Page Two St. Eugene Parish Sixth Sunday of Easter
From the Pastor’s Desk… Today we celebrate the 6th Sunday of Easter. In John’s Gospel, we hear Jesus saying to his disciples, as He says to each of us, “Do not let your hearts be troubled or afraid.” Our limited human understanding cannot begin to understand the immense power of God. Instead of trusting in God, we think we can control every outcome. Do you want to make God laugh? Tell Him your plans. The next time worry, anxiety or fear creeps in, thank God for all He has given you and trust He has a better plan for you.
***************
It doesn’t happen too often that a faculty member spends practically their whole career teaching in one school, but that is not the case with one of our own – Mrs. Mary Beth Glynn. Mary Beth is retiring this year after 42 years spent educating our children here at St. Eugene. To say that this is extraordinary would be an understatement. On behalf of our entire parish and school community, I would like to congratulate Mary Beth on a job well done. You have earned your retirement and deserve some time for rest, renewal and relaxation. We all hope that you will find in the years that lay ahead for you, opportunities to do what your heart is calling you to and what the body is able to. Ha! When you think of the generations of children Mary Beth has taught it is absolutely amazing. All the best to you, Mary Beth! Thank you for giving yourself to all those who have been touched and blessed by your ministry as a dedicated educator. Happy retirement to you!

Just a reminder that this Monday, May 27th, is Memorial Day. Our Morning Mass time this day will be at 9:00 a.m. If you are able, why don’t you consider planning on starting this day off with your fellow parishioners as we honor and give thanks for all the many men and women, living and deceased, who have served our country so valiantly to preserve the freedoms we so much value as American Citizens. I also hope that this weekend, which is often looked at as the unofficial start to summer, will be a time for all in our parish to get out and enjoy some rest, relaxation, time spent with family and/or friends or perhaps even a barbeque. I wish you all a Happy Holiday.

QUUEN OF HEARTS KICK-OFF 1ST DRAW – JUNE 3, 2019
By now most of us are aware of a fundraising effort known as the “Queen of Hearts Raffle”. It has become extremely popular because the prize-pool has the potential to grow rapidly from week to week. Because the prize pool is split 50/50 with both our school and the winner - both benefit. The reason we are beginning this fundraising effort is to help offset the over $250,000 our parish annually provides to operate our school.
May 26, 2019 St. Eugene Parish Page Three
Whether you are a school family, parent, St. Eugene parishioner or not, neighbor, relative, visitor etc.…all have the potential of benefiting from this endeavor, so, please consider supporting this fundraising effort that will both help benefit our school, our parish and the winner as well. The Raffle is a relatively straight-forward game that is based on a board that holds a poker deck of 54 cards (including the 2 Jokers) that are randomly placed face down on the board in rows and numbered 1 -54. Players (must be 18 years or older) buy raffle tickets each week for $5 per ticket (cash only). On the raffle ticket the player will write their name, telephone number, and a number between 1 and 54. These tickets will ultimately be placed in the secured drawing drum. There can be only one name per ticket. One raffle ticket gets pulled from the drum on Monday nights at 9:00 pm at the Draft Bar located at 8221 W. Irving Park Rd. in Chicago. If your ticket is drawn and it is not the Queen of Hearts and you are present for the drawing you will win $100. Your card is then also turned face-up on the game board so that it’s number will not be available to be picked for the next week’s draw. If the Queen of Hearts playing card is behind the corresponding number on the raffle ticket that the player chose, the raffle ticket holder is a winner and wins 50% of the total pot minus the minimal operating expenses (Cost of playing board and tickets). The Queen of Hearts winner does not need to be present for the drawing to win. If the card drawn each week is not the Queen of Hearts, the game rolls over to the following week and the prize grows. After each drawing, all tickets for that week’s drawing will be destroyed and a new game begins. Also, if one of the Jokers is behind the corresponding number on the raffle stub, the game board is ended, and a new board will be started for the next draw. The person who drew the Joker Card will still win $100 if they are present for the drawing. The total prize pool will continue to accumulate weekly until the Queen of Hearts card is drawn. The jackpot amount, based on ticket sales, will be updated and displayed at Draft Bar. Updates will also be posted on St. Eugene’s School and St. Eugene Parish-Chicago Facebook page, as well as the St. Eugene Sunday Bulletin and Website, so that you will know which numbers on the corresponding cards have already been picked from week to week. Raffle tickets will be sold every day at the Draft Bar located at 8221 W. Irving Park Rd., Chicago. We will also be selling tickets at both the School and Parish Offices during regular operating hours and, hopefully, on the weekends after Masses in the vestibule. Please help to make this the successful fundraising effort that it has the potential of becoming by your support and participation. By the time of this printing tickets should be available for purchase at both the school and parish offices to make the 1st drawing on Monday night, June 3rd. The ticket price is $5 each.

THIS WEEKEND
SOCIAL CONCERNS MINISTRY FOOD DRIVE
Today, we will begin loading the truck with our food collection at 11:15 am
(15 minutes prior to the 11:30 am Mass).
THE GIFT OF PEACE “There arose no li le dissension and debate.” Did that happen at work this week? Most of us can recall run-ins with coworkers, even with the boss. Did it happen while socializing with friends? Go easy on poli cs, religion . . . even sports. At home? Even the most peaceful household experiences a li le “give and take” now and then. So where was it that “there arose no li le dissension and debate”? That tumultuous conflict occurred among our first Chris an ancestors, disrup ng the community life of the early church. But today’s Acts of the Apostles shows how beau fully the Holy Spirit, promised by Jesus in today’s Gospel, helped the church achieve a grace-filled resolu on. What evolved was that “reconciled diversity,” o en encouraged by Pope Francis and even envisioned in today’s Revela on passage; and a wondrous experience of Jesus’ promised Gospel gi : “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you.” Copyright (c) J. Prayer with Scripture
We invite you to an encounter of prayer where you can stop from the hurry of the moment and listen to God through God’s Word, in silence, meditation, ad-oration and contemplation. In this short but intense time, we listen to a talk that introduces us into the understanding of the Word of God, which later, we reflect on and meditate in an attitude of faith, discov-ering what God is trying to reveal to us. The prayer is accompanied by the exposition of the Blessed Sacrament with songs to help the faithful enter more into prayer.

