THE SANCTUARY CANDLE

This candle burns to remind us of the sacramental presence of Jesus Christ. If you wish to have the Sanctuary Candle burn for a week in memory of a loved

one, or for the Special Intention of a loved one, you can make arrangements by calling or mailing your request to the rectory. Offering of $20 is requested.

TO CONTACT FR. MATT: Please feel free to contact Fr. Matt with any questions or comments through email: [email protected]. You can always call the rectory at 610-543-0848 ext 126. Thank you!

FORTY HOURS UPDATE

The Forty Hours devotion is a really important devotion for our parish because it centers around the heart of who we are—dedication and devotion to Jesus present in the Holy Eucharist. Usually this devotion is held in the Fall here at St. Francis but because of COVID-19, we have decided to postpone it until either the winter or spring of 2021. By next year, let’s hope this whole Coronavirus is just a bad memory and we can gather as a parish community, on a larger scale than in the past, in honor of the Holy Eucharist!

CONGRATULATIONS!

Congratulations to one of our parishioners, Mr. Jim McGonigal, for receiving the Ministry of Acolyte on Saturday, September 12th! Jim is studying to be a Permanent Deacon, and this is another step along the journey—it’s a long one too—it takes 6 years of prayer and study. Congratulations to Jim and his family!

WEDDINGS Encourage your children to have a Catholic wedding! St. Francis is the perfect spot to have a wedding Mass or ceremony (shorter Catholic ritual without a full Mass). If your son or daughter wants to have a Catholic ceremony at the location of their reception (for example, Springfield Country Club), we can now do that too because our new Archbishop has relaxed the regulations surrounding Catholic weddings. Also, if you were married at a destination wedding (remember those days of travelling, aah), give us a call and we can bless your civil marriage; it only takes a phone call and 25 minutes of your time at a date of your choosing. The Church as a whole has seen a pretty steep decline in marriages but here at St. Francis, there’s been a pretty big uptick, to the point we have to tell couples that particular dates are no longer available; it’s really encouraging to see! 1-175

Page 3: ST. FRANCIS OF ASSISI ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCHSep 27, 2020  · St. Francis Over 50 Club at 136 Saxer Ave. Springfield 19064 by mail, or st.francis.over.50.club@gmail.com by email. Deadline

I’ll share with you an email I just received about a recent wedding here at St. Francis as a source of encouragement to couples who may feel hesitant on contacting us for a Catholic wedding: “Hi Father Matt, I just want to take a moment to thank you for marrying us on 9/12. The Mass was everything we had wanted and more. You made it very personable which is exactly what we had envisioned. Some of our guests even said they want to go back to church or want to get married in the church after being a part of our Mass. Thank you so much for everything.”

I love how that recently married couple said “our Mass” because it truly was a Mass for them and for their future lives together! We can easily make this the case of any couple (parishioner or not) here at St. Francis or at one of our local venues. + In Christ, Rev. Matthew J Tralies

BLESSING OF THE ANIMALS

The Blessing of the Animals will take place Sunday, October 4th, at 1:30PM, at the St. Francis statue, between the Church and the Primary School.

ST. JOHN’S HOSPICE Thank you for your generous donations in the past to the breakfast collection for the homeless men. Our next collection will be October 3rd & 4th.

MASS CARDS and APPOINTMENTS During this current COVID situation, the rectory remains closed. Staff is only in the rectory limited days/hours as of now. Fr. Matt

and staff are meeting with people by Appointment ONLY. Masks and safe distancing are mandatory.

Announced Masses and unannounced Masses can be obtained by emailing Joan Curtis [email protected] or leaving a

voicemail message on 610-543-0848 ext 110. Please leave the date you wish to obtain, (no more than a year in advance) and the name of the recipient of the Mass. We will do our best to accommodate

your date request. Mass stipend: $10. Please pay the stipend within a week of the request, as there are

other people who are requesting the same dates. If we don’t receive the stipend, the Mass cannot be held for you.

We are happy to mail them to you or to the family or you may pick them up outside the office when they are prepared.

Thank you for your understanding.

ST. VINCENT de PAUL SOCIETY The St. Vincent de Paul Society would like to thank everyone who has contributed during these difficult times. Because of these

donations, we were able to help many who are struggling. Unfortunately, our treasury is very low at this time and we ask, if you are able, to make a donation of any amount. This would enable us to continue helping those in need.

BREAKING OPEN THE WORD 27th Sunday in Ordinary Time ~ October 4th, 2020

Isaiah 5:1-7

We can do better. We should do better. God expects us to do better. But tragically, instead of justice, God sees violence; and instead of righteousness, God hears the cries of victims. If you imagine yourself as a vine in God’s vineyard, what “good fruit” would you like to offer to God?

Philippians 4:6-9 Do you ever get so frustrated that all your prayers are going unanswered? You pray to God then sit back and worry about the outcome, instead of putting your needs in God’s hands. What makes you anxious today that you can give over to God? ♫ Let it go…Let it go ♫

Matthew 21:33-43 Every one of us has been given a vineyard by God. Your families, communities, work, church, and environment: are all parts of your vineyard. God does not exclude anyone from their vineyard. People exclude themselves by failing to tend the vineyard they have been given. You are called by God to produce good fruits in this vineyard. In this time of pandemic and social unrest, how are you using the gifts God gave you to help others?

Our Lady, Queen of Peace Presidium Legion of Mary

We invite you to become an auxiliary member of The Legion of Mary. There are no meetings to attend and no dues to pay. Auxiliary members commit to praying the prayers of a small pamphlet (called the Tessera) each day as well as five decades of the rosary. If you are already praying the rosary, you need not add an additional five decades. The prayers of the Tessera may be said together or divided throughout the day. The Legion recommends that you offer your prayers as an unreserved gift to Our Lady. If you are interested in becoming an auxiliary member of the Legion of Mary, please call Gus McClay at 610-544-7223 or contact Joy Van Berg at 610-328-2095 or [email protected].

Anyone who is interested in making meals or soups for those people on the Caring For Friends meal delivery

program can drop them off at the St. Kevin’s Parish Center. The Parish Center is open 24 hours/7 days a week.
