The Gospels of Easter deal with the Resurrection Appearances of the Lord. Today we hear of the Lord’s appearance to two of his dejected disciples who are leaving Jerusalem in a demoral-ized state on the evening of the Lord’s Resurrection. The common thread of the Resurrection Appearances is that his disciples fail to recognize Jesus, even though they had been his longtime collaborators during his public ministry. It is speculated that this is because his appearance has changed; perhaps his altered appearance during the Transfiguration may have been a foretaste of the Glorified and Resurrected Lord. We can empathize with the feelings of the two disciples in the Gospel today. They are trying to make sense of everything that had occurred in the past days and are bewildered and dejected.

They are joined by a stranger on their walk who they fail to recognize as the Lord. Jesus asks what they are discussing and invites them to share their reflections with him. After they have shared their experiences, Jesus offers his interpretation of these events, based on the Hebrew Scriptures. In that encounter we find the model for our Liturgy of the Word which forms the first part of our Eucharistic Celebrations. Celebrating the Eucharist, we are asked as a community to reflect on our lived experiences and interpret them in the light of the Scriptures. We gather together on Sundays to break open the Word of God for precisely this purpose.

In the next part of the story we find the model for our Liturgy of the Eucharist. The disciples invite their new companion to stay and share a meal with them. During the ensuing meal they come to recognize the Lord in the breaking and sharing of the bread. In the Eucharist we share in the breaking of the bread and discover Jesus in our midst. Just as the disciples hurried back to share their experience with their fellow disciples in Jerusalem, we too are sent from our Eucharistic gathering. Our experience of the Lord in the Eucharist, should compel us to share our collective story with others through lives of service to one another and the greater community.Today’s Gospel provides much fruit for a lifetime of reflection and indeed all lifetimes. The Arch-diocese of Dublin, Ireland , my home Diocese, conducted an extended Lenten/Easter program on this Gospel. The theme was “Recognize Him at the Breaking of Bread”. This took place in 1990 and one of the concluding events was the ordination of myself and five other priests which reminds us of the necessity to pray for more vocations to the Priesthood and Religious Life.

Pax et Bonum, Fr. Des.Congratulations to all the candidates who are being confirmed by Bishop Weigand at the 12 noon Mass this weekend. Blessings to their parents and relatives; particular thanks to the Catechists and all who give of their time and service to the important work of Faith Formation at St.Francis. May our Confirmation Celebrations be a source of blessing and renewal to our Parish.

Little White Books for The Easter Season

You may pick up a copy of this very popular booklet of

reflections for the Easter season after Mass or during the week at the Parish Center. $1 each.

Reflections will be based on the Resurrection narrative of Mark, and begin on Easter Monday, April 17, 2017 and end Pentecost Sunday, June 4, 2017. Continue the journey!

EASTER STATionS of ThE LighT TWo Today’s Gospel is the story of whom St. Luke calls “two of Jesus’ disciples” who were walking to Emmaus; both were joined by a companion along the road, whom they did not recognize. (Notice,

please, that these were two of Jesus’ disciples who somehow didn’t recognize the person walking with them!) After some conversation they decided to invite their compan-ion to stay at their house, still not sure who he was. And then we hear the familiar outcome as they were breaking bread “their eyes were opened and they recognized him.”

In his encyclical ‘Laudato Si’ Pope Francis writes: ‘The urgent challenge to protect our common home includes a concern to bring the whole human family together to seek a sustainable and integral development, for we know that things can change.’

Putting these two paragraphs together, each of us can wonder: When am I invited by God to “bring the whole human family together?” What does that imply in my day by day existence as I walk along the road?.... Do I go it alone, or can I recognize that the Power of the risen Christ is with me and within me?.... Lastly, as Pope Francis suggests: Will I accept the courage to change the things I can?

Catholic Home Mission Appeal This WeekendSupport the Catholic Home Missions Appeal today! Right now, over 40 percent of dioceses in the United States are considered home missions because they are unable to fund essential pastoral work needed in their communities. Your sup-

port funds programs—such as religious education, seminary formation, and lay ministry training—to build vibrant faith communities right here in the United States. Please be generous. More information can be found at www.usccb.org/home-missions.

Events in our lives can affect our faith in different ways. Transitioning to college life is one of those events that can affect students and their parents alike. The Diocese of Sacramento would like to invite students and their families to a day of sharing from current college students, parents, and the greater community to discuss the Catholic view of transitioning to college life. There will be workshops specific to students, and parents, as well as a special family mass with Bishop Cotta to celebrate the graduation of the seniors.

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace;where there is hatred, let me sow love;where there is injury, pardon;where there is doubt, faith;where there is despair, hope;where there is darkness, light;and where there is sadness, joy. O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled, as to console;to be understood, as to understand;to be loved, as to love;for it is in giving that we receive,it is in pardoning that we are pardoned, and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. Amen.

Let us pray for the grace to never grow tired of drawing from the well of the Father’s mercy and bringing it to the world.

While this prayer has always been attributed to St. Francis, the author is actually unknown. The prayer does wonderfully represent the spirit of St. Francis and Franciscan Orders.

A Call to Worship!!The music ministry at St. Francis presents a unique opportunity to serve the parish community. We have over 50 parishioners who volunteer their time

weekly to deliver God’s message through song and praise. As liturgical ministers we are striving to grow our relationship with Christ, responding in love to those with whom we share this ministry, and proclaiming the Good News to all. Do you have an interest in joining our music ministry, but don’t know where or when to start? Fear not! We are searching for volunteers to help us proclaim the Word of God and we’ll be happy to help you develop your musical skills regardless of experience. We encourage you to try us out and see if the music ministry benefits you in mind, body, spirit, and soul! With your gifts, help us create a beautiful worship environment for our community! Contact Tim Mascarinas (916)-443-8084 x103, [email protected] for more information.

2017 Parish Council Elections

There is no doubt that St. Francis Parish is a special place.

We are very blessed to have such a welcoming, inclusive and vibrant parish for our spiritual home. Fr. Des and all of the parish staff—and our many volunteers work very hard to make St. Francis Parish what it is, and we are all grateful for their efforts.

This time of year, however, we have the opportunity to do more than just be grateful! Our Parish Council Elections will be held the weekend of June 3/4. We all have different gifts to bring to the table; but, unfortunately, for many of us the thought of running for election is a little bit outside our comfort zone. If being part of the Parish Council is something you would like to do, don’t let a little anxiety get in your way! Go ahead and throw your hat into the ring and see what happens!

The Parish Council is an elected body of 15 parishioners. Council members serve a term of three years. The Parish Council’s mission is to help bring the concerns, the hopes, and the ideas of the parish to Fr. Des. Working together with Fr. Des and the Parish Staff, the Council helps to discern what God is calling us, as a parish, to do. A good example of this was the Pastoral Action Plan that gave us a blueprint to follow in the areas of Evangelization, Outreach, Liturgy/Spirituality, Facilities, Parish/School Relationship, and Finances.

If you are interested in running, pick up an application in the church literature racks, or at www.stfrancisparish.com/PC/apply.pdf. If you have questions, current members of the Council will be available after the Masses, or you can email questions to [email protected].

Deadline to apply: May 15
