FORTHCOMING EVENTS - WEST DEEPING

The Rectory Dear Friends, I’ve been having that conversation again. The one where someone tells me they don’t come to church regularly, so they can’t possibly turn up just because they need help. So many people seem to think you have to earn support – from the church, from God. You have to come when things are going well to be entitled to ask for help when you need it – even if the help you need is just to sit in a service, to join in the prayers, to feel part of a congregation. That’s not true, of course. One of the things I love about the Church of England is that it’s here for everyone. Everyone in England lives in a parish; everyone is entitled to use their parish church. You don’t have to pass a test, you don’t have to earn the right. You can use the building as a quiet space to be, you can talk through a problem with the Rector, you can come to a service – whoever you are, and whatever you believe. It’s difficult, often, to go somewhere new, especially if we’re not sure of our welcome. We expect to be challenged – why are you here? We wonder if we’re really allowed in, and whether we’ll make mistakes – will we get things right? If you come to a church service, whether it’s for the first time in a long time, or the first time ever, nobody is going to ask why you’re there – they’re just going to be really pleased to see you. If you’re not sure how it all works, just sit next to or behind someone who looks as if they know, and watch what they do. The service book says when to sit or stand, or the person taking the service will – but if you find standing a struggle, stay seated. If you have small children with you, there are usually books and toys to borrow if they need distracting, and often a children’s corner with a carpet where they can play, and sometimes a creche or Sunday Club they can go to while you enjoy the service – and quite a few services that are designed for children to enjoy, too. If you’ve come because of some trouble in your life, don’t feel guilty – we’d a lot sooner you came with a problem than not at all, especially if we can help. If you want to talk about it, you can ask the person taking the service, or just any friendly face; if you don’t, don’t mention it – we don’t know why you’ve come – and if you don’t want to talk at all, you don’t have to. You have every right to be there; the church is for everyone, and God is for everyone – we are all welcome. Yours in Christ,

Carolyn Kennedy

CASEWICK & DOLE WOOD WARDS Dear Residents, Plans are being made to boost the number of homes South Kesteven District Council has available to rent. The introduction of the Right to Buy Scheme that has been available since the 1980s, has resulted in the sale of 115 homes in South Kesteven in the last three years alone. Members of the authority’s Executive have recommended that the Council introduces a buyback scheme so that the Council can return appropriate properties to their stock. Energy saving may not be top of the list of priorities for householders in the summer months but please take a few minutes to look at the Lincolnshire Energy Switch Scheme by visiting www.lincolnshire.gov.uk/switch and see if you could make a saving. If you’re not able to register online, you can do so offline at your local council or by calling 0800 048 8439. It’s open to all energy users, whether you are on dual fuel, electricity only, pay monthly or quarterly or have a prepayment meter. Register by October 11 with the Lincolnshire Energy Switch and see if you can save hundreds of pounds on your future energy bills. If you have any problems or concerns relating to the Casewick Ward please do not hesitate to contact either Rosemary Woolley 01778 560634 (answer machine) email [email protected] or Kelham Cooke 07940 187 426 email [email protected] If you have any concerns relating to the Dole Wood Ward (Braceborough & Wilsthorpe) please contact Barry Dobson, 01778 426649 or email [email protected]

COPTHILL COMMUNITY CHOIR Due to popular demand, the Copthill Community Choir will again be running in the Spring term at Copthill School. For those who have taken part in it before, you will know that adults from all neighbouring villages congregate in the Music room at Copthill school every Thursday morning between 8.15 and 9.30 (or as much of that time as you can make). We will practise a variety of songs to sing as a choir and perform them, together with the Copthill Upper School children, at the end of term. Past members and new members are very welcome and the emphasis is definitely not on musical ability or reading musical notes, but on having fun together as a community project and laughing our way through the sometimes dreary first months of the year….after all singing has proven medical benefits for all ages. There will be CDs available for those of you who have limited time to attend rehearsals or finding music reading an enigma. There will also be music or just word editions of all songs for you to take with the CDs if you wanted to practise at home, in the car or in little groups together (….yes I have seen how Gareth Malone does it!!). My daughter, Lucy-Rose, is writing the production themed on a birds’ flight through magical lands and it will include a variety of songs including “It’s a Long Way to Tipperary”, “I Believe I can Fly”, “Won’t you Play a Simple Melody”, “Thank you for the Music” and Pharrell Williams’ “Happy”. Dates are as follows: Rehearsals will be January 12th, 19th, 26th, February 2nd, 9th,23rd March 2nd,9th,16th with a dress rehearsal on Wednesday 22nd afternoon and the concert on Thursday 23rdMarch. Looking forward to a very musical Spring term in 2017. Best wishes. Judith Graham

