Saint Gabriel the Archangel Saddle River

Today’s readings take a fearless look at reality and reach a conclusion that we all know: life is hard. The prophet Malachi preaches fire and brimstone, warning us that evildoers will perish in flames. Saint Paul offers his own warning to the Thessalonians: keep busy, but never become a busybody. He reminds Christians that the apostles themselves worked in “toil and drudgery” as a model for how we ought to contribute to our community. The Gospel returns to the apocalyptic tone of Mala-chi, describing the utter chaos of the end-times. We will know the end is near when violence, catastrophe, and hatred dominate the earth. But we must not fear! God’s saving plan brings peace to our hearts. Malachi speaks of the sun’s “healing rays,” and Jesus himself promises to protect every hair on our heads. Peace, Fr. Frank

Day of the Dead Celebration In conjunction with

their Spanish curriculum, our 6th graders recently cele-brated the Day of the Dead.

Students composed prayers dedicated to their deceased loved ones and created brightly col-ored ofrendas, or altars, decorated with sym-

ANNUAL PARISH CHRISTMAS ART SHOW & SALE

This year's parish Art Show will take place on the weekend after Thanksgiving at the Kavin Center. The dates are Friday 11/29, Saturday 11/30, and Sunday 12/1 with viewing being from noon to 7PM on those days. You are in-vited to view a selection of artwork from your fellow parishioners. All of the award-winning artists have seriously pursued their craft and have exhibited their work in nationally renowned venues as both amateurs and professionals. This year we

will feature the works of: Nora Winn, a water-colorist, www.norawinn.com, who has won awards in juried shows throughout the northeast. Nora has exhib-ited and has been accepted to several organizations for watercol-orists including the famed Salmagundi Club in NYC. Carolyn Palmer, a sculptor,www.palmersculptures.com,whose bronze busts of the popes reside at St. Patrick's Cathedral in NYC. Carolyn has been commissioned to sculpt the likenesses of Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt, the Wright Brothers, and various other dignitaries. One of her most interesting works is the redux of the infamous Lucille Ball statute into a beautiful and lifelike work of art, an event in the national news. Carolyn will exhibit some of her miniature bronze works. Laura Paray, an oil painter, www.lauraparay.com. Laura is also an instructor at the famed Ridgewood Art Institute. She is known for her beautiful landscapes and seascapes as they capture the light flowing over the scene. Bob Rizzotti, a long-time oil painter who has shown his works at many art shows throughout the region. Bob specializes in magnif-icent and bright scenes of places throughout the world, perhaps some that hold wonderful memories for you. John Grisoni, an oil painter who specializes in landscapes and still lifes. John has shown his work throughout the region and has won several awards at juried shows. He is particularly fond of scenes in our own Hudson River Valley. All paintings are framed and ready to be hung. There are varied sizes from small, medium, and large to suit any taste and decor. Many would make the unique Christmas gift of an original artwork. A portion of each sale goes to St. Gabriel parish. Feel free to contact John Grisoni at [email protected] for further information.
