on the 30th of November. Please feel free to inscribe the name(s) of your loved ones as you wish. This Book is a real symbolic reminder to us all of the connection we still have with our loved ones as they now share in the life we someday hope to attain.

*************** Thank you to all in the parish for your prayers and well wishes while our group of 40 pilgrims made their way through northern France a couple of weeks ago. We were fortunate in that the temps were well above normal enabling us to tour this beautiful country in 70 and 80 degree weather. Some of the places we visited were: Paris, Lisieux and the home of St. Therese, St. Malo, Mont St-Michel, The Chateaux of the Loire Valley, Giverny - and the sites of many of Claude Monet’s Impressionistic paintings, Chartes Cathedral, Notre Dame Cathedral, The Eifel Tower, Sainte Chappell, Bayeux, Normandy and the D-Day Beaches and Museums, the American Cemetery, Blois, Versailles, the Church of the Miraculous Medal among so many other places. Have a great week!

Fr. Rich

JULY 17 - 27, 2020

FOR AN 11 DAY “TREASURES OF THE ADRIATIC & THE

ALPS” TRIP

Austria…Croatia…Slovenia…Italy…Germany

Visiting: Vienna, Graz, Zagreb, Ljubljana, Lake Bled and Venice, Italy

Including the OBERAMMERGAU PASSION PLAY

All are invited to an Informational meeting for our upcoming 2020 Oberammergau Passion Play & Treas-ures of the Adriatic and the Alps Trip here at St. Eugene’s, on Sunday afternoon, November 18th at 5:30 p.m. in the Shaunessy Center Meeting Room. Come and hear about all the neat places we will be seeing and visiting. I can promise you a great time and a much-remembered and cherished experience. At this meeting, you will hear all the details about this trip, be able to ask all your questions, meet some of those that are already signed up and perhaps even sign-up yourself. Because this trip needed to be advertised before I was assigned to St. Eugene, and due to the fact that the Passion Play happens only every ten years, many made their reservations for it early on. There are, however, still some openings available for this trip.

I so look forward to seeing anyone interested in hearing more about this unique trip at this meeting. Our Travel Agent will be present for this meeting. Also, if anyone might be interested in an opportaunity to visit the Holy Land, there are only 4 spaces left for our February 18-28, 2019 Pilgrimage. Give me a call if you would like a brochure.

Fr. Rich Yanos

P.S. Fr. Jim O’Brien is also leading an 11 Day Classical Europe Trip including the Oberammergau Passion Play departing May 31 – June 10, 2020. His itinerary is completely different than mine. His trip includes Hungary, the Czech Republic, Germany and Slovakia. He is also having an information-al meeting for this trip on Monday evening, November 5th at 7:00 p.m. in School Room 110 for those interested in hearing more about his trip.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Today is the feast of the Forty Martyrs of England and Wales, the first representative body of many

Catholics who died for their faith between 1535 and 1679 to be beatified or canonized. Almost all of them died

at Tyburn, a place of public execution near today's Marble Arch in Hyde Park, London. The first to suffer were

Carthusian monks who refused to swear an oath supporting Henry VIII as supreme head of the Church in

England, and the last was Saint Oliver Plunkett, the Primate Archbishop of Ireland. The method of execution

was particularly vile, since the condemned were hanged and their living bodies quartered to be displayed

around London as a horrific warning.

Today, the tree-like gallows provides the design of a religious symbol, the canopy over the altar of the

martyrs in Tyburn Convent. There, at the heart of the bustling city, a monastic community of women practices

contemplative prayer and "spiritual hospitality" in the Benedictine tradition. Oddly, the community is French in

origin; it was expelled from France a century ago when France outlawed contemplative monastic life.

England, where the laws against Catholicism had been lifted, invited the community in. In gratitude to their

new homeland, and in honor of those who gave their lives for the Catholic faith, the nuns came to Tyburn. In

the public crypt, coats of arms stand for each of the 350 martyrs. A Web site visit is possible at

www.tyburnconvent.org.uk. Rev. James Field, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.

