Greeting Sir Knights,

I am pleased to announce that our installation of officers on Sunday August 5th went very

well. It was very special to hold it after a Sunday morning mass, and I can’t say how

impressive it was to have our fourth-degree executive helping during the mass. We certainly

stand out at mass in uniform and I received several good comments and positive feedback

about the Knights and the good work we do around the parish and community. I want to

thank all the Sir Knights that attended and their families. I also want to thank our Worthy

Master Joe Matthews and Marshall Paul Rozario for coming and making our installation

possible. Special thanks as always goes to our Worthy Friar Father Gerard, he is the backbone

of our assembly and we are very fortunate to have him involved with St. Francis Assembly.

Thank you, Father!

On a different note and as we go through this year, I am expecting to hear more about the

new uniform and changes. As we all agreed we will stay the way we are and deal with things

as they come up and I am ready for that. I do want to mention that I was directed by our

incoming Master that our label pins with the Canadian Flag on them are not allowed with our

uniform. As you know most of us had them on for the installation and we left them on, but I

was told that they are not allowed to be a part of the official uniform. So, going forward I

would like to have our assembly wear the old label pins when in uniform at other honour

guards and we can use the Canadian Flags pins here locally. So not to create a problem for

anyone, all those that are planning on attending Rosary Sunday in Midland please wear your

old label pin. I will bring this up at our next meeting for discussion.

I do ask that you do your best to participate at each honour guard as the requests come in

and a great way to begin is at Rosary Sunday at Martyrs Shrine in Midland on September 9th.

You can read more about this in the poster attached to this newsletter.

I am looking forward to a positive year with the assembly and with this first function turning

out as well as it did, it gives me a good indication of the positive year to come.

Please keep all our Brothers and families listed in this newsletter in your prayers.

Fraternally,

Domenic Sanfilippo, FN, PGK

Faithful Comptroller and Assembly #3495 Topics August 2018 Sentinel Newsletter

Sir Knights, reading our newsletter I hope you are well and enjoying the good weather with

your family. Many of our members or there family members are not well please see our prayers

of the faithful and pray for their return to good health. Sometimes we don’t hear from

members and we wonder as to their health and that of their family so keep in touch you are

important to us.

Well a new Patriotic year has begun and steps are being made so that our Assembly continue to

serve our Priest, Parish and community. Please make every effort to be a part of what we stand

for.

As we are all well aware as 4th degree members we don’t do fund raising very often. However

we the 4th degree should be examples to our members in the 3rd degree to be active and

support their programs and events. Most Councils support the 4th degree due to this type of

support so let us do our part, being a 4th degree member doesn’t absolve you of your

responsibilities to the 3rd degree.

Our Assembly Financially is in good shape and details of this will be reported at our general

meeting as part of our annual audit. Each month our Purser and the Financial Comptroller make

a monthly report of the financial status of your Assembly. I must say we do have some 4th

degree hats blue, white and grey also pins with the Canadian Flag for sale.

Our officers will be installed into their office on Sunday August 5th after the 11 am mass, by the

time you read this it will be completed. Each year there are changes that are made at Supreme

and State Conventions so this usually means changes are you current and update with what are

order is and or changing to. You can visit the Supreme and State web sites to stay in the know

or attend meetings where most items of change are discussed. Another good way to keep you

updated is read your Assembly St Francis Sentinel Newsletter.

Well Sir Knights this report is the views of the writer a report or a thought that you would like

put in our newsletter Sir Knight Frank I am sure would more than welcome it to our outgoing

news. On a final comment I would like to thank all the members of our Assembly that took an

active role in this last Patriotic year. I would like to offer a special Thank You to our Past Faithful

Navigator Don McDonald even with serious health issues he completed a great year.

Respectfully

Michael FC

A Seed Has to Die

How St. Jean de Brébeuf became a living sacrifice of love.

“Therefore, my beloved Jesus, from this day on, with the feeling of joy I am now experiencing, I offer you my body, my blood, and my life…”-St. Jean de Brébeuf (Jean de Brébeuf, Latourelle, Rene, SJ, Editions Fides, 1999, pg 176.)

Ad majorem Dei gloriam.

An Ongoing Sacrifice

At Martyrs’ Shrine, there are many statues and replications of St. Jean de Brébeuf. Rightly so, both from a historical, as well as a spiritual perspective.

