Saint Gabriel the Archangel Saddle River

Roman Catholics in the United States spend a good deal of time speaking of “vocation” and the manner in which each of us discerns our vocation for life. In today’s apostolic letter, however, Peter gives us the “cornerstone” of our vocation, the description of what each of us is called to first and foremost by our baptism. He describes our vo-cation as “a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people of [God’s] own, so that you may announce the praises” of Christ, who called us out of darkness into light. All of us, no matter what path our life’s vocation may take us down, have been chosen by God, made holy, and anoint-ed as priests in the high priesthood of Christ through bap-tism. All of this, so that we may announce the praises of Christ. Vocation is given for proclamation at home, in the workplace or wherever life takes us, in service, in word, and in sacrament. Stay Safe. Fr. Frank Let us pray for each other during these most difficult days we are experiencing. I will keep you informed through our email system, Facebook and the parish website of any in-formation I receive from the Archdiocese of Newark.

FINANCIAL REPORT

The amount of the collection for May 3 was $11,904.79. Thank you for your generosity to St. Gabriel’s. God bless you and your family.

THE PRAYER OF POPE FRANCIS DURING THE CORONOAVIRUS PANDEMIC

At the foot of the Cross you participated in Jesus’ pain, with steadfast faith. You, Salvation of the Roman People, know what we need. We are certain that you will provide, so that, as you did at Cana of Galilee, joy and feasting might return after this moment of trial. Help us, Mother of Divine Love, to conform ourselves to the Father’s will and to do what Jesus tells us: He who took our sufferings upon Himself, and bore our sorrows to bring us, through the Cross, to the joy of the Resurrection. Amen. We seek ref-uge under your protection, O Holy Mother of God. Do not despise our pleas – we who are put to the test – and deliver us from every danger, O glorious and blessed Virgin.

COMMUNION PRAYER

The following is a Communion prayer that can be said when not being able to receive the Eucharist. This is from Bishop Barron’s televised mass from “Word on Fire.” My Jesus, I believe that you are present in the most Blessed Sacrament. I love You above all things and I desire to re-ceive You into my soul. Since I cannot now receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I em-brace You as if You were already there, and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.

ARCHDIOCESAN CEMETERIES UPDATE

Cardinal Tobin and the Archdiocesan leadership team continue to monitor the ongoing COVID-19 situation and to aggregate guid-ing information from federal, state and local officials. Based on the latest information shared publicly, following are updated directives regarding Catholic Cemeteries approved by Cardinal Tobin for the Archdiocese of Newark. On Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 10, all archdiocesan cemeteries will be open for visitation from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and will be open for visitation every Sunday, thereafter.

Beginning on Monday, May 11, up to 10 family members will be permitted to attend a burial service. (Currently, two family mem-bers only are permitted.) Until further notice, all committal ser-vices are limited to immediate family only and not to exceed the recommendations of New Jersey Executive Order No. 107 (2020) and Administrative Order 2020-04, that gatherings of 10 persons or fewer are permitted. Beginning on Monday, May 18, cemetery visitation will be per-mitted weekdays, Monday through Saturday, from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., after all interments are completed. Memorial Day Masses at our all archdiocesan cemeteries are postponed until further notice. Announcements are forthcoming regarding a live-stream or video of Memorial Day Mass at Holy Cross Cemetery. All persons entering archdiocesan cemetery and mausoleum premises must wear a facemask and practice social distanc-ing as per the state’s mandate. Signs will be posted in cemeteries. We urge all to please adhere to these guidelines for the protection of all. It would be disappointing to all if prior restrictions were

MEMORIAL OPPORTUNITIES

The parish recently purchased an altar cloth and a priest stole to use for our parish celebrations. If you are interested in memorializing one of these items in memory of a loved one, and would like more information, please contact Fr. Frank. St. Gabriel's continues to col-

lect Box Tops for St. Michael's School in New-ark. The Box Top program is one of the nation’s largest school fundraising loyalty

programs and has been helping schools succeed since 1996. With over 250 participating products, it’s an easy way for schools to earn cash for the things they need. Each Box Tops coupon is worth 10¢ and they add up fast! The cou-pons are on products we buy at our local supermarkets eve-ryday. St. Michael's will be able to use the Box Tops cash to buy whatever they need most, from books to supplies and other school programs. So please look for these cou-pons on your groceries and start to clip and save them until you can leave them in the collection box in the lobby of the church. As always, thank you for your support of St. Michael's.

