ST. FRANCIS OF ASSISI CATHOLIC CHURCH

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, Though I will have returned by the time you read this, I am actually writing this from Owensboro, Kentucky. I travelled to Owensboro on Monday morning with Bishop Holley and Msgr. Victor Ciaramitaro to attend the annual meeting of the presbyteral councils of the Province of Louisville. Each year, the bishops from Kentucky and Tennessee gather with the priests who serve on their diocesan presbyteral councils to discuss the issues that each diocese is confronting or the new and creative approaches they are taking. This is an unusu-al year for us in that the Diocese of Memphis does not have a pres-byteral council at present. By canon law, a presbyteral council ceases to exist when a bishop’s resignation is accepted. A new bishop is given a year from the time of his ordination or installation to establish a new council. Bishop Holley is getting to know the needs of our diocese and the gifts and talents of our priests before he reconstitutes this body. So Msgr. Ciaramitaro and I are here representing the priests of the diocese in an unofficial capacity. It is always good to hear what is going on in the other dioceses and to see friends who are the priests of the neighboring dioceses.

Our trip does give me a little chance to get away and reflect upon the meaning of this Advent season. Our liturgy during Advent is focused upon the Prophet Isaiah, St. John the Baptist, and the Blessed Virgin Mary. We are reading from Isaiah at our Sunday Masses, and this weekend and next the gospels feature John the Baptist. Our attention is drawn to Our Lady throughout this week by the Church’s calendar. On Thursday, we observe the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, when we recognize that the preparation for the Incarnation began long before the Annun-ciation. Our Lady was preserved from original sin from the first moment of her existence, and we honor Mary as the Immaculate Conception as the patroness of the United States. Also in Decem-ber, the Church honors Mary as Our Lady of Guadalupe. This is an important feast throughout the American hemisphere and particu-larly among our Latino brothers and sisters. Our parish celebration will take place on Friday, December 9th, the Feast of St. Juan Diego, and all of you are welcome to come, pray, and enjoy the festivities of this feast. While Catholic Christianity is quite diverse, the Eucharist and the Blessed Virgin Mary are often our points of unity. No matter the image or the title, Our Lady’s example of faith and love is a touchstone for all Catholics. Please take the time this week to reflect upon the witness of our Blessed Mother.

Finally, last Friday evening, we had the opportunity to gather with the catechists who volunteer as teachers and assis-tants in our Parish Religious Education program. We are grateful to these catechists for their efforts to pass along their faith to the next generation and it is always great to be able to say “Thank you.” I pray that your Advent continues to be a blessed time of prayer and preparation. Pax et bonum,

From Father’s Desk Noteworthy……

1st Quarter 2017 Ministry Schedule

Attention all Lectors, Ushers and Extraordinary Min-isters of Holy Communion. Believe it or not, it is time to prepare the first ministry schedule of the new year! So if you know of any specific dates and times that you will not be able to serve during the

first quarter of 2017 (January 7th through March 26th), please let the church office know as soon as possible so that we do not schedule you on those dates. Doing so will eliminate having to find a replacement. We would also like to be able to email the completed schedule to you, so please ensure that we have your correct email address as well as your preferred Mass times on file. Please note that this request was emailed to all liturgical ministers earlier this week, so if you did not receive an email, then we do not have your correct email address on file. Please send any contact updates, changes to your preferred Mass times, and “do not schedule me dates” by December 15th to: [email protected]. Any questions? Please call the church office at (901) 756-1213. Thank you for your time and service to St. Francis Church!

If you would like to learn more about the Knights or would like to be part of our organization, please contact Tom Viotti at 865-789-2427 or Danny Doyle at 901-382-3783.