He was called “the Arkon” by the First Nations peoples of Huronia, meaning “the Ox” in the Wendat language. Truly, he was unusually tall and strong for his time. As a “Norman,” Fr. Latourelle tells us, he was the descendant and “fusion” of the Celts, Romans, Franks and Vikings. Jean de Brébeuf was not a killer, but he was a warrior of a different kind.

When we meditate upon the cross of Christ, we can see that Jesus also, like the Canadian Martyrs who loved Him, came to die. He was the seed of which He spoke, a seed that bears life even today when pilgrims journey to the Shrine with all of their ailments and problems and sufferings, to lay them down. They lay them down, they plant the seed of their own sufferings in the ground here, soaked with the blood of the Martyrs, and miracles are the fruit by God’s grace.

St. Jean de Brébeuf and his companions, now revered as the Canadian Martyrs, did not simply make one large and final sacrifice at the end of their lives, and live mediocre or profligate lives until that point. In choosing to follow Jesus, then as well as now, Christians make a choice that is anti-world, anti-flesh, and anti-diabolical. It is a choice all of us must make- will we follow Him, when it means we will most certainly die? “Behold,” He says to you today, “I stand at the door and knock.” (Rev. 3:12) Will you give your life to Him completely?

If you do, God promises that you will RISE. (Jn. 11:25; 1 Thess. 4:16-17)

St. Jean de Brébeuf and your companions, pray for us.

Daniel Devine, M. Div Martyrs’ Shrine (Programmes Department) Faith Animator

History of the KofC in Ontario The Knights of Columbus in Ontario can trace their roots back to January 28, 1900, when a class of fifty nine candidates were initiated in Ottawa Ontario, and formed Council 485. While at that time a United States based organization, the growth in Ontario over the next ten years occurred primarily in towns where the railway passed through, with commercial salesmen or transient printers bringing the news of the Order to these towns. In 1903, Kingston, Cornwall and Peterborough added Councils, and in 1904 a State Council was formed in Ontario with M. J. Gorman of Ottawa being elected as the first State Deputy of our Province. By 1910, there were twenty-four Councils and over 3,500 members of the Order in Ontario. The next decade saw continued growth of membership in the Knights, both in Councils and membership, and especially after the war ended in 1918. However, in what was a sign of things to come, there was a laxity of Councils filling in reports and answering letters, and also member’s dues began to fall behind, with some members paying on a credit instead of cash basis. While this growth in members continued into the early twenties, the advent of outside attractions such as motion pictures, radio, sporting enterprises and service clubs brought challenges to the work of the Knights of Columbus in Ontario. Newer members joined but were not getting involved at the Council officer level, and by 1924 the membership growth started to turn toward losses.

Programs, however, continued to grow, and many Council’s started to have Corporate Communions and breakfasts. With the onset of the depression in the 1930’s, membership began to decline even further, and by 1937 it had reached the level attained by 1918, although there were 57 Councils in existence by 1940. The Text Book and Scholarship Funds, both started in the 1920’s, were continued during the depression, but the Scholarship Fund eventually was discontinued due to lack of interest from students. The State Convention was reduced to a one day meeting (and remained this way until 1964,) but Regional meetings were set up in various locations throughout the year as a way to substitute for the reduced Convention time. Ontario was proud to host the Supreme Convention in 1936, and again in 1944 (and later in 1972 and 2001,) all in Toronto.

The ending of World War II saw the beginning of an increase in membership, and by the end of the decade the membership was projected to reach the total that had been achieved in 1923. The end of the war also saw the first edition of the State Bulletin, edited by William Sheady of Guelph, who was the Executive Secretary and Publicity Director for the Board. In 1950, State Deputy Frank Hyde developed a competition for Councils in Ontario which started the tradition of naming the best Council in Ontario at the annual Convention. In 1962, the trophy was replaced by the lectern which is passed to the winning Council each year.

The 1950’s saw a change in the way elections to the State Council were managed. Up until 1955, no State Officer who had served in the position of Warden had advanced to become State Deputy; James Gaffney of Hamilton became the first. Since that time, the progression system that is in place today, where a State Officer is elected to the position of State Warden for a two year term, and then elected every second year to the next highest position, until they become State Deputy. In 1963, the first history of the Order in Ontario was published by William Sheady, and this was updated in 1975 by PSD Vincent Kelly.
