ST. GABRIEL THE ARCHANGEL PARISH BULLETIN October 25, 2015

Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Through his miracle, Jesus makes Bartimaeus a living sign of what he is doing in the name of his Father – healing

the world’s blindness, leading the human family to see in him the truth of God’s ways.

God’s grace has prepared the blind man. He is ready to take the risk. He left a place he knew well and went to

Jesus, a person whom he had only heard of. He left his cloak which may have been all he had. As he works the

miracle for him, Jesus commends his ‘faith’. ‘Faith’ has a very concrete meaning when it is referred to by Jesus.

The ‘faith’ Jesus frequently speaks of as he works a miracle is a blessed openness that recognizes in his coming,

his works, and even in his suffering and death that the Father’s generous plan for us is being realized. In contrast

to those around Jesus, Bartimaeus has this openness. He is the first person in the gospel accounts to address Jesus

publicly with the messianic title, ‘Son of David’. He throws off his cloak and hurries forward to ask for the miracle

that had been promised as a sign of the messiah of Israel’s hopes. His readiness is instantly rewarded, and he joins

the company of Jesus’ disciples.

For old Israel, God was known through the ‘great things’ God had done for Israel. God had a plan that was

unfolding through the history of the chosen people. The reading from the prophet Jeremiah gives us a glimpse of

the startling confidence of old Israel’s faith. Jeremiah assures them of a future filled with blessings – ‘Shout with

joy… Proclaim! Praise! Shout! The Lord has saved his people’. If they ‘left in tears’ for the trials of life in a foreign

land, their return will be like a new Exodus, the whole company – the strong and the weak – will be led back, as

God shows himself to be their loving ‘Father’.

Faith is both gift and a call. Given at baptism when we are young, it can grow during life if it is well tended. As

the blind man recognized Jesus and immediately followed him, so too are we called to recognize Christ present

amongst us today in the poor, the needy and most vulnerable in our midst and to ‘see’ the new spiritual, social,

and material realities God makes possible through our faithful acts of discipleship.

In the Peace and Love of Our Risen Lord!

Father John Michele Bergeron

Holy Land Gifts - Olive Wood Carvings

Available This Weekend Saida & George Rashmawi will have some beautiful

Olive Wood carvings which are all handmade by the

Christian people in Bethlehem, for sale after all the

Masses this weekend. The sale of these items helps to

maintain the existence of the Catholic people in the

Holy Land. Catholic Christians were once the

majority in that land but the percentage has shrunk to

less than 1.5%. These carvings make great

sacramental and Christmas gifts that have an added

special significance given where and why they were

made.

Purificators are small pieces of white linen,

marked with a cross in the center, used by the

priest in the celebration of Mass. It is folded in

three layers and used by the priest to purify his

fingers and the chalice and paten after Holy

Communion and by the Eucharistic Ministers to wipe

the lip of the cup as the precious Blood is served to

recipients. As you can guess, they are easily stained

and periodically have to be replaced. This week 30

purificators were donated in memory of

Leanidous C. Washington, Jr. What a wonderful

way to remember him! This gift also helps us to

avoid an outlay of funds to purchase these items.

That’s good news!

If you have Good News you would like to share with

the parish, please email it to stgabriel@archdiocese-

no.org and put Good News in the subject line.

Pictorial Directories Thank you for turning out for our parish directory; it

should be useful for people to get to know each

other. However, please direct any questions or concerns about the format or printing errors to Life Touch or its

agents directly since the parish office was not involved in

the editing process. (504) 469-0044.

The directories are available in the parish office or after

masses this weekend. One book is available for each family group whose picture was taken by Life Touch.

Once these books are distributed, any remaining books

will be available for purchase at $10 each.

WORLD MISSIONS Thanks for your generosity in last weekend’s collection

for the World Missions. Your World Mission Sunday gift

may be used to buy Bibles for catechists in Sierra Leone, or provide for a small parish in India. Most importantly,

wherever your offering is sent, it brings with it the Good

News of Jesus Christ and His message of peace, hope and

salvation.

Books for Advent/Christmas

We will have the book, Give Us This Day for your

prayer and reflection during the seasons of Advent

and Christmas. The book has the mass texts,

especially the Scripture readings, for each day, as

well as daily reflections/meditations on the Scripture.

Give Us This Day also has morning and evening

prayer for each day and an article on the saint for the

day. The book will be sold for $2.00 each. You can

sign up this weekend to order the book and also to

make your payment. This will help us to ensure

timely receipt for the beginning of Advent. Don’t

forget about friends and relatives who may want a

copy!

David Rosas is a Notre Dame seminarian who will be

spending some time with us helping to ensure the history

of St. Gabriel is not lost by conducting interviews with

parishioners, especially the older members of our faith

community. This type of oral history is very important

because it gives the color, the background, the

understanding of what the Church was like through the

eyes of its members. If you would like to participate,

please contact the parish office at (504) 282-0296.

This Sunday has been designated by the bishops of the United States as the national annual celebration of World

Youth Day. There will be nine kids and chaperones attending from St. Gabriel. During this weekend, let us remember the youth of our parish and our archdiocese and the gifts they bring to the Church. Let us pray for them and ask God’s blessing on them.
