This week we begin Catholic Schools week, and after the 11:30 mass this Sunday there is an Open House at both the Franciscan School and the Preschool. Both of our schools are gems that add life to our Franciscan experience here. Please consider dropping by for a tour of the

schools and to learn more about education here for pre-K through eighth grade. Also a reminder that the 2018 Bishop’s Annual Appeal is now underway and as always we ask that you please consider making a donation to the BAA on behalf of St. Francis. If you have questions about the BAA, please contact Deb Royals-Mizerk in our stewardship office.

You may have heard that Fr. Jim Sabak’s stepfather, Al Merando, died on Wednesday, January 17 in Connecticut. Jim was there last week for the funeral and we remember Jim’s stepfather and family in our prayers here.

Blessings on your week!

I spent a great deal of time today

Counting my blessings.

Franciscan Statement at the Anniversary of Roe v. Wade

January 19, 2018

As Franciscans, our approach to social issues is always to seek deep solidarity with those who are vulnerable or on the margins of society. This stance was embodied by our founder, St. Francis of Assisi, who ignored the norms of his society and made direct encounter with the most despised and vulnerable of his time a priority. When we embrace our world, we seek to repair broken relations that lead to a variety of social issues and maladies: turning away the stranger/the immigrant; the challenge of climate change; lack of care for the elderly and disabled - both physically and mentally; a dis-ease with the dying process; the death penalty; and, as we mark the anniversary of the Roe v. Wade decision, a particularly tragic one, abortion. Our approach is in line with the leadership of the Catholic church in that we utilize the rubric of the consistent ethic of life. Some criticize this approach, claiming that the consistent ethic of life “waters down abortion” so that it becomes just one of many issues, or that its use does not pointedly challenge persons who might be called “pro-choice.” These criticisms may be fair in some circumstances where the consistent ethic of life is not held in its entirety and, therefore, does not see and respond to attacks on life at all its stages. Nonetheless, the consistent ethic of life teaching is central to the way our Church leadership engages with the world.

The consistent ethic of life is the methodology utilized by the U.S. Catholic Bishops in their “Pastoral Plan for Pro-Life Activities.” In the plan, they quote Pope St. John Paul II and insist, “Where life is involved, the service of charity must be profoundly consistent. It cannot tolerate bias and discrimination, for human life is sacred and inviolable at every stage and in every situation; it is an indivisible good. We need then to ‘show care’ for all life and for the life of everyone.”

Our Holy Father, Pope Francis also uses the consistent ethic of life in his teaching as reflected in Laudato Si. He writes:

The culture of relativism is the same disorder which drives one person to take advantage of another, to treat others as mere objects, imposing forced labor on them or enslaving them to pay their debts. The same kind of thinking leads to the sexual exploitation of children and abandonment of the elderly who no longer serve our interests. It is also the mindset of those who say: Let us allow the invisible forces of the market to regulate the economy, and consider their impact on society and nature as collateral damage. In the absence of objective truths or sound principles other than the satisfaction of our own desires and immediate needs, what limits can be placed on human trafficking, organized crime, the drug trade, commerce in blood diamonds and the fur of endangered species? Is it not the same relativistic logic which justifies buying the organs of the poor for resale or use in experimentation, or eliminating children because they are not what their parents wanted? This same “use and throw away” logic generates so much waste, because of the disordered desire to consume more than what is really necessary. (emphasis added by provincials)

Our own “Franciscan stance” also reflects the consistent ethic of life in that we ground all our action in the radical interconnectedness of all creation. In authentically following Francis of Assisi’s embrace of the most vulnerable, we must view all the various “issues” we face in the context of this

If you love someone who has an illness or condition, you know despite the best efforts, the disease sometimes takes control. It’s true with physical conditions like high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. It’s also true for people with depression, substance abuse, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and autism. In fact, if you’re involved in this person’s care, you know that sometimes the best thing you can do is be there – before the crisis when you may see signs of upcoming difficulties, during the crisis to make sure there’s no permanent damage, and when the crisis passes to help re-connect the pieces of the person’s life. But being there is sometimes the hardest thing to do. It takes a toll. If you’ve nodded at any of the preceding statements, I want you to consider signing up for a series of meetings being held here at St. Francis. NAMI – the National Associate on Mental Illness – will be offering a 12 week course to those who love someone with mental illness. The course is taught by other experienced family members who are familiar with the journey of mental illness. The discussions cover basic information about mental illnesses, such as mood disorders (bipolar disorder and major depression), panic disorder, schizophrenia, borderline personality disorder, PTSD, obsessive compulsive disorder and other major mental illnesses, as well as, coping skills such as handling crisis and relapse, suicide prevention, basic information about medications, listening and communication techniques, problem-solving skills, recovery and rehabilitation, and self-care around worry and stress. Here’s what you can expect from each session:• Meets for 12 sessions, 2.5 hours each, free of cost.• Designed for loved ones (over age 18) of individuals living

with mental illness.• Taught by trained family members of individuals living

with mental illness.• Provides critical information and strategies related to caregiving.• Incorporates presentations, discussion, and exercises.• Designated an Evidence Based Practice in 2013 by SAMHSA.

If you’ve lived with someone with mental illness, you know the basic infor-mation about the illness of your loved one, but the value of these gather-ings is to be able to discuss how these illnesses affect your loved one, you , and your family. You will hear how others have coped and you will gain insights into how to manage both the good days as well as the bad days. Register for this important course at www.stfrancisraleigh.org/nami/. If you need more information, there’s a video at http://www.namimaine.org/?page=FamilyToFamily If you can’t make this course, please reach out to me so we can help get you connected with available resources, both within St. Francis and the greater community. And know that we’ll be there for you. Before, during, and after the crisis. In the hard spots and the harder spots. Because that’s what family does for family. For more infor-mation contact [email protected], 919-847-8205x241.

Schools typically observe the annual celebration week with special Masses, open houses, and other activities for students, families, parishioners, and community members. Through these events, Catholic schools across the United States focus on the value Catholic education provides to young people and its contributions to our church, our communities, and our nation. After the 11:30 Mass on Sunday, January 28, we invite you to join us for Open House at both The Franciscan School and the St. Francis Preschool from 12:30 until 2:30pm.
