Sixth Sunday of Easter May 10, 2015

It was not you who chose me, but I who chose you

and appointed you to go and bear fruit.

— John 15:16

My Dear Parishioners,

“No one has greater love than this . . .” As we read Chapter 15 of St. John’s Gospel, he calls our attention to the fundamental truths of all Gospels — Love. It is a repeated invitation of Jesus to all of us to fall in love, to live in love, to know, to taste and to feel the strength of love. Love is the foundation in all of our relationships with God and with one another. Today is Mother’s Day. Today is one of the most beautiful days of the year. Motherhood is a very high calling. What relationship can ever replace the love of a mother? Some mothers are able to be stay-at-home moms while others criticize them for this. All mothers who wish to be true to their high calling need to look to the woman who became the greatest mother of all—Mary, the mother of Jesus. Our Blessed Mother is a true model for motherhood. A humble young lady was born into a poor, humble, environment. She was called to be the mother of our Savior. Obediently, she said “yes” throughout her life to live out her vocation as a mother. St. John Paul II has said, “It can thus be said that women by looking to Mary, find in her the secret of living femininity and of achieving their own true advancement. In the light of Mary, the Church sees in the face of women the reflection of a beauty which mirrors the loftiest sentiments of which the human heart is capable: The self-offering totality of love, the strength that is capable of bearing the gravest sorrows, limitless fidelity and tireless devotion to work, the ability to combine penetrating intuition with words of support and encouragement.” (Redemptorist Mater). One aspect of Mary’s life that has particular meaning and inspiration for many mothers today is the profound suffering that she endured during the passion of her divine son, our Lord Jesus Christ—Mary stood at the foot of the cross. All mothers need to find in Mary the faith, hope, love, and fortitude to stand firm at the foot of the cross. All suffering has power when we unite our suffering with the suffering of Jesus on the Cross. It is very challenging to be a true mother today. It is necessary for many mothers to work outside of the home today, sometimes due to separation, divorce. Being a single mother is extremely difficult. Nothing can take away the love of a mother for her children. I am very grateful to the hard work and dedication of women in all of the parishes I have been privileged to serve in since ordination. I want to wish all mothers here today a Blessed Day! Happy Mother’s Day.

Father Tom

As we enter into May, honoring our Mother Mary in her leadership and amazing faith, the 8th graders are continuing to build their own leadership skills and faith. The 8th graders did a phenomenal job on Monday as they made their way to Glide Memorial Methodist Church to work at their soup kitchen in San Francisco. The 8th graders prepped all the food and then served lunch to the homeless people in the Tenderloin. For many of them, this was the first time working so directly with people in need. They worked extremely hard and even in their exhaustion made sure to smile and greet everyone they met. I was very proud of how they shined Christ’s light to those they met! Wednesday through Friday the 8th graders spent time on retreat working to see God in themselves, others, and nature. They stayed at the Diocese retreat center and were led by some amazing St. Felicitas Alumni who continue to live out their faith in high school. It was a wonderful three days filled with prayer, bonding, faith sharing, and of course fun! Please continue to hold the 8th graders in your prayers as they prepare to leave St. Felicitas behind, knowing they that have a strong faith foundation and that they are more than ready to start their next path in life.

Thông Báo của Cộng Đoàn

Chúa Nhật ngày 17 tháng 5 năm 2015 lúc 3:30pm Cộng Đoàn Nữ Vường Hoà Bình sẽ có rước kiệu Mừng Kính Đức Mẹ Mừng Bổn Mạng Cộng Đoàn.

Nhân ngày Hiền Mẫu, “Happy Mother’s Day” đến tất cả qúy Bà Mẹ, nguyện xin Thiên Chúa là nguồn tình yêu ban muôn ơn lành xuống trên từng người.

Since the children don’t know who you are, they can’t thank you personally; however, I hope that you see this note because I want you to know that your act of kindness touched someone! Thank you for praying for the First Communicants and ~ Thank You for sending cards to these children who just received the Eucharist for the first time! ~ You certainly made them feel special. It is always fun to hear their comments, as they don’t know the person that sent them a card and often times a small religious article gift. It gives the catechists an opportunity to remind them that they belong to another family ~ God’s Christian family, the Church. They are reminded that they became a member of the Christian family on the day they were baptized and by sharing the Eucharist in Holy Communion is strengthens our union with Christ and with the church community.

With gratitude, Sandi Jesus said, “I am the bread of life…Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in him.” John 6:35, 56

Jesus is present with us at Mass. The consecrated bread is the Body of Christ. The consecrated wine is the Blood of Christ. Through our sharing the one bread and the one cup, we are made one with Jesus and one with his Body, the Church (see 1 Corinthians 10:17).
