A Meditation for August 2nd

Have you ever dreamed about being born into a fabu-lously wealthy family? What would you do with all that money? Well, the truth is that in God, you have the richest Father imaginable! He owns everything in the universe, and he even has the power to create whatever else he wants to. What’s more, God’s heart is so full of love that he can’t help but lavish priceless gifts upon his children. When the Israelites asked for food in the desert, God gave them exactly what they needed. He wasn’t put off by their grumblings but fed them with manna. Again, when crowds of people gathered around Jesus, he not only fed them, he gave them more than they could eat. In both instances, God’s main goal was to show his over-flowing love in such a way that it would move people to trust him with their lives. Those who crowded around Jesus asked him a simple question: “What can we do to accomplish the works of God?” And he gave an equally simple answer: “Believe in the one he sent” (John 6:28-29). The greatest “work of God” we can ever do is open our-selves to him so that he can fill us with his treasures and change us into his image. Scripture gives many examples of people who opened themselves to God and were changed. Cornelius sought God in prayer and was surprised by the Holy Spirit ) Acts 10). Mary Magdalene pursued Jesus wholeheartedly and found him at the tomb (Luke 24:1-9). Paul and Silas sang and worshipped God and were released from prison (Acts 16:16-34). We are all hungry for God’s love and thirsty for his grace. If we can just sit quietly before the Lord each day in prayer and receive his body and blood at Mass with open hearts, he will feed us. He will lavish us with the best of gifts, and we will find ourselves doing his work as a re-sult. “Jesus, I marvel at your desire to fill me to overflowing. You are the bread of life. Help me to open my heart to you today.” THE WORD AMONG US

Meet & Greet You are invited to stop in St. Clare Hall this weekend after any Mass and welcome Father Jeff Holtman to our parish. From the Desk of Fr. Jeff Maybe it’s because I am 52 years young or maybe it’s because I am a priest (24 years this May), but folks naturally think I’ve always been a Franciscan friar. In actuality I’ve only been a Franciscan friar in the Sacred Heart Province for almost 4 years now. I grew up in Quincy in an era when it was quite Catholic and quite Franciscan. I was born in St. Mary Hospital owned and staffed by Franciscan Sisters and one of the Sisters told my mom how my name would be spelled –J-e-f-f-r-y– no discussion. I grew up in a diocesan parish, but on the week-ends Franciscan Friars from Quincy College would offer Mass, and I was impressed by their gentle, kind spirit with us servers. In eighth grade, I came across an ad for their High School Seminary in Oakbrook, IL, and after a weekend visit knew that a Franciscan and a priest is what I wanted to be. I did attend that seminary and graduated and was sorry to leave it as it was a wonderful experience. I then attended the college seminary in Quincy for two years and ended up leaving and finishing col-lege on my own. I kept with my Franciscan journey by joining the Third Order/Secular Franciscans, which helped me through the years in my spiritual life. The call to priesthood was still with me, so with the help and encouragement of my pastor, Fr. John Bertman and a friar, Fr. Samuel Martin, I began studies for the priesthood for the Springfield, IL diocese. I attended Kenrick Seminary in St. Louis for theology studies and was ordained a deacon in 1984 and then a priest in 1985. I served the diocese for twenty years both as parochial vicar and as a pastor before finally, with the help of a number of friars and friends, took the plunge to leave what was VERY familiar and comfortable and join the friars. My first three years have been typical of one entering the Order. First, I was a postulant for a year, then a novice for a year, followed by a year of on-going formation in Chicago as I ministered in a parish, hospital and nursing home doing priestly supply work. I also took a Spanish course and theology courses for renewal. The past ten months I lived and worked with one friar in Northern Wisconsin ministering in five par-ishes. At the end of novitiate, the novice professes his vows of poverty, chastity and obedience (hence the three knots on the cord) and for three-five years after that, lives those vows as he and the fraternity live with each other to see if this is God’s will. This continues to be for me a time of discernment, which God willing, will lead to Solemn Profession. So my time here, hopefully for the next two years (because I am tired of mov-ing!), is an opportunity to do parish work while continuing reli-gious formation in preparation for solemn (final) vows. This necessitates my being away for short periods of time for forma-tion gatherings in the Province. Is it everything I thought it would be? No, but then that’s what makes life so exciting, when one is open to the Spirit. Pray for me to be a good friar and priest as I pray for you. In the words of Holy Father, St. Francis, Peace and All Good! Father Jeff Holy Humor…Question: What is JUSTICE?

Answer: When kids have kids of their own.
