GATHERING IN GOD’S NAME Entrance hymn

ake up thy cross, the Saviour said, if thou wouldst my disciple be;

deny thyself, the world forsake, and humbly follow after me.

Take up thy cross: let not its weight fill thy weak spirit with alarm; his strength shall bear thy spirit up, and brace thy heart, and nerve thine arm.

Take up thy cross, nor heed the shame, nor let thy foolish pride rebel: thy Lord for thee the cross endured, and save thy soul from death and hell.

Take up thy cross then in his strength, and calmly every danger brave; ’twill guide thee to a better home, and lead to victory o’er the grave.

Take up thy cross, and follow Christ, nor think till death to lay it down; for only those who bear the cross may hope to wear the glorious crown.

To thee, great Lord, the One in Three, all praise forevermore ascend: O grant us in our home to see the heavenly life that knows no end.

TEXT: Charles William Everest (1814–77); MUSIC: ‘Breslau’, German traditional melody.

Collect for the Third Sunday after Pentecost Let us pray.

We pray in silence.

RACIOUS GOD, we who were baptised into Christ Jesus were baptised into his death: we pray that, as you raised him from death, so by the power of the Holy Spirit we may live the new life to your glory, knowing

ourselves to be dead in sin but alive for you in Jesus Christ; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD Old Testament

A reading from the Book Genesis.

he child grew, and was weaned; and Abraham made a great feast on the day that Isaac was weaned. But Sarah saw the son of Hagar the Egyptian, whom

she had borne to Abraham, playing with her son Isaac. So she said to Abraham, ‘Cast out this slave woman with her son; for the son of this slave woman shall not inherit along with my son Isaac’. The matter was very distressing to Abra-ham on account of his son. But God said to Abraham, ‘Do not be distressed because of the boy and because of your slave woman; whatever Sarah says to you, do as she tells you, for it is through Isaac that offspring shall be named after you. As for the son of the slave woman, I will make a nation of him also, because he is your offspring.’ So Abraham rose early in the morning, and took bread and a skin of water, and gave it to Hagar, putting it on her shoulder, along with the child, and sent her away. And she departed, and wandered about in the wilder-ness of Beer-sheba.

When the water in the skin was gone, she cast the child under one of the bushes. Then she went and sat down opposite him a good way off, about the distance of a bowshot; for she said, ‘Do not let me look on the death of the child’. And as she sat opposite him, she lifted up her voice and wept. And God heard the voice of the boy; and the angel of God called to Hagar from heaven, and said to her, ‘What troubles you, Hagar? Do not be afraid; for God has heard the voice of the boy where he is. Come, lift up the boy and hold him fast with your hand, for I will make a great nation of him.’ Then God opened her eyes, and she saw a well of water. She went, and filled the skin with water, and gave the boy a drink.

Genesis 21·8–21

Hear the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Psalm ow down thine ear, O Lord, and hear me :

for I am poor, and in misery. Preserve thou my soul, for I am holy :

my God, save thy servant that putteth his trust in thee. Be merciful unto me, O Lord :

for I will call daily upon thee. Comfort the soul of thy servant :

for unto thee, O Lord, do I lift up my soul. For thou, Lord, art good and gracious :

and of great mercy unto all them that call upon thee. Give ear, Lord, unto my prayer :

and ponder the voice of my humble desires. In the time of my trouble I will call upon thee :

for thou hearest me. Among the gods there is none like unto thee, O Lord :

there is not one that can do as thou doest. TEXT: Psalm 86·1–8, Inclina, Domine;

Epistle A reading from the Letter of Paul to the Romans.

hat then are we to say? Should we continue in sin in order that grace may abound? By no means! How can we who died to sin go on living in it? Do

you not know that all of us who have been baptised into Christ Jesus were bap-tised into his death? Therefore we have been buried with him by baptism into death, so that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life.

For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we will certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his. We know that our old self was cruci-fied with him so that the body of sin might be destroyed, and we might no longer be enslaved to sin. For whoever has died is freed from sin. But if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. We know that Christ,

being raised from the dead, will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him. The death he died, he died to sin, once for all; but the life he lives, he lives to God. So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.

Gradual hymn

y God, accept my heart this day, and make it always thine,

that I from thee no more may stray, no more from thee decline.

2.Before the cross of him who died, behold, I prostrate fall; let every sin be crucified, let Christ be all in all.

3.Anoint me with thy heavenly grace, and seal me for thine own; that I may see thy glorious face, and worship near thy throne.

4.Let every thought, and work & word to thee be ever given: Then life shall be thy service, Lord, and death the gate of heaven.

5.All glory to the Father be, all glory to the Son, all glory, Holy Ghost, to thee, while endless ages run.