IN OBSERVANCE OF MEMORIAL DAY Prayer on Memorial Day Lord Jesus Christ, today we honor the memory of those men and women who gave their all in the cause of free-dom. They worked, fought and died for the heritage of freedom, brotherhood, and honor that they have passed on to us. Help us to recall that you gave up your life for the true freedom of all human beings. Teach us the
meaning of peace and the real battle that must take place in our-selves before it will be won in families and nations. Make us keep your memory in our celebra-tion of communion and pray for the peace and freedom of the
whole world.
Let freedom ring Our fathers’ God to Thee
Author of liberty To Thee we sing
Long may our land be bright With freedom’s holy light Protect us by Thy might
Great God, our King!
LECTOR & EUCHARISTIC MINISTERS Just a reminder, I will be working on the next quarter’s schedule for Lectors & Eucharis c Minis-ters. If there are any dates in July through Septem-ber that you will be unavailable to be a Lector or Eu-charis c Minister, please drop a note in the Sunday collec on basket or leave a note at the rectory and mark it to my a en on (Lois Feist) NO LATER THAN June 1st so I will not schedule you for those dates. If you need to make any changes in the mass mes you requested, please include that as well. I have been looking at the sign-up sheet in the sacristy, and it appears that everyone is signing in. Everyone needs to sign in so that the celebrant knows that we have seven Eucharis c Ministers.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Why is it s ll Easter? The lilies have long since faded. The roots of our tradi on of fi y days of rejoicing from Easter to Pentecost lie in the seven-day rhythm of the Jewish week, drawn from the six days of crea on plus a Sabbath day. A favorite name for the Lord’s Day among our ancestors in the faith was “The Eighth Day,” meaning that in Christ a breakthrough to a new humanity was achieved. With that inner architecture, it makes sense to see Pentecost as a week of weeks, forty-nine days plus one, again signaling that a new age has begun in Christ and the outpouring of his Spirit. The Jewish apprecia on for Pentecost gave rise to the Jubilee year, the fi ieth year, when debts were released and prisoners set free. Today, the character of our Easter Sundays is conveyed by joyful Alleluias and the rite of sprinkling at Mass. Long ago, people expressed this joy by suspending all rules of fas ng and by never kneeling at liturgy. These customs all point to our convic on that me is holy. There is an elegant balance to the Chris an year: forty days of Lenten fast and discipline give way to fi y days of unrestrained rejoicing. That’s why it is s ll Easter! —James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Annual Catholic Appeal Results We are grateful to all our parishioners who have responded generously in response to the Annual Catholic Appeal. St. Eugene parish had a goal of $49,636 established by the Archdiocese of Chicago. As of May 19, 2019, St. Eugene Parishioners have pledged $70, 267 and had already paid $54,475. Many have chosen to fulfill their pledges in installments and hope that they will continue to do so. All funds received by the Catholic Appeal in excess of our goal will be given to the parish and will greatly assist with the needs of the parish. PLEASE CALL THE RECTORY BY MONDAY, JUNE 10TH (9:30 AM) IF YOU WOULD LIKE A NAME TO STAY ON THE LIST.
ADDING NAMES TO THE PARISH SICK LIST It has always been the goal of St. Eugene to offer our parish community an opportunity to pray for those
parishioners who are ill and in need of our prayers. We have tried to keep close track of these names for our Bulletin as they are made available to us.
However, now we face an important privacy issue, very much like the issues faced by hospitals, health institutions, and certainly by other parishes.
We cannot (by law) publicly let our parish community know the health status of any of our members without their permission.
We appreciate the fact that often friends, neighbors, and acquaintances wish to do something special for a person who is ill, and ask to place their name on the list to be prayed for. While their intentions are surely good, we simply can no longer accept names in this manner.
Names for the sick list placed in the Bulletin have to be called in by the person who is ill, or by a member of their immediate family. At the time they call in the name, they will be asked whether they are the sick person him/herself, or a member of their family, and if they give permission for the name to be placed on the list. They will be asked for the correct spelling of the sick person's name. If a family member, they will be required to give their name for our records.
Thank you for your patience regarding this process. We wish to do all we can to offer our parish community the opportunity to offer prayers for those who are ill — but we must also be cognizant of the fact that all members of our congregation are entitled to their privacy in this regard.

We ask all of our parishioners, if you have a loved one serving in the military,
to please contact the rectory office to give us the name of the soldier, so the
whole parish can pray for your loved one. A book in the church vestibule is
available for inscribing the names of all military personnel. This book will be part of the offertory
procession from now until the war is over.

OUR MISSION STATEMENT
Our mission as Catholics united in faith at St. Eugene Parish is to help bring God to people and people to God. Through evangelization, education and being of service to each other, we strive to make our parish community a holistic community in body, mind and spirit. It is our goal to develop, support, encourage and empower one another in our parish ministries, so that each person can reach their human and Christian po-tential. We are enthused about the future of St. Eugene and the whole Catholic Church and we pledge our participation in that future. We seek dialogue and open communication with all parishioners in fulfilling the needs of our parish. While recognizing the cultural diversities in our community, we will strive to bring all people together in Christ under a common bond of faith, hope and love.
