BREAKING OPEN THE WORD

12th Sunday in Ordinary Time ~ June 21, 2020

BREAKING OPEN THE WORD

12th Sunday in Ordinary Time ~ June 21, 2020 A few days before this Sunday is the Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus on Friday, June 19. Touching the Sacred Heart, especially through the Enthronement in our home, was a spiritual landmark for our family. Pope Benedict XVI describes the Sacred Heart this way: “Even our short comings, our limitations and our weaknesses must lead us back to the Heart of Jesus. We need to make ourselves a gift of love without reserve.”

Jeremiah 20:10-13 The Lord has rescued the life of the poor from the power of the wicked.” Do you feel rescued? The Heart of Jesus can provide much of what we need during this time.

Romans 5:12-15 This reading affirms the magnitude of the gift of Jesus’ life, death and resurrection. God’s love is far more powerful than our sin or the sins of the world. We need to see all of life as God’s gift to us. Jesus comes to meet us where we are.

Matthew 10:26-33 Jesus said: “Fear no one.” He also said in Mark’s gospel that “Fear is useless, what is needed is trust.” During these days, fear is rampant in our world as well as our families. The Heart of Jesus will lead you out of fear and into trust. We simply need to ask for His help.

The Corner Brought to you by your Evangelization Team

Did you know…? The Feast of Corpus Christi was established in 1264 when it was proposed by St. Thomas Aquinas to Pope Urban IV, in order to create a feast focused solely on the Holy Eucharist, emphasizing the joy of the Eucharist being the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of Our Lord Jesus Christ.

SPIRITUAL ADOPTION PRAYER PROGRAM

Ninth Month Congratulations! Your spiritually adopted baby is born this month! They are around 7 ½ pounds and 20 inches long. Their birth was not the beginning of their life though. Their life began nine months ago when each parent contributed the genetic materials to form this unique human being—including the instructions for their hair and eye color, facial features, health, talents, intelligence and personality. At that miraculous moment they also received their soul from God making them an immortal being—God’s plan for them is to live their life on earth then join Him in their heavenly home forever. Never before in history, nor ever again, will anyone exist who is just like your spiritually adopted baby. Your prayers have been invaluable for this baby and their mother. You will surely meet each other in heaven!

All-powerful and ever-living God, when Abraham left his native land and departed from his people, You kept him safe through all his journeys. Protect these soldiers. Be their constant companion and their strength in battle, their refuge in every adversity. Guide them, O Lord that they may return home in safety. We ask this through Christ Our Lord. Amen.

PRAYER FOR THE CLASS OF 2020 God, we give thanks for those who have run the race and finished the … courses, for those approaching the end of grade school, high school or college, apprenticeship or graduate programs and especially for this year’s class for whom everything has changed and they feel short-changed. We pray for those who are missing the last year of spring sports or musicals, celebrated acceptances, whispered rejections, the senior prom, dinner, baccalaureate, walking the stage, flipping the tassel, tossing the cap, perhaps in front of guests even more proud to witness an achievement they did not have …and so many graduation parties. We pray for those for whom losing a job that is not deemed essential has changed the future completely, and for those for whom the most important part of any of this year was sharing it in-person with friends, (in spite of jokes about their phones). We rejoice at the way they make a lifeline from those phones, offering mutual support in hard times, and for ingenious distance learning, amazing teachers offering high quality education, provisions of laptops and hotspots, and for the creativity of virtual ceremonies, yes, even Minecraft, the possibilities for re-scheduled graduations, and the sweet inventiveness of family and friends to find special ways to say — WELL DONE, TO THE CLASS OF THE YEAR OF THE BUBBLE WHO SPARKLE WITH A RAINBOW ALL THEIR OWN. AMEN

TTHE MOST HOLY BODY AND BLOOD

~Reflection by Rev. Leonard N. Peterson

There it sat, looking lonely among the taller offerings in the supermarket Easter flower section. A tricolor hyacinth in the colors of Lent and Easter: purple, pink, and white. I picked it up to grace the room where I pray. There I was delighted by the plant’s unique fragrance. However it soon gave in to that habit of hyacinths to lean down one way or another. But what struck me this time was the fact that the plant seemed to lean toward the light coming from the window. It was yearning for the sun. Yearning for the sun. Think about that. All you have to do is change the lone vowel in “sun” from “u” to “o” and you have the lifelong motivation of a Christian: “Yearning for the Son.” The Son of God, Our risen Lord Jesus Christ. The wonderful truth that we can see and touch the very Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Christ in the Holy Eucharist fulfills that yearning. Some day, when we get to see the Lord face to face, yearning will evaporate. In the meantime we have this special feast of “Corpus Christi,” the Body of Christ, to celebrate this greatest treasure of our Church. The feast originated in 1246 when Robert de Torote, bishop of Liège, ordered the festival celebrated in his diocese. He was persuaded to initiate the feast by St. Juliana, prioress of Mont Cornillon near Liège, who had experienced a vision. It did not spread until 1261, when Jacques Pantaléon, formerly archdeacon of Liège, became pope as Urban IV. In 1264 he ordered the whole church to observe the feast. Urban’s order was confirmed by Pope Clement V at the Council of Vienne in 1311–12. By the mid-14th century the festival was generally accepted, and in the 15th century it became, in effect, one of the principal feasts of the Church. By its calendar placement, this feast gives us the occasion to ponder Christ’s gift to us of Himself at the Last Supper. On Holy Thursday, the pending Passion of Our Lord’s death hung in the air with sober sadness over that Upper Room. On that same evening, in this strange unforgettable year, we lived under the pressure of a mandate to stay home. A virus took away our physical participation. Our yearning for the Lord intensified, and we all felt it. All of our great Church saints had exemplary faith in Christ’s gift of Himself in this sacrament. They had the same yearning for the Son of God that we do. And like that little hyacinth plant leaning toward the light-filled window, we also lean toward the One Person who fills our hearts and souls with the Light of Hope. As an anonymous writer put it: “Hope sees the invisible, feels the intangible, and achieves the impossible.”