Church Services. 11th September at 6.00 pm – Evening Prayer: 25th September at 10.30 am – Holy Communion

Ride and Stride for Churches Saturday 10th September 2016: It is time once again for the annual ‘Ride and Stride’ event which aims to raise funds to help with urgent repairs to churches throughout Lincolnshire. Half the money raised by sponsorship of riders and walkers goes to our local church and the other half goes to the Lincolnshire Churches Trust which awards grants to carry out urgent repairs. It is a relatively easy event to undertake, after all, this area of Lincolnshire is flat(!) so cycling and walking should not be too much of a problem for anyone who is reasonably fit. Sponsorship forms are available from this year’s organizer, David Tilson – details below – and riders/striders can be sponsored for each church visited, or, as many sponsors do, donate a fixed sum for the event. There are many churches and chapels within a 10 mile radius of Tallington (Stamford yields a rich harvest of 8 churches, although Christ Church involves a steep hill). One can also stray across the Lincs/Cambs border to Bainton and Barnack to bag a quick local couple. In the past Tallington has fielded two cyclists and we usually collect about £500+. This year we are currently down to one cyclist so any additional cyclists or walkers will be very welcome. If you are willing to volunteer for this event and give up a Saturday morning for a local charity please contact David Tilson, 01780 74008 (The Stables, Main Road) for a sponsorship form and a list of churches available to visit.

200 Club Winners in June: No 117 Steven and Sarah Martin £20; No 147 Tony Haslam £10.

Social Evening: Our social in September on Friday the 30th will be our annual Harvest Supper. Please try to come, not only to enjoy the Supper (small charge), but also to see the cheque being presented to Bill.

Flying the Flag: Our congratulations and best wishes go to Marcus Jacobs who celebrated his 18th Birthday on 23rd July. The Flag was sponsored by Louise Jacobs and Andy Thurlby.

Please remember that you too can sponsor the flag to be flown to celebrate any occasion at just the cost of £5. Both the Union Jack flag and the flag of St George are available and the choice is yours which one to fly. Just ask John or Liz Allen (740076).

Mobile Library Service: The Mobile Library will be in Church Lane between 11.15 am and 11.45 am on Monday 5th September 2016. Please use this facility if at all possible so that we do not lose it.

Parish Council: The next Parish Council meeting will be held at 7.30 pm in the Village Hall on Tuesday 13th September 2016. All residents are welcome at these meetings.

