May 27th, 2018 Two months ago, “CBS Sunday Morning” featured a story about the savants among us. Who are they? People of profound or extensive learning. The ones showcased on this parcular show had great skills but accompanied by one or another disability. I remember in parcular one gentleman who could neither speak nor write, but could carve from a lump of clay an exquisite model of a horse with nothing but his fingers in fieen minutes. Viewers got to see his extensive collecon of other animal figures, each replete with detail. Another person interviewed could tell you the day of the week events in history took place as well as future events yet to happen. These gis that made them skilled beyond the average Joe or Judy were something to see. But even the brightest of these savants would never assert the math-emacs of three being one. That’s illogical and impossible, right? Naturally true. Except. Except that Jesus our very Lord told us explicitly that God is a Trinity of Persons but one God. These Persons are disnct but equal. When we hear what is called by scholars “the Great Commission” at the closing of St. Mahew’s gospel, we have an example of this. We note the singular “name” used of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit” in the bapsmal formula. In other places, Jesus told His followers that He and the Father are one. At another me, He said that the Father will send another Advocate “who will teach you all things.” Bad grammar? Hardly. Full disclosure? Certainly. Have you ever wondered why Jesus told us this about God? Why did He reveal the true inner nature of the God-head to us who will never understand it anyway? It was certainly not to dazzle us. That was not Jesus’ way. Nor was it to taunt us with some kind of mind game. Jesus did this out of the love He has for all of us. I be-lieve people in love would understand this best of all. A lover wants to know as much as he/she can about the be-loved. The beloved in turn shares as much as he/she can. Over a lifeme of married love, slowly but surely few secrets remain. Infinitely superior to us, God wanted us to know who He really is. To realize that He is a loving community of Three. God was not lonely when He created us. It’s that His love just overflowed the way goodness does, into the creaon of a beauful world peopled by the unique persons we are, each created in His image and likeness. So this Trinity Sunday is really then a feast of love, and not of mys-terious math. No maer that we can’t picture it. Speaking of pictures, I recall Art Linkleer, the pioneer of TV shows featuring kids being kids, who once saw a small boy drawing a picture. He asked the boy “What are you drawing?” The boy replied, “A picture of God.” Linkleer then told the lad that no one knows what God looks like, to which the lile guy confidently responded, “They will when I get through!” “ Reflection by, Rev. Leonard N. Peterson”
