From Father’s Desk…….

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, For the second Sunday in a row, we take a break from Ordinary Time. Today we celebrate the Feast of the Dedication of the Lateran Basilica which, admittedly, is relatively obscure. Most of the feasts we celebrate honor a particular saint or com-memorate an event in the life of Jesus or Mary. Today’s feast commemorates an event that – in retrospect – has historical sig-nificance in the life of the Church. In first centuries of Christiani-ty, believers were often persecuted throughout the Roman Em-pire. That changed when Emperor Constantine came to power and legalized Christianity in A.D. 313 with the Edict of Milan. The church built shortly thereafter – in the style of a Roman basil-ica and on the land of the Laterani family – was the first im-portant church building constructed in the capital of the empire. It became the cathedral church of Rome – the seat of the Bishop of Rome. (Popes didn’t move to the Vatican until the fourteenth century.) So in celebrating the dedication of the Lateran Basilica, the Church honors her history in the City of Rome and honors the papacy. In addition, whenever we celebrate the dedication of another church, we celebrate the dedication of our own church – our own sacred space where heaven and earth unite for us. So, happy feast day – one about 1700 years in the making. History played an important part of the Magnificat Day gathering on November 1st. We listened to wonderful music from the Church’s cultural heritage, viewed reproductions of great works of religious art, and celebrated the Church’s liturgy as gen-erations have done since Christ first gathered with his Apostles. In his talk, Father Robert Barron noted that the three touchstones that lead people toward God have always been truth, goodness, and beauty. Unfortunately, in our society, truth and goodness have become relative. Yet beauty remains a valuable tool of evangelization because beauty speaks to the soul and can open minds and hearts. I was celebrating the 5:00pm Mass here as the day drew to a close, so I was only able to watch the Eucharistic procession from the television broadcast that I had recorded. For a native Memphian, it was a moving sight to watch hundreds of Catholics (and perhaps a few friends from other faith traditions) follow the Blessed Sacrament along the same Main Street where I watched Cotton Carnival parades as a child, where civil rights marches took place in the 1960s, where I had walked in the earliest days of my legal career.
