SAINT PIUS X (1835-1914) August 21

Presidential vetoes we understand. But imagine vetoing a papal election! Yet in the conclave of 1903, the Archbishop of Cracow (ironically, a predecessor in that office of Karol Wojtyla, the future John Paul II) vetoed the leading candidate on the order of the Austro-Hungarian emperor. Instead, the cardinals elected Giuseppe Sarto of Venice as Pius X, the first pope, after a succession of nobles and diplomats, to hail from humble origins. Nor did the papacy alter his endearing simplicity. Tailors eventually made his cassock cuffs detachable because he absentmindedly wiped his fountain pen on them, forgetting that his old black cassock had been replaced by papal white! Taking as his motto “To restore all things in Christ” (Ephesians 1:10), Pius condemned the theological innovations called “modernism,” yet dramatically altered the then-common practice whereby people rarely received Communion for fear of unworthiness, mandating early First Communion and urging everyone to frequent reception. Refusing to bless troops assembled in Saint Peter’s Square—“I bless peace, not war!”—he died brokenhearted as World War I engulfed Christian Europe despite his peacemaking efforts. —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. SAINTS AND SPECIAL OBSERVANCES

Sunday: Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time Wednesday: St. John Eudes Thursday: St. Bernard Friday: St. Pius X Saturday: Queenship of the Blessed Virgin Mary

WHY PRAY? The “foreigners” as Isaiah calls them, the “Gentiles” as Paul calls them, or the “Canaanites” as Matthew calls them are called to worship the one true God in prayer. As we listen to today’s readings, perhaps we are tempted to ask: Why pray? The question is rhetorical; it is tantamount to asking why should friends talk to one another or people in love kiss one another. Prayer is a way of relating to God, a way of talking to God. The apostles had the opportunity to talk to Jesus in the flesh. We have the opportunity to talk to Jesus Christ in prayer. Our relationship with him must be enthusiastic; it cannot be faint-hearted. John Donne, a fifteenth-century poet, knew what the qualities of good prayer were. Donne asks God to treat him differently from most Christians. The poet does not want God to merely “knock, breathe, shine, and seek to mend,” but also to “break, blow, burn, and make me new” (Holy Sonnets, XIV).

It takes a dynamic faith on our part to come to God in prayer. As Jesus once said, “Knock and the door will be opened to you” (Matthew 7:7). It may take pounding the door down, but if we are as persistent as the woman in today’s Gospel, the results will follow. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Some of the Precious Souls on their journey to Sainthood

Servant of God ~Venerable ~ Blessed ~ Saint

Sr. Henrietta Delille (1812-1862) - Venerable Henriette Delille is the first United States native born African American whose cause for canonization has been officially opened by the Catholic Church. She was born a free woman of color and lived her life in New Orleans, Louisiana. In 1836 Henriette drew up the rules and regulations for devout Christian women, which would eventually become the Society of the Holy Family. The group was founded for the purpose of nursing the sick, caring for the poor, and instructing the ignorant. Venerable Henriette Delille lived her prayer: "I believe in God. I hope in God. I love. I want to live and die for God." Her obituary ends with this quote: “For the love of Jesus Christ, she made herself the humble servant of slaves” https://www.henriettedelille.com/

Sr. Thea Bowman (1937-1990) - She was born in 1937 and reared in Canton, Mississippi. As a child she converted to Catholicism through the inspiration of the Franciscan Sisters of Perpetual Adoration and the Missionary Servants of the Most Holy Trinity who were her teachers and pastors at Holy Child Jesus Church and School in Canton. These religious communities nurtured her faith and greatly influenced her religious vocation. Sister Thea Bowman’s life was always one of Gospel joy, enduring faith, and persevering prayer even in the midst of racial prejudice, cultural insensitivity, and debilitating illness. Her personal holiness witnessed to the faith and endurance of her ancestors, the hope expressed in the Spirituals, compassion for the poor and marginalized, her devotion to the Eucharist, and the radical love embodied by St. Francis of Assisi. In 2018, the Diocese of Jackson, MS opened the cause into the investigation of her life as a Servant of God. https://www.sistertheabowman.com/

Captain Leonard LaRue (1914-2001) also known as Brother Marinus From Captain to Monk-Captain Leonard LaRue never wanted to be called a hero, though he saved 14,000 lives by one incredible act during the Korean War. By the morning of December 23, 1950 after only 13 hours, the Meredith Victory had packed 14,000 refugees on board and, still carrying jet fuel, steered into waters infested with enemy submarines. The ship had no escort or any way to defend itself against potential attacks. Without any supplies, or accommodations for that many and 3 days at sea in freezing temperatures, not 1 person perished and they arrived at a small island named Geoje with 3 additional passengers. 3 babies were born during the rescue. In 1954, LaRue left the sea to join the Benedictine congregation of St. Ottilien at St. Paul’s Abbey in Newton, New Jersey. He made his first profession on Christmas Day, 1956, and took his final vows at the Christmas midnight Mass three years later. The name he chose, Mari-nus, was both a tribute to the Blessed Virgin Mary and an appropriate appellation for a man of

the sea. His response when asked about trying to rescue the refugees, “He just reached over and he touched the holy Bible and said, ‘The answer is here—no greater love hath a man than to lay down his life for his friends.’” He is a true servant of God. Our very own, Fr. Sinclair Oubre is instrumental in moving his cause through to sainthood. https://aosusa.americommerce.com/store/pg/51-Cause-for-Brother-Marinus/Capt-LaRue-clone1.aspx

Dorothy Day (1897-1980) Dorothy was baptized as an Episcopalian. In 1916, she left the university and moved to New York City where she worked as a journalist on socialist newspapers, participated in protest movements, and developed friendships with many famous artists and writers. Dorothy had grown to admire the Catholic Church as the “Church of the poor” and her faith began to take form with the birth of her daughter Tamar in 1926. Her decision to have her daughter baptized and embrace the Catholic faith led to the end of her common law marriage and the loss of many of her radical friends. While covering the 1932 Hunger March in Washington, D.C. for some Catholic magazines, she prayed at the national Shrine of the Immaculate Conception that some way would open up for her to serve the poor and the unemployed. The following day, back in New York, she met Peter Maurin, a French immigrant and former Christian Brother, who had a vision for a society constructed of Gospel values. Together they founded the Catholic Worker newspaper which spawned a movement of

houses of hospitality and farming communes that has been replicated throughout the United States and other countries. Dorothy Day lived a life faithful to the injunctions of the Gospel. Cardinal John O’Connor of New York initiated the cause of her Sainthood in 2000. The Vatican approves the cause and granted the title “Servant of God.” In November 2012, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops readily endorsed her cause. http://dorothydayguild.org/
