Saint Gabriel the Archangel Saddle River

The Church’s celebration three weeks ago of the Bap-tism of the Lord signaled the “official” end of the Christmas sea-son. Today’s feast of the Presentation of the Lord seems to ex-tend the Incarnation celebration a bit longer. In fact, some have called this feast a “second Epiphany.” The first reading recalls the anticipation of Advent, as Malachi writes, “Lo, I am sending my messenger to prepare the way before me.” The reading from Hebrews reminds us of the Incarnation, proclaiming that Jesus had a “share” in our own “blood and flesh.” The Gospel finds the infant Jesus on his first visit to Jerusalem and his human parents once again surprised and in awe over the events surround his birth. In the simplicity of the manger, in the grandeur of the temple, in the domesticity of Nazareth, Jesus comes. May we come to know him and so be filled with “wisdom” and the “favor of God.” Peace, Fr. Frank

ARCHBISHOP JOHN JOSEPH MYERS Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ, The physical and mental health of the Archbishop emeritus John Joseph Myers has suffered a serious decline. After a recent visit with his family in central Illinois, Archbishop Myers decided to remain in the region of his birth where he is receiving specialized care and can be visited by his family as well as the clergy of the Diocese of Peoria. I ask all the faithful in our Archdiocese to pray for Archbishop

Myers that the mercy of God comfort and strengthen him in this moment of fragility. If you would like to write to him, his address is:

Pleasant View 505 College Avenue

Ottawa, IL 61350 The Archdiocese has begun preparation for the sale of his retire-ment residence in Hunterdon County. After members of his fami-ly have collected his personal possessions, the home and property will be sold and the funds will be returned to the Archdiocese.

Sincerely yours in Christ the Redeemer, Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin, C.Ss.R.

WELL-PLACED FAITH

Our world is filled with pain, sorrow, and suffering. Putting our faith in worldly powers guarantees disappointment. Putting faith in God guarantees that we will never be disappointed. “Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word; for mine eyes have seen thy salvation which thou hast prepared in the presence of all peoples, a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and for glory to thy people Israel”

(Luke 2:29-32)

REPORTING SEXUAL ABUSE

The Archdiocese requires us and all parishes to provide the following infor-mation to the general public. We do so here as a sign of our commitment to the safety of our children. In every activity of St. Gabriel’s Parish, parents are en-

couraged to participate. Every employee and volunteer has passed a background check. Mrs. Patricia Pula serves as our Safe Environment Coordinator. The Archdiocese takes very seriously any and all allegations of sexual misconduct by members of the clergy, Religious and lay staff of the Archdiocese. We encourage anyone with knowledge of an act of sexual misconduct to inform us immediately so that we may take appropriate action to protect others and provide support to victims of sexual abuse. Individu-als who wish to report an allegation of sexual misconduct may do so by calling the Archdiocesan Office of Child and Youth Protec-tion at (201) 407-3256.

St. Gabriel's continues to collect Box Tops for St. Michael's School in New-ark. The Box Top program is one of the nation’s largest school fundraising loyalty programs and has been helping schools succeed since 1996. With over

250 participating products, it’s an easy way for schools to earn cash for the things they need. Each Box Tops coupon is worth 10¢ and they add up fast! The coupons are on products we buy at our local supermarkets everyday. St. Michael's will be able to use the Box Tops cash to buy whatever they need most, from books to supplies and other school programs. So please look for these coupons on your groceries and start to clip. There is a col-lection box display in the lobby of the church. As always, thank you for your support of St. Michael's.
