SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 02, 2020 FEAST OF THE PRESENTATION OF THE LORD

The presentation in the Temple Lk 2:22-40 After Jesus' birth, Joseph and Mary fulfilled the

Jewish rite of purification of the mother after childbirth and the rite of presentation of the first-born male child to God. Since Mary and Joseph could not afford the customary offering of a lamb in sacrifice to God, they instead gave two pigeons or turtle doves as their sacrificial offering of gratitude. They understood that Jesus, like every child, was a pure gift from God. When Mary and Joseph presented the infant Jesus in the Temple in Jerusalem, Jesus was recognized by an elderly man, Simeon, who was a just and devout Jew. Simeon had waited all his life for a Redeemer. Inspired by the Holy Spirit, Simeon understood the identity of Jesus and prophesied that Jesus would be "a revealing light to the Gentiles.” The Holy Spirit enabled him to comprehend that Jesus was the long-awaited Messiah of God. In the temple that day, there was also an elderly, devout woman, Anna, who like Simeon was filled with the Holy Spirit. Anna also recognized who Jesus was. The Scriptures record that Anna was in the Temple daily, attending to the Lord in prayer and speaking prophetically about God's promise of salvation. Anna was preeminently a woman of hope in the fulfillment of God’s promises. Her hope in God fueled a zeal and fervor in prayer and service to God.

Are we like Simeon and Anna? Are we faithful to daily prayer? Do we go to Temple, which for us is our local Church for Mass? Do we hope in the Lord? Do we wait on the Lord until God’s plans and promises are fulfilled? Are we confident in God’s power and zealous in God’s service?

"Lord Jesus, you are our hope and our life. May we never cease to place all our trust in you. Fill us with the zeal and hope of the Holy Spirit that we may boldly point others to your saving power."

PASTOR’S COLUMN Welcome to Visitors, Coming Attractions and

Thank-Yous

We warmly welcome all visitors to our Church this weekend as we host the Medjugorje visionary, Ivan Dragicevic. We know some of you have come from quite a distance. Let us know if we can help you and welcome to our St. Francis Parish Community.

Next Saturday (Feb. 8), we will have our Quarterly Anointing of the Sick immediately after the 4 pm Vigil Mass. Anyone who is seriously ill or significantly weakened by age may receive the anointing. The weekend after next (February 15-16), at all the masses, we will have a Blessing of married couples who celebrate wedding anniversaries in the months of February, March and April. Join us as we pray for God’s blessings on married couples. And mark your calendars for upcoming spiritual enrichment opportunities: Dinner and Devotion (February 14); Men’s Day of Prayer (March 7); and our Parish Lenten Mission (March 9-11).

A THOUSAND THANK-YOUS About 200 parishioners attended our Volunteer Thank-You Party on January 25. It was a grand event. Special thanks to those who made the celebration possible, including David McDonald and friends for the amazing food; Carol Pritchard, Jessica Welty, Susan Murphy, Phyllis Jeandron and others for the terrific decoration of the Auditorium and the LSU Parade; Kathy Calder and Philip Giroir for the excellent slide show of parish and school events; Jack Siciliano for the beautiful flower arrangements; and our Parish Staff (Bessie, C.J. and Mona) for their many labors. And again, thanks to our wonderful St. Francis volunteers for the ongoing gift of your time and talent to our parish and school.

The Daughters of Isabella hosted an outstanding Luncheon, Production and Fundraiser at the Metairie Country Club on January 26. Thanks for the creativity of the entertainment, games and skits, and thanks for the awesome prizes. I won’t soon forget the sight of Fr. Thien gliding atop a surf board while wearing an inner tube! It was such fun. Thanks to all the patrons who attended and helped the Daughters raise funds for their Scholarship Fund for Catholic girls.

God bless, Fr. Joe
