Cherishing our Franciscan Tradition

Today Pope Francis urges us to pray for conversion in order to be people of forgiveness. Conversion is a grace we should ask for; we should spend much time in such prayer of petition. Our heart becomes enclosed in its sin; it becomes hardened. Even before the God who never tires of forgiving, our impatient heart gradually yields to human ways and grows weary of asking for pardon. We need the word of Jesus to wake us up: “How foolish you are and how slow of heart to believe to believe all that the proph-ets have declared! Was it not necessary that the Messiah should suffer these things and then enter into his glory?” (Luke 24:25-26). These words of the Risen Lord will help us understand the great good that can come from recognition of our sins and from sincere conversion of heart. We must ask God for this conversion since it is part of the grace of our vocation, a grace to which we must always remain open.

This weekend I shall be in Lourdes where I will remember all your intentions. Please continue to pray for me. Pray also for the gift of peace as we remember the terrible events of 9/11.

Peace and all good in the Tradition of St. Francis and St. Clare,

Fr. Des

From the Pastor’s Desk

New Mass Setting – Music at St. Francis, Part 2Gloria: Through-Composed vs. With Refrain One key aspect of Curtis Stephan’s “Mass of Renewal” setting is the musical structure of the Gloria. Generally the Gloria may be presented in two forms, through-composed or with additional refrains. Stephan’s “Gloria” is through-composed, which means that the composition does not contain repeated sections or verses, and the Gloria text remains in its original and truest form. A great example of through-composed music we sing at St. Francis is the Easter hymn, “In the Breaking of the Bread,” which tells the story

of Jesus’s disciples encountering Jesus while walking on the road to Emmaus.

Many of the mass settings we have recently sung at St. Francis have the Gloria with a sung refrain. Stephan’s setting does not use a refrain. The primary function of composers utilizing a sung refrain is to encourage congre-gational participation. Both through-composed and addi-

tional refrain settings of the Gloria are acceptable for liturgical purposes as prescribed by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops.

Music is sung prayer. It elevates and transcends our soul in many ways unimaginable. At St. Francis, we embrace the ideals of Second Vatican Council, which encourage us to be full, conscious, and active participants in liturgical celebra-tions. Let’s continue to fill this space with our music, our voice, and our sound. St. Francis truly is a special place.

Peace and all good,Tim Mascarinas, Director of Music

Prayer Requests

Peace Prayer Of ST. FRANCISLord, make me an instrument of your peace;where there is hatred, let me sow love;where there is injury, pardon;where there is doubt, faith;where there is despair, hope;where there is darkness, light;and where there is sadness, joy. O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled, as to console;to be understood, as to understand;to be loved, as to love;for it is in giving that we receive,it is in pardoning that we are pardoned, and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. Amen. While this prayer has always been attributed to St. Francis,

the author is actually unknown. The prayer does wonderfully represent the spirit of St. Francis and Franciscan Orders.

A Christian prayer in union with creation Father, we praise you with all your creatures. They came forth from your all-powerful hand; they are yours, filled with your presence and your tender love.

Praise be to you! Son of God, Jesus, through you all things were made. You were formed in the womb of Mary our Mother, you became part of this earth, and you gazed upon this world with human eyes. Today you are alive in every creature in your risen glory. Praise be to you! Holy Spirit, by your light you guide this world. You also dwell in our hearts and you inspire us to do what is good. Praise be to you! Triune Lord, wondrous community of infinite love, teach us to contemplate you in the beauty of the universe, for all things speak of you.

Awaken our praise and thankfulness for every being that you have made. Give us the grace to feel profoundly joined to everything that is. The poor and the earth are crying out. O Lord, seize us with your power and light, help us to protect all life, to prepare for a better future, for the coming of your Kingdom of justice, peace, love and beauty. Praise be to you! Amen. - Pope Francis (Laudato Si’)

Season of Creation

The Season of Creation, running yearly between September 1 and October 4, is that time of

the year when 2.2 billion Christians are invited to pray and care for creation.

September 1 was proclaimed as a day of prayer for creation (World Day of Prayer for Creation, or Creation Day) by Ecumenical Patriarch Dimitrios I for the Orthodox in 1989, and was embraced by the other major Christian European churches in 2001 and by Pope Francis for the Roman Catholic Church in 2015.

And it has happened that in recent years many Christian churches have started celebrating the “Season of Creation” (also known as Creation Time) between that date and October 4, which is the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi (author of the Canticle of the Creatures in the 13th century) that some Western traditions observe.

Care of our Priests There will be a second collection—the Diocesan Collection for Priests Retirement—at all Masses this weekend. This is our opportunity to take care of those who have spent their lives caring for our spiritual and sacramental needs within our Diocese. If you are not prepared this weekend, there are envelopes in the vestibule for you to take home. Simply return the envelope in theoffering next week. Thank you for your sup-port of our parish priests.

Season of CreationThe priest is not a priest for himself, he is a priest for you.

Honoring our Franciscan tradition, St. Francis Parish is a Catholic Christian Community

building the reign of God in the spirit and path of St. Francis and St. Clare of Assisi.

We value vibrant liturgy and personal prayer as a way to worship God and celebrate life.

Challenged by the Holy Spirit, we reach beyond ourselves to care for our

neighbors, the poor, the marginalized, and those alienated by our Catholic Church.

We respond to the command of Jesus to love by welcoming all, evangelizing,

supporting spiritual growth, and being Eucharist to each other.

We aspire to be witnesses and prophets advocating for justice in the world and in the Church.

We are an inclusive community respecting the dignity of all persons

and supporting the journey of each person.

Continuing from last Sunday, let’s now see the final five descriptions found in the

Decalogue for a Spirituality of Franciscan Nonviolence, Pt2 Transformative nonviolence calls us to:

6. Understand and accept that the New Creation, the building up of the Beloved Community is always carried forward with others. It is never a “solo act.” This requires patience and the ability to pardon.

7. See ourselves as a part of the whole creation to which we foster a relationship of love, not of mastery, remembering that the destruction of our planet is a profoundly spiritual problem, not simply a scientific or technological one. We are one.

8. Be ready to suffer, perhaps even with joy, if we believe this will help liberate the Divine in others. This includes the ac-ceptance of our place and moment in history with its trauma, with its ambiguities.

9. Be capable of celebration, of joy, when the presence of God has been accepted, and when it has not been to help discover and recognize this fact.

10. Slow down, to be patient, planting the seeds of love and forgiveness in our own hearts and in the hearts of those around us. Slowly we will grow in love, compassion and the capacity to forgive.
