Greetings St. George Community, The Festival Committee has been working since last October to execute and plan our 60th Festival. It should come as no surprise that given the state of current affairs, we will not be able to produce (nor could we be sure people would attend) one of the largest parties of the year. So, it was decided at the last Festival Meeting that we will instead be promoting - The 60th Food Festival - TO GO! We will be doing drive though meals from August 25-29 and we are going to need some help. We are needing volunteers to work in some key planning areas to get the logistics done to raise funds for St. George while keep-ing our volunteers, our customers and our community safe. Please volunteer for one of the following task-forces: 1. Customer and Collections Logistics 2. Cooking Logistics 3. Serving Logistics 4. Support and Sanitation Logistics Please email to me at [email protected] and we will get you put on a team and we can be off and running. It is our sincere hope that with some hard work and creativity we can get though this challenging year and set ourselves up for a fantastic and huge 61st Festival in 2021! Thank you, Peter Vallis & The Festival Committee

Orthros Gospel– Luke 24: 1– 12 On the first day of the week, at early dawn, the women went to the tomb, taking the spices which they had prepared. And they found the stone rolled away from the tomb, but when they went in they did not find the body. While they were per-plexed about this, behold, two men stood by them in dazzling apparel; and as they were frightened and bowed their faces to the ground, the men said to them, "Why do you seek the living among the dead? Remember how he told you, while he was still in Galilee, that the Son of man must be delivered in to the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and on the third day rise." And they remembered his words, and returning from the tomb they told all this to the eleven and to all the rest. Now it was Mary Magdalene, and Joanna and Mary the mother of James and the other women with them who told this to the apostles; but these words seemed to them an idle tale, and they did not believe them.

But Peter rose and ran to the tomb; stooping and looking in, he saw the linen cloths by themselves; and he went home won-dering at what had happened.

Galatians 5: 22– 26; 6:1– 2 Brethren, the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such there is no law. And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit. Let us have no self-conceit, no provoking of one another, no envy of one an-other. Brethren, if a man is overtaken in any trespass, you who are spiritual should restore him in a spirit of gentleness. Look to yourself, lest you too be tempted. Bear one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.

Matthew 8: 5– 13 At that time, as Jesus entered Capernaum, a centurion came forward to him, beseeching him and saying, "Lord, my servant is lying paralyzed at home, in terrible distress." And he said to him, "I will come and heal him." But the centurion answered him, "Lord, I am not worthy to have you come under my roof; but only say the word, and my servant will be healed. For I am a man under authority, with soldiers under me; and I say to one, 'Go,' and he goes, and to another, 'Come,' and he comes, and to my slave, 'Do this,' and he does it." When Jesus heard him, he marveled, and said to those who followed him, "Truly, I say to you, not even in Israel have I found such faith. I tell you, many will come from east and west and sit at table with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven, while the sons of the kingdom will be thrown into the outer darkness; there men will weep and gnash their teeth." And to the centurion Jesus said, "Go; be it done for you as you have believed." And the servant was healed at that very moment.

Epistle & Gospel Reading

Let all things above in heaven rejoice, and let all things below on earth be glad. With all the might and strength of His arm an eternal deed the Lord did perform. Beneath His feet He has trampled down death by death, and first born of the dead has He become. From the womb of Hades has He delivered us, and to all the world has granted His great redeeming mercy. Angelic hosts on high were filled with wonderment, seeing your life in the flesh: how with your body you courageously went out to wrestle with invisible foes; and to the demonic hordes you inflicted serious wounds. Therefore, Athanasios, you re-ceived from the Master Christ, a wealth of gifts. Holy Father, intercede on our behalf with Christ our God, to save our souls. As the one renowned for setting captives free and for defending those in poverty, the physician of the sick and the cham-pion of emperors, great and victorious Martyr George, interceded with Christ our God, beseeching Him to save our souls. A protection of Christians unshamable, Intercessor to our Holy Maker, unwavering, reject not the prayerful cries of those who are in sin. Instead, come to us, for you are good; Your loving help bring unto us, who are crying in faith to you, Has-ten to intercede and speed now to supplicate, as a protection for all time, Theotokos, for those who honor you.

Summer Series: “Couples’ Communication”: Let’s talk about it! Introducing a new ministry for Orthodox Young Married Couples with the collaboration of the Metropolis Family Wellness Ministry and the Office of Youth & Young Adult Ministries. Join us for an open forum for young married couples to gain insight and helpful tools that will cultivate “wellness” in their marriages and family life. We will meet once a month this summer during June, July and August, and then we'll offer our amazing book series this fall. It is open to engaged couples as well, especially as they are going through their marriage enrichment classes. This summer series will be offered once a month on Thursdays, July 16, and August 20, 2020 at 6:30pm PST on zoom. George Papageorge MFT, Director of Family Wellness Ministry will share insights from his 30 years of coun-seling couples. Johanna Duterte Carter, Director of Youth & Young Adult Ministries, will help facilitate our discussions. All together, we will connect, interact, and learn practical principles for healthy communication and conflict resolution. We will discuss relevant topics such as… What role does “self awareness” play in talking skills? What role does “empathy” play in listening skills? What communication tool box did I inherit from my family of origin? The vital role of having “differences”. Dispelling the myth that good marriages are conflict free. This past year we have continued to developed and began implementing Vision 100, part of

our Strategic Plan. In the coming year we will continue implementing this plan to grow

our church and its ministries. Copies of Vision 100 are available in the Narthex and on our

website at: http://stgeorgefresno.org/st.-george-strategic-plan.

We invite you to be part of this vision by becoming a Financial Steward of St. George

Church. By becoming a Financial Steward of St. George Church, you will insure the suc-

cess of the many current and future ministries we provide.

Become a Financial Steward of St. George Church:

Fill out a confidential 2020 Stewardship Commitment Form* and return it to the church

office.

*Commitment forms are located in the monthly newsletter.

Fulfill your stewardship commitment in numerous ways:

Setup automatic monthly payments from your bank to the church. (Mailing Address:

2219 N. Orchard St.; Fresno, CA 93703)

Make a one time Stewardship payment or setup automatic monthly payments with your

credit card through the church website: http://www.stgeorgefresno.org/giving/treasure

Mail monthly, quarterly, semi-annual or annual stewardship checks to the church office.

(Mailing Address: 2219 N. Orchard St.; Fresno, CA 93703)

Place monthly, quarterly, semi-annual or annual stewardship checks in the Sunday of-

fering tray.– (Once church reopens to in person attendance.)

As highlighted in our annual budget, if the families that were Financial Stewards last year

increased the average commitment to $2,200 per family per year, we would fulfill the finan-

cial obligations of our church and let fundraisers fund improvements and growth.
