    DID YOU KNOW?

If you have difficulty getting up to receive Holy Communion, the front row on both sides of the back section are reserved so that the Eucharistic Ministers can come directly to you. Please feel free to use these seats - your family is welcome to sit with you. The pews are marked “Reserved.”

We are very grateful to those in the military who have dedicated themselves to protect our liberty and freedom. Please keep our troops in your prayers, especially Bill Knips, Paul Golando, Nicholas D’Urso, Connor McKiernan, Patrick Sullivan, and William Benagh.

If you have an intention for Mass, consider presenting the gifts of bread and wine during that celebration. Please arrive early and inform the ushers before Mass.

It is through Baptism that we are joined with Christ, share in His passion, death and resurrection and so are saved from our sins and become adopted children of God, sharing in divine life. This miracle of God’s love and grace will be bestowed upon Gavin Robert Suarez , child of Gregory & Caitlin (Weir) Suarez. Please pray for this child and his parents, that they may be faithful to God’s call to salvation.

If you are Gluten-sensitive and wish to receive the Holy Eucharist, we have low gluten hosts. Please see the priest before mass and he will place the host in a pyx (host container) and give it to you during the reception of Holy Communion.

Our patron, St. Francis of Assisi, ministered to the poor and the deprived people of his time. In the “spirit” of St. Francis, we too have a great legacy of ministering to the poor of Rockland County. All parishioners are invited to donate one non-perishable food item which will go Catholic Community Services of Rockland. Please check the expiration date on the items being donated.

Donations will be accepted the weekend of January 16-17.

May the splendor of your majesty,

    O Lord, we pray,

shed its light upon our hearts,

that we may pass through the shadows of this world

and reach the brightness of our eternal home.

Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,

who lives and reigns with you

one God, for ever and ever.

January 3, 2021 Month of the Holy Name of Jesus

    Dear friends in the Lord:

Each January within the archdiocese, we are asked to collect a special offering to show our support to The Catholic University of America and the Catholic Communications Campaign.

We all know The Catholic University as a truly unique institution of higher learning. It is the only one founded by the United States bishops back in 1887, and chartered by the Vatican. In every way, the university belongs to each of us no matter where we live. And so, it is incumbent upon us to help with the education of future leaders of our Church and nation. Your contributions help to underwrite the university's financial aid office so that students, young and old from across the country will have access to quality academic and spiritual programs. Just within the past year, several thousand students, including those from our archdiocese, who otherwise would not have been able to attend CUA, were given an opportunity to do so, thanks in large part to your generosity.

Also, through the Catholic Communications Campaign, the conference of bishops is able to serve all the dioceses of our nation by providing educational and spiritual programs for radio and television. You should know that one half of your giving remains here in the archdiocese to assist with the ongoing and planned efforts of our communications and technology office.

This combined collection will be taken in our parishes next Sunday, January 10, the solemnity of the Baptism of the Lord.

My gratitude for your generous contribution to these two important collections, and my prayerful best wishes for a holy, healthy and happy new year.

    Faithfully in Christ,

Timothy Michael Cardinal Dolan Archbishop of New York

Significance of the Epiphany Visit On this Feast of the Epiphany, I present the symbolism of the worship of the Magi told in the Gospel of Matthew and developed in the history and theology of the Church. On this day we remember the scripture story of the three Magi (Kings or Wise Men) who traveled from the East to give homage to the Christ child. I focus on this partly because of the astrological event of Saturn and Jupiter aligning this year and being called the Christmas star. I partly focus on this because of the layers of hidden meaning found in this event. It was the bright star that guided the three Magi to Jesus in Bethlehem. But who are these men from the east? The names of the three Magi have traditionally been Caspar, Melchior and Balthazar. Caspar brought the gold, Melchior the frankincense and Balthazar the myrrh. In Catholic tradition Caspar, who is depicted as an older man, is thought to have come from Tarsus in modern day Turkey. Melchior, who is depicted as a middle-aged man, is thought to have come from Arabia. Balthazar, depicted as a younger man, is thought to have come from Saba in modern day Yemen. The important symbolism of these Magi coming to baby Jesus is that, right at the start of His life on earth, the Lord reveals that he has come to save not just his own people of the Jewish faith but peoples of all religions, races and ages on the earth. No matter where you are from or what age you are, the Lord has come to redeem you and save you. The three gifts themselves have hidden meanings as well. Gold, a precious metal, symbolizes kingship on earth. Frankincense, a type of incense, symbolizes deity. Myrrh, an embalming oil, symbolizes death. The earliest known writer of this symbolic connection is Origen in the year 248 A.D. when he wrote in his letter Contra Celsum, “gold, as to a king; myrrh, as to one who was mortal; and incense, as to a God.” Thus, right from the beginning of His earthly life, the Lord reveals to us that He is King of heaven and earth, He is God with us (Emmanuel) and He is fully human since he will die for us to save us. Celebrate this great Feast with joy as you reflect on the deeper meaning of this occasion!

    ~Fr. Robert F. McKeon

Everyone goes through crises sometimes. When that is happening, we can benefit from a conversation with an experienced professional counselor who shares our Catholic perspective. Our parish can make a connection for you through the archdiocese's PARISH COUNSELING NETWORK. Parishioners of St. Francis can make an appointment to meet with a professional counselor in Rockland County or anyplace in the archdiocese for up to six meetings, with only a $10 co-pay per session. Tell Father that you would like to talk with a counselor. He will contact the appointment desk on your behalf and then you can call and arrange your first visit. If interested, please contact the Rectory (845)634-4957.
