SAINT TERESA BENEDICTA OF THE CROSS (EDITH STEIN) (1891-1942)

August 9

“Come,” Edith gently whispered, taking her sister Rosa’s hand, “let us go for our people!” These were Edith Stein’s last words as the Nazis, enraged at the Dutch bishops’ condemnation of their genocide, took into custody all Catholic converts from Judaism. Born Jewish, but non-practicing from her teens, Edith’s search for truth led to a doctorate in philosophy, a brilliant career as professor and author and, finally, to the Autobiography of Saint Teresa of Ávila, which she read in one sitting, then declared, “That is the Truth!” Baptized on January 1, 1922, observed then as the feast of Jesus’ initiation into the covenant of Abraham, confirmed on February 2, the feast of Jesus’ Presentation in the Temple, Edith entered the cloistered Carmelites in Cologne, transferring to a convent in Holland when she realized that, because of the Nazi persecution of the Jews, her presence could imperil the safety of the other nuns. She died in the gas chambers of Auschwitz as a daughter of Israel and of the Church. —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

THE PRESENCE OF GOD

After the miracle of Jesus walking on water, the disciples exclaimed, “Truly, you are the Son of God” (Matthew 14:33). Most Christians will probably never experience such a dramatic miracle. Like Elijah, we await the manifestation of God in other moments. Perhaps the biggest challenge for the believer is to be constantly attuned to the possible presence of God in the everyday events of life. This is a stance that takes some people years to develop. Others seem to find the Lord easily in the simple things. As the week unfolds, let us look for the presence of God in the little things around us. Perhaps, like Elijah, we will be surprised at what we find. And, like the disciples, we can add our voice to the confession, “Truly you are the Son of God.” Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Some of the Precious Souls on their journey to Sainthood

Servant of God ~Venerable ~ Blessed ~ Saint

Fr. Augustus Tolton (1845-1897) - Known for his great homilies, beautiful singing voice and life of Heroic Virtue. A shining example of Christian life. People from various denominations went to his church to hear him preach. Fr. Tolton is the first Black American Priest in the United States of America. He had been a former slave. He was made Venerable by Pope Francis in 2019. https://tolton.archchicago.org/ is the website for his cause and a prayer to him. He is sponsored by the Arch Diocese of Chicago.

Charlene Richard (1947-1959) - Called “The Little Cajun Saint”, from Richard, Louisiana. Lafayette Bishop Deshotel has officially named Charlene, Servant of God, which is the first step to Sainthood. It has always been the belief of her community that she is a saint. Suffering from lymphatic leukemia, the hospital chaplain and staff noted her calmness and cheerfulness and that she was offering all of her sufferings to God for souls. She prayed for certain sick individuals and they were either healed or converted. She was a faith filled little girl. She was only 12 years old. www.charlenerichard.com and www.semperficatholic.com are 2 websites with information on Charlene and her beatification process and a prayer for her.

Fr. Michael McGivney (1852-1890) - American Catholic priest from Connecticut who founded the world’s largest Catholic Fraternal Service Organization. It was named for the explorer, Christopher Columbus. McGivney was deeply charitable, and had great care for the poor. He died of pneumonia in 1890 from a coronavirus pandemic. Presently, he is a Venerable Servant of God, a title bestowed on March 15, 2008, when his heroic virtue was recognized by Pope Benedict XVI. On May 26, 2020, Father McGivney took another step toward sainthood when Pope Francis approved the promulgation of a decree recognizing a miracle attributed to his intercession. With the approval of this miracle, he is expected to be beatified soon, with the title of Blessed. Fr. Michael McGivney, the founder of the Knights of Columbus, will be beatified during a special Mass Oct. 31 at the Cathedral of St. Joseph in Hartford.

https://www.fathermcgivney.org/ The cause for his canonization started in the Archdiocese of Hartford, CT

Fr. Solanus Casey (1870-1957) - a Capuchin Franciscan friar who worked for nearly 20 years in the New York area before getting reassigned to St. Bonaventure Monastery in Detroit where he also worked for 20 years. Fr. Solanus spent his life in the service of people. Many people believed he had the gifts of healing and prophecy; they attributed favors to his prayers. He constantly showed his love of God by loving all of God’s people. During his final illness, he remarked: "I'm offering my suffering that all might be one. If only I could see the conversion of the whole world." His last conscious act was to sit up in bed and exclaim, "I give my soul to Jesus Christ." He died in Detroit at the age of 86 on July 31, 1957 and is buried at St. Bonaventure Monastery. As of 2017, Fr. Solanus is Beatified and is now known as Blessed. https://solanuscasey.org/

Help serve our Catholic Community! Membership for 2020-2021

ST. FRANCIS ALTAR SOCIETY

JOIN US IN SERVICE! There is much to do and we are seeking members to join us in our good works and fellowship. The Altar Society is a worthwhile ministry. Funds generated through membership dues and fund-raisers are used for altar needs: the supplying of altar bread and wine, candles, vessels and vestments for priest, deacons, and altar servers. We purchase the palms distributed on Palm Sunday and other altar needs. We are responsible for light altar cleaning on a weekly basis and major cleaning of the church twice a year. We realize that many of our ladies work & cannot attend meetings. We still want you to be part of our membership. When you can attend a meeting or help with something we might be doing, that will be great! Our meetings are normally held on the second Thursday of each month at 9:30 a.m. in the St. Francis/St. Clare room. Annual membership dues of $20.00 are collected each August. Our membership year is from August 1st through July 31st each year. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Please join us as we look forward to a year of working together in fun and fellowship! Simply fill out the form and we will see that you are put on our membership roster for 2020-2021. Mail your form and $20.00 check made payable to St. Francis to: Mary Rollins, 2886 Ben Mac Rd, Orange, TX 77632, drop it by the church office or drop it in the collection basket in an envelope marked Altar Society.