CHRISTMAS TROLLEY - FRIDAY, DECEMBER 7

5:30 TO 9:30 PM

MEET AT THE SHAUNESSY CENTER Once again, Altar & Rosary is having the Christmas Trolley to see the sights and Christmas lights! The trolley company has raised the cost of the trolleys this year. The cost is $30 per person and I have secured four trolleys this year which will accommodate 124 people total. I know this is early, but if I do not get the additional trolleys filled, I need to cancel any unused trolleys by November 10, 2018, so Altar & Rosary doesn't incur any cost. Anyone wishing to join us on this tour, please call Lois at: 773-774-1511 no later than November 6th. Payment is due at the time the reservation is made.

Parish Financial Report for the Fiscal Year ended June 30, 2018

We have completed the 2017-2018 fiscal year and have submitted our annual report to the

Archdiocese. The tables printed in this bulletin show the Ordinary Income and Expense for the

Church and School Operations for this and the previous fiscal year.

It has been a very difficult year. Church operations ended the fiscal year with a surplus of

$221,529, down 20% from the previous year. This amount was not sufficient to cover the school

deficit of $423,781, leaving an operational deficit over $202,000. Obviously, this type of deficit is

unsustainable and cannot be repeated. To cover the shortfall, we had to withdraw funds from

savings at the Archdiocese and also tapped into the Educational Endowment Fund. The school

deficit which was covered by the parish translates to an investment of over $2,200 per student

in addition to the amount paid by parents in the form of tuition and fees. While this does

represent a worthy cause and demonstrates our commitment to the education of our children,

those funds were not available for application to ministries which would serve other segments

of our parish community. Part of the expenses at the school went into upgrading technology

and has been very helpful in the dramatic improvement we have witnessed in test results and

other objective measures of school achievement.

Ordinary church giving for Sundays and Holy Days income declined about $25,000 or about

3.4% from the previous year while Christmas and Easter giving showed modest increases.

Total operating expense increased about $10,000 from the previous year. Extraordinary Income

fell sharply as we did not have the unusually high amount of income from memorials and

bequests as previous years.

This was a year in which we saw significant changes in both the parish and school. We

sustained a loss which we had reserves to handle and Fr. Yanos has already ordered that we

increase the monitoring of all expenses and has asked that the Finance Council and the School

Advisory Council be fully apprised monthly of the financial status of the parish and school. We

are determined to restore the firm financial footing which St. Eugene Parish has enjoyed

throughout the years. We are not in debt and were current on all our obligations to the

archdiocese at the close of the fiscal year though our reserves are greatly depleted.

With over 50% of our registered families failing to contribute the equivalent of one dollar a

week, we should all be led to examine the priority we place on practicing our faith which

includes support of the church. Please prayerfully consider what you can do for the support of

this wonderful parish.

We ask all of our parishioners, if you have a loved one serving in the military,

to please contact the rectory office to give us the name of the soldier, so the

whole parish can pray for your loved one. A book in the church vestibule is

available for inscribing the names of all military personnel. This book will be part of the offertory

procession from now until the war is over.

A PRAYER LORD, HOLD OUR TROOPS IN YOUR LOVING HANDS. PROTECT THEM AS THEY PROTECT US. BLESS THEM AND THEIR FAMILIES FOR THE SELFLESS ACTS THEY PERFORM FOR US IN OUR TIME OF NEED. WE ASK THIS IN THE NAME OF JESUS OUR LORD AND SAVIOR. AMEN

We pray for our loved ones

who are serving in any branch of the Armed Forces during this time of conflict.

OUR MISSION STATEMENT

Our mission as Catholics united in faith at St. Eugene Parish is to help bring God to people and people to

God. Through evangelization, education and being of service to each other, we strive to make our parish

community a holistic community in body, mind and spirit. It is our goal to develop, support, encourage and

empower one another in our parish ministries, so that each person can reach their human and Christian po-

tential. We are enthused about the future of St. Eugene and the whole Catholic Church and we pledge our

participation in that future. We seek dialogue and open communication with all parishioners in fulfilling the

needs of our parish. While recognizing the cultural diversities in our community, we will strive to bring all

people together in Christ under a common bond of faith, hope and love.
