NUMBER 9 For Dr. Greer, the tipping point came with a number. He was a young resident in a Miami Hospital in 1984 and his patient was a homeless man the police had brought in. The man had advanced tuberculosis and was so far gone he could not speak. No one knew his name: he was identified only by “Number 9” at the end of his bed. Dr. Greer did everything he could to find relatives or friends—anyone who could comfort this man who was past the help of modern medicine. No one was found, and the man died a few days later, essentially alone. Dr Greer is a

gastroenterologist and liver specialist. He could have a top-notch practice on wealthy Ocean Drive, Miami, but Patient Number 9 had left his mark. Dr. Pedro José Greer realized that every patient has a story and a soul: their symptoms are the mask that conceals the dreams, hopes, successes, and failures of a human life. Soon after Patient Number 9 died, Dr. Greer opened Camillus Health Concern in Miami. In a quarter century of service, Camillus has grown to serve ten thousand homeless men, women, and children annually -people who have no other reliable access to health care. Each year at Greer’s Saint John Bosco Clinic, six thousand immigrants - many undocumented - receive medical treatment in a warm and sympathetic setting. For Greer, diagnosis and treatment is the easy part of doctoring. What’s more important is compassion for the patient as a person. The winner of three presidential awards, two papal awards, and the MacArthur Foundation Genius Fellowship, Pedro José Greer has attracted the attention of the rich and powerful, but his mission remains the same. Everyone he helps ensures that Patient Number 9 is never forgotten. Everyone has a name. Everyone is treated with care and compassion.

Stephen Ministry During Lent, Especially, many of us are seeking that closer , more intimate loving relationship with Jesus, God the Father, and the Holy Spirit. The same is true for Stephen Ministers, our care receivers, and hopefully all of you, because we understand how vitally important it is to deepen our wonderful faith with which God has gifted each one of us. We are blessed with so many current hymns which are so moving, and can help us with this, both as songs and poems.

“I hear you call my name, Lord, and I am moved within me. Your Spirit stirs my deepest self. Sing your songs in me. Jesus you are my Lord. Jesus, Jesus, you are the way.” - Hymn “Servant Song”

Another equally helpful hymn is “We Have Been Told.” “We have been told, we’ve seen his face and heard his voice alive in our hearts; Live in my Love with all your heart, as the Father has loved me, so I have loved you.”

The Hymn “There Is Longing” is another helpful song and poem. “There is a longing in our hearts, O Lord, for you to reveal yourself to us. There is a longing in our hearts for love, we only find in You, our God. For healing, for wholeness, for new life: hear our prayers. In sickness, in depth: be near, hear our prayers, O God!!”

Question of the Week - Third Sunday of Lent

Question for Children: Share one way in which you “honor your father and mother.” Question for Youth: Jesus was angry – as we all get at times. When is your anger a good thing? When is it not? Question for Adults: As you hear the Commandments proclaimed today, which one of them really strikes you?