REPORTING SEXUAL ABUSE

The Archdiocese requires us and all parishes to provide the following information to the general public. We do so here as a sign of our commit-ment to the safety of our children. In every activity of

St. Gabriel’s Parish, parents are encouraged to participate. Every employee and volunteer has passed a background check. Mrs. Patricia Pula serves as our Safe Environment Coordinator. The Archdiocese takes very seriously any and all allegations of sexual misconduct by members of the cler-gy, Religious and lay staff of the Archdiocese. We encour-age anyone with knowledge of an act of sexual misconduct to inform us immediately so that we may take appropriate action to protect others and provide support to victims of sexual abuse. Individuals who wish to report an allegation of sexual misconduct may do so by calling the Archdioce-san Office of Child and Youth Protection at (201) 407-3256.

HELP YOUR PARISH DURING THIS CRISIS

As of May 5 we have $7,875 pledged to the GoFundMe page the Archdiocese of Newark has asked each parish to set up. If you would like to contribute this way, please visit our parish GoFundMe page:

https://charity.gofundme.com/o/en/campaign/st-gabriels-saddle-river-nj

The GoFundMe page is in addition to the offerings we re-ceive on Faith Direct and the weekly envelopes. If you have not signed up for Faith Direct and would like to do so, please go to www.faithdirect.net . There you can register for an online account by using our parish code NJ361. I am so grateful for your prayers and generosity during this most difficult time. Let us continue to pray for each anoth-er! Fr. Frank

HOT MEALS IN HACKENSACK

St. Gabriel’s was scheduled to serve a hot meal in Hackensack on Saturday April 25. That was canceled but we recognize that the need is still there and could be greater than ever. Our Hot Meal program is part of Family Promise of Bergen County whose mission is to help the

homeless. So many of you care deeply about those at great-est risk and may wish to make a contribution. That may be done by sending a check made out to Family Promise of Bergen County with a notation for the Walk-In Dinner Pro-gram. It can be mailed to

WHY IS MARY PICTURED WITH A BLUE MANTLE

In the Old Testament, the Ark of the covenant was covered in blue (or violet) fabric for traveling (Numbers 4:5-6) God’s Presence would rest on the Ark as a king sits on his throne. (Exodus 25:22). When Mary agreed to be the Mother of Jesus, she became his living resting place. In art, Mary’s blue mantle signals she is the new Ark of the Covenant. Blue also indicates Mary’s royal status. Jesus is the King of Heaven making Mary the Queen Mother. In Biblical times, the mother (not the wife) of the king was the queen. She wasn't as powerful as the king but her intercession with him had significant influence. Mary is not God, but her intercessory prayers for us are powerful because she is Jesus’s mother. When we consider that Mary is also our mother by grace, her blue mantle in-vites us to entrust our concerns to her. Rather than an ob-

SAINTS OF THE WEEK

May 12 - Sts. Nereus and Achilleus (1st Century). Not much is known about them, but it is certain they were Ro-man soldiers under the Emperor Trajan. They converted to Christianity, were exiled from Rome, and eventually mar-tyred. May 14 - St. Matthias the Apostle (1st Century). Chosen by lot to replace Judas Iscariot, St. Matthias is onl men-tioned one in Scripture, but had accompanied Jesus and the Twelve from the beginning. He spent his life preaching the Good News until his martyrdom