UFFINGTON PARISH COUNCIL

Minutes of Parish Council Meeting held on Wednesday, 10th August, 2016 at 8pm in the Village Hall. Cllr’s present – Cllr. Brown – Chairman, Cllr. Babbs – Vice Chairman, Cllr. Dodsworth, Cllr. Mulvaney, Cllr. P. Genever & Dist. Cllr. K. Cooke. Apologies - Cllr. K. Genever, Cllr. Sheehan, Dist. Cllr. Woolley & C. Cllr. M. Trollope-Bellew Minutes of meeting held on Thursday, 9th June 2016 was approved and signed Pro: Cllr. Babbs Sec. Cllr. Mulvaney And the Parish Council meeting of 22nd June, 2016 was also approved and signed Pro: Cllr. Dodsworth Sec. Cllr. Babbs. DECLARATIONS OF INTEREST Cllr. P. Genever would declare an interest when the proposal at Newstead was discussed. MATTERS ARISING Play Area – Two quotes have been forwarded to Mr. Navid a third is due at any time and will be forwarded to him when available. Cllr. Mulvaney stated that she had volunteers to help her burn the names into the palings. The Clerk had emptied the bin on the play area and it was noticed that dog pooh bags were being deposited in it. Cllr. Mulvaney volunteered to laminate a “rubbish only” notice and put it on the bin.. The Parish Council had had an e mail from a Mr. Andy Savage of Countryside Access stating that a resident had complained the Bertie Lane/Lindsey Road footpath was becoming overgrown and dangerous. He had inspected the path and could not see a problem but advised the Parish Council to keep an eye on the nettles etc. should they grow close to the path. It was agreed to contact Mr. Harris asking him to strim this area and level it ready for reseeding. Cllr. Brown volunteered to help Mr. Harris clear the rubbish. The Clerk had contacted Ian Ladds of ILA who emailed stating that he had been and inspected the equipment and was satisfied and would forward us a Safety Certificate which would be copied and put on the Notices Board and on the Web Site. Newstead Corner – Highways had replied regarding the weeds on this corner and had forwarded our comments on to their weed spraying contractor. The road edge damage on the Greatford Road had been filled with Type 3 limestone to try to reduce the standing water, apparently this is standard material used for filling. With regard to filling in the “passing places” on Essendine Road we have been informed that “these are not formal passing places” and are just areas where vehicles have chosen to pull on to the verge”. Street Lighting – According to Dist. Cllr. K. Cooke the idea of switching street lights off at certain times have been shelved the money that was to be saved will be found elsewhere. Wheelie Bin Stickers - Some of these stickers have been sold and are evident on bins in the village. There are still some available for the Clerk at 50P each. Village Hall Rubbish Bins – The situation regarding the Council’s charge for emptying the bins is still under discussion. Queen’s 90th Birthday Celebrations – A reply been received from Vanessa Kimberly thanking the Parish Council for their kind comments regarding her and her teams organisation of the 90th Celebrations. PLANNING There were no objections to the following applications S16/1749 – Remove lowest 3m of crown to Scots Pine – North Stables, Casewick, Chris Warburton S16/1433 – Erection of single storey side Ext. 12 Lindsey Road, Kay Barrett. ANY OTHER BUSINESS The Notice Board has been moved from the School Lane Corner to the paddock next to the Post Box. The resident in No. 2 School Lane objected to it being in his garden. David Marvin, Housing Officer SKDC asked the Clerk if it was possible to have it moved. To help Mr. Marvin Cllr. P. Genever suggested it could put in the farm’s paddock this was agreed and it was duly moved. Cllr. P. Genever again complained about the pot holes and their danger to cyclists. Highways to be contacted again. Dist. Cllr. K. Cooke reported that SKDC, as such was not in favour of devolution, no decision has been made and the Council was given another opportunity to discuss it. BARHOLM WITH STOWE

UFFINGTON Church Flowers

11th/18th Sep – Mandy Richardson Uffington WI. A summer walk around Stamford is always a good idea - we could start off in Racoune Row, walk down Mannerly Lane, take a peek at Le Gannoc and the Beast Market, and go on to Wool Row, Ovenesty and Behyndbak. Most of us have never heard of these places but they’re still there – in spirit, at least. Because we’ve been taking a walk around the Stamford of centuries past, in the company of local historian Philippa Massey, who gave a fascinating talk the town’s street names to Uffington WI’s August meeting. Silver Lane, says Philippa, is the only medieval Stamford street name still in use. It leads up to Broad Street, now as then the town’s ‘market street’ but once divided into three separate areas, the Corn Market, Hay Market and Beast Market. Research like this can bring a whole new perspective to what it means to live in Stamford, and Philippa was thanked by Jennifer Wilson. The Vice President, Sue Naden, welcomed members and one guest. Five members had been on The Rutland Belle followed by tea and cake. A very enjoyable outing with no sea sickness and no one overboard. Everyone agreed that the annual July BBQ had been an excellent evening and good imagination had been shown in the costumes. The Committee were thanked for providing the excellent food and Sally was presented with flowers and a bottle in appreciation of the use of her garden. 2016 Annual Meeting Resolutions – Appropriate Care in Hospitals for People with Dementia had been passed by a 79% majority an Avoid Food Waste, Address Food Poverty had an 83% majority. Alison and Sheila gave us all the relevant information. A report on the Annual Meeting in Brighton by our representative Sarah Nottidge from Ryhall WI was read to members. The speaker at the September meeting is Sinead Harrington – Do you like my hats? If members would like to wear a hat to this meeting please do so!

GARDENING & WILDLIFE IN SEPTEMBER Listening to Gardens’ Question Time on Radio 4, I checked out the website, and found an interview with Prince Charles in which he listed ‘seven things you should do in the garden’. See: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/articles/2YpGyCSd5d9d1vCgM6yzBgV/seven-things-prince-charles-says-you-should-do-in-the-garden For interest and information, please find these suggestions below:

1. First of all Prince Charles says ‘enjoy yourself’! He says: “Before you rush into

things, see what you like and don’t like and then get stuck in. For me it’s the

most marvellous, therapeutic business. You can get reward from it, but you can

also be driven mad by it.”

2. Prince Charles described how, when banging in stakes whilst tree planting, he cut

off the end of his finger – and needed a trip to Swindon Hospital to have it sewn

back on! So his second suggestion is ‘take care in the garden’

3. His third tip is ‘stay young’, and “just put yourself in the child’s position and

sometimes it works.” He describes how he loved mazes when young, and

constructed a maze in one of his gardens.