ESUS SAID, ‘A disciple is not above the teacher, nor a slave above the master; it is enough for the disciple to be like the teacher, and the slave like the master. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebul, how much more will

‘So have no fear of them; for nothing is covered up that will not be uncovered, and nothing secret that will not become known. What I say to you in the dark, tell in the light; and what you hear whispered, proclaim from the housetops. Do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul; rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell. Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground unperceived by your Father. And even the hairs of your head are all counted. So do not be afraid; you are of more value than many sparrows.

‘Everyone therefore who acknowledges me before others, I also will acknowledge before my Father in heaven; but whoever denies me before others, I also will deny before my Father in heaven.

‘Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth; I have not come to bring peace, but a sword.

For I have come to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law; and one’s foes will be members of one’s own household.

Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me; and whoever does not take up the cross and follow me is not worthy of me. Those who find their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake will find it.’

Matthew 10·24–39

This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

Sermon Given by the Very Reverend Chris Chataway, the Dean.

Nicene Creed Let us together affirm the faith of the Church.

E BELIEVE IN ONE GOD, the Father, the almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of

the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Prayers of the people We pray for God’s grace.

Lord, in your mercy: hear our prayer.

Lord God, through your grace we are your people: through your Son you have redeemed us; in your Spirit you have made us as your own. We pray for Kay our Archbishop and for bishops Jeremy and Kate, for Bishop Christopher of our partner diocese of Eldoret, in Kenya, for Archbishop Geoffrey of Adelaide, Primate of Australia, and for Archbishop Justin of Canterbury. We pray for this Cathedral Church, for the Dean and all who work and worship here, especially for the safety, swiftness and satisfaction of building work in the Cathedral. Make our hearts respond to your love.

Lord, in your mercy: hear our prayer.

We pray for mercy upon our world as we respond to the challenges of a global pandemic, giving thanks for healthcare workers, and praying for those places worst affected by disease. We pray for the lonely, the bereaved, the sick and the dying, especially for [those who are named], and all who are on our hearts this morning. Make our lives bear witness to your glory in the world.

Lord, in your mercy: hear our prayer.

We pray for fresh hope for those who are unemployed or underemployed, and for their dependants, as Western Australia records the highest unemployment rate in the country. We pray for safety and protection for those who sleep rough on our city’s streets through the rain and cold of mid-winter. Make our wills eager to obey, and our hands ready to heal.

Lord, in your mercy: hear our prayer.

We give thanks for all whom we remember before you, especially [those who are named]. Make our voices one with all your people in heaven and on earth.

Almighty God, you have promised to hear our prayers. Grant that what we have asked in faith we may by your grace receive, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

THE MINISTRY OF THE SACRAMENT Greeting of peace

We are the body of Christ. His Spirit is with us.

The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you.

Offertory hymn

e still, my soul: the Lord is on your side; bear patiently the cross of grief or pain;

leave to your God to order and provide; in every change he faithful will remain. Be still, my soul: your best, your heavenly friend through thorny ways leads to a joyful end.

Be still, my soul: your God will undertake to guide the future as he has the past. Your hope, your confidence let nothing shake, all now mysterious shall be bright at last. Be still, my soul: the waves and winds still know his voice, who ruled them while he dwelt below.

Be still, my soul: when dearest friends depart and all is darkened in the vale of tears, then you shall better know his love, his heart, who comes to soothe your sorrow, calm your fears. Be still, my soul: for Jesus can repay from his own fullness all he takes away.

Be still, my soul: the hour is hastening on when we shall be for ever with the Lord, when disappointment, grief and fear are gone, sorrow forgotten, love’s pure joy restored. Be still, my soul: when change and tears are past, all safe and blessèd we shall meet at last.

The Great Thanksgiving The Lord be with you.

And also with you. Lift up your hearts.

We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

It is right to give our thanks and praise.

LL GLORY AND HONOUR, be yours always and everywhere, mighty Creator, everliving God.

We give you thanks and praise for our Saviour Jesus Christ, who by the power of your Spirit was born of Mary and lived as one of us.

By his death on the cross and rising to new life, he offered the one true sacrifice for sin and obtained an eternal deliverance for his people.

Therefore with angels and archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we proclaim your great and glorious name, for ever praising you and saying:

ERCIFUL GOD, we thank you for these gifts of your creation, this bread and wine,

and we pray that by your Word and Holy Spirit, we who eat and drink them may be partakers of Christ’s body and blood.

On the night he was betrayed Jesus took bread; and when he had given you thanks he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying,

‘Take, eat. This is my body given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.’

After supper, he took the cup, and again giving thanks he gave it to his disciples, saying,

‘Drink from this, all of you. This is my blood of the new covenant shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.’

Therefore we do as our Saviour has commanded: proclaiming his offering of himself made once for all upon the cross, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension, and looking for his coming again, we celebrate, with this bread and this cup, his one perfect and sufficient sacrifice for the sins of the whole world.
