OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST KING OF THE UNIVERSE

Jesus, besides being a shepherd, is also King, and He offers us a Kingdom where everyone can congregate without exception. This feast was established by Pope Pius XI in 1925, and later on in 1970 was transferred to the final Sunday in Ordinary Time –the original title is Domini nostril Jesu Christi Regis. The theme of Christ the King is one of the most meaningful traditions among believers. He will come and we must answer to Him: Did we help the poor? Did we feed the hungry? How did we treat those with a handicap? This is the kind of King that we have, and that is the reason why Christ has been the only King who reigns from a cross, and not from a throne made of marble and gold. Monarchy was very much criticized in the Old Testament, but Jesus reigns from a non-power stance, and identifies himself not with the monarchy, but with the poor and with those who are ignored, with those who suffer, with children, with the humble. He criticized the present power structure of those times, something that has not changed; the underdog continues to be oppressed and ignored, and without a voice. On the upper part of the crucifix we see a sign that reads: INRI: This is the King of the Jews. While the soldiers were making fun of him, Jesus tells Pilate that his Kingdom is not of this world. So, in other words, Jesus reigns but with the strength of his Word and as a sacrificed Lamb. We never see the Lord ruling from a political, monarchic or domination standpoint. He is King only because he inaugurates the Reign of God. He is King because He heals the sick, because He resurrects the dead, and because He came to bring us life in abundance. This is the King par excellence, the King who never ever dies. There were a lot of bad shepherds in those days. The prophet Ezekiel talks about them, that is, kings who oppress others. Jesus, on the contrary, is worth much more than that because he is above thrones, domina-tions, principalities and powers. He is the head, and we are His Body, we are the Church. We are very fortu-nate in the sense that no matter how many bad governments we go through or wars or afflictions, Jesus will always be our hope, a King that is reachable, available, and who invites us to live with him forever in his Kingdom.

Jesús, además de ser pastor, también es Rey, y nos ofrece un Reino donde se congregan todos sin excepcio-nes. Esta fiesta fue establecida por el Papa Pío XI en 1925; más tarde en 1970 se transfirió al último domingo del Tiempo Ordinario. El tema de Cristo Rey es una de las tradiciones que más significado tiene entre los cre-yentes. Él vendrá y somos nosotros los que tenemos que rendirle cuentas: ¿Ayudamos a los más pobres…Dimos de comer al hambriento…tratamos bien a aquellos que no tienen nada, a los desvalidos…a los minus-válidos? Esta es la clase de Rey que tenemos. Por eso es que Cristo ha sido el único Rey que reina desde la cruz y no desde un trono de mármol y oro. En el Antiguo Testamento se criticaba mucho la monarquía, pero Jesús reina radicalmente del no-poder y se identifica, no con la monarquía, sino con los pobres y con las personas a las cuales nadie les hace caso, con los que sufren, con los niños. Él criticó la estructura del poder existente en aquel tiempo –algo que no ha cam-biado- porque siempre existen poderos que oprimen n a los de abajo, a los que no tienen voz. En el crucifijo vemos que en la parte superior hay un letrero que dice: Este es el rey de los judíos: INRI. Los soldados se burlaban de Él mientras Jesús le decía a Pilato que su reino no es de este mundo. Jesús, por lo tanto, reina con la fuerza de su Palabra, como el Cordero degollado. Nunca aparece ejerciendo el poder políti-co, monárquico o de dominación. Jesús es Rey única y exclusivamente porque inaugura y predica el Reino de Dios. Jesús es Rey porque sana a los enfermos, porque da vida a los muertos, porque ha venido a traer vida y vida en abundancia. Este Rey, Jesús es el Rey que nunca muere. Existían muy malos pastores y el profeta Ezequiel habla en contra de los malos pastores, o séase, reyes, porque oprimían a los demás. Jesús, por el contrario, vale muchísimo más porque está por encima de los tro-nos, denominaciones, principados y potestades. Él es la cabeza y nosotros, su cuerpo--somos la Iglesia. So-mos dichosos porque, no importa por cuantos gobiernos pasemos, no importa las guerras, no importa las aflic-ciones, Jesús es nuestra esperanza y es Él quien nos invita a vivir con Él en su Reino. Además, tenemos un Rey alcanzable, con quien podemos hablar, que nos perdona y que nos demuestra amor y misericordia. Nos podemos identificar con todo lo bueno, porque es Cristo quien conduce a la vida y no a la muerte.