4. We know that Prince Charles is a painter, and his fourth suggestion is ‘paint a

picture’. He says: “I have an absolute passion… for delphiniums – and I’ve always

had it. There’s something about those Edwardian watercolours… To me,

gardening is rather like painting. You need to get the paint on – and not muck

about”.

5. Prince Charles suggests ‘follow a path’. He says: “It’s always rather fun following a

path… It’s always important to have paths that curve – you never quite know

where you’re going”

6. For a wildlife gardening article, it is good to see Prince Charles supporting this

aim, and we know he supports organic gardening and food production, and the

use of peat-free compost. He says: “You want to be able to use nature as your

assistant, but you want to give back in return for what you take.” So ‘work with

nature’.

7. Finally, ‘keep your chin up’. Prince Charles says: “No two years are the same. So,

what was a disaster one year will probably be a success the next year. So don’t

despair. Nature’s quite interesting like that.” Donna Radley & Tim Barfield

STAMFORD HOUSEHOLD ESSENTIALS PROJECT Stamford Foodbank is now in its fourth year of operation and last year fed over 800 people for a minimum period of 3 days each. We have come to recognise that when people are in a time of crisis there is also a need to access essential household equipment. We have also found in conjunction with our largest voucher issuer, Stamford Citizens Advice Bureau, that there is a growing problem with homeless families and individuals taking on empty houses that need to be decorated and furnished. Similar projects exist in neighbouring towns but none of them serve the Stamford area. SHEP has been set up as a separate department of the Stamford foodbank charity to meet this need. The trustees of Evergreen have agreed that their furniture project will now be part of SHEP as will the former store operated by Christians Against Poverty (CAP). In the coming months SHEP will be making presentations to Churches Together and any other interested groups. This is an exciting project and since we started pulling this together in early summer we have fully equipped homes for two families and assisted 5 other individuals with a range of household items. In both of the family situations SHEP’S assistance was crucial to keeping the families together and there is ongoing contact with local churches and the families. Anyone needing support from SHEP should contact myself in the first instance. Assistance will be given on a last resort basis and engaging with the beneficiary as far as possible. SHEP needs volunteers -

1 People who are able to help move around furniture 2 Anyone who has access to a van or other vehicle capable of moving furniture 3 People who can decorate and give an evening or half a day etc. whenever a project comes up.

If anyone is interested please contact me - Lawrence R Davie BTh, Associate Pastor, St George’s Church Office, 15 Maiden Lane, Stamford, PE9 2AZ. Office – 01780 481800 Mobile – 07769 169302 or go to http://www.stgeorgeschurch.net This is an exciting new project and we are open to ideas from the Christian community about how we might develop it and or make it more effective.

SHEP is also seeking donations of used household furniture in good condition, new household items such as bedding, towels, kettles, mircowaves, toasters etc, unused store gift vouchers & cash donations.

WILSTHORPE The next Service at St Faith’s is Holy Communion at 10.30am on Sunday 4th September 2016. Please do come along and join us, where you will be made most welcome. Offertory Box – This was broken into, probably on Thursday morning, 4th August – fortunately there was maybe only 50p in the box but the lock was broken and padlock taken, which a kind villager has offered to repair and replace. Just very sad that it happens but we will continue to keep the church unlocked for visitors to enjoy. The Police were informed. The Steeple Appeal is progressing, more funds are needed for the work which will entail erecting scaffolding, replacing and repairing missing slates, pointing masonary and other remedial works while the scaffolding is in place. It is hoped that the work can be carried out before winter. If anybody would like to make a donation or arrange a fund raising event please don’t hesitate to contact Peter at Wilsthorpe Cottage or Susan at Corner Cottage. Sunday 16th October at 6pm St Faith’s Harvest Festival – more details to follow in the October Towers and Spires. Paperback books for sale! This is proving very popular with villagers and visitors alike. There are lots of books for sale in St Faith’s Church, 50p each or 3 for a £1 – a bargain! The selection is frequently refreshed. Plants - There are a few plants still on offer outside the church for donation only.

COPTHILL SCHOOL

Chess Club - We are looking to appoint an enthusiastic Chess Coach that is willing to visit Copthill twice a week to continue the good work already achieved by our current Coaches at our Chess Clubs. If you think you would enjoy teaching the children your skills, please call Copthill on 01780 757506 and speak to Linda Flynn – we would be delighted to hear from you.
