The Noble Army of Counters

New helpers needed for the weekly after-service offering count and deposit. Counters generally commit to one month of Sundays with a partner and then take several months off (this is flexible). Calculators provided! Please contact Elizabeth Haigh for more information (902-455-3010).

Join the Altar Guild

The Altar Guild is looking for 2 or 3 new members. You would work as part of a team to prepare the church for Sunday services. Duties include polishing brass, arranging flowers when appropriate, and laying out vestments. No experience necessary. The time commitment is about an hour and a half every 6 weeks. If interested, please speak to Tracy Lenfesty or the Rector.

Junior Choir awarded Gold in Kiwanis! Adjudicator Monique Richard praised the choir for its disciplined and well-prepared performance of 'We will sing for joy' by Domenico Scarlatti and 'En Prière' by Gabriel Fauré. Ms Richard was evidently impressed that a choir ranging 6-12yrs of age could produce such a well-blended tone. The children were also congratulated for their excellent stage deportment.

Many thanks to parents, family and parishioners for coming out to support the children. After their performance, the children and their fans went out for a well-deserved treat of gelato!

Time to mark Sunday, June 7 at 3pm in your calendars! The Junior Choir will present its jazz musical, 'A Technicolor Promise', a delightful dramatization of Noah's Ark.

We give thanks to God for Garth MacPhee's extraordinary love and dedication to the children of our parish. Glory to God!

Hope Blooms Greenhouse Grand Opening Join Hope Blooms for the launch of their brand new off-the-grid greenhouse on Friday, May 1, at 4pm in Murray Warrington Park on the corner of Brunswick Street and Divas Lane. You’ll be able to tour the gardens and greenhouse and enjoy live music and a BBQ.

Many of the children who participate in Hope Blooms are also well-loved YouthNet kids. A partnership between the two organizations has just begun. Please plan to attend this event and support the wonderful ways that community is being built in our neighbourhood!

Vacancy for the position of Sexton The parish is once again in urgent need of a Sexton or pair of Sextons. From General Synod: The 22 Days Campaign Canada’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission, which has addressed the sad legacy of the Indian Residential Schools, will hold the closing ceremonies of its seven-year tenure in Ottawa for four days, commencing on Sunday, May 31st.

General Synod is calling us to 22 days of prayer and renewal in our commitments to healing and reconciliation among all people – the Indigenous Peoples of this land and all others who have come and settled and also call it home. These 22 days will take us to the National Aboriginal Day of Prayer, on Sunday, June 21st. How can you participate?

• Listen to the story of a survivor of Residential Schools (Many stories available at 22days.ca), and pray for those affected by the long shadows of Residential Schools

• Ring church bells for the murdered and missing indigenous women and girls (1017 murdered and 105 missing between 1980 and 2012).

• Consider our commitment as a church to stand in solidarity with Indigenous peoples in their cry for justice.

• Post your own stories of learning and witness to the call to renewed relations with the First Peoples of this land. (Can be posted to 22days.ca).

4 Min 3 Seconds for Mission: Halifax Humanities 101 This morning's 4 minutes and 33 seconds for mission features Mary Lu Redden, director of Halifax Humanities 101. In 2003, a number of Halifax-based community advocates formed the Saint George’s Friends of Clemente Society, a non-profit organization dedicated to enriching the lives of those living in material poverty, through education in the Humanities. In October 2005, the Society, by then a registered charitable organization, launched an eight-month pilot project called Halifax Humanities 101 based on a hugely successful educational model called the Clemente Course in the Humanities. Developed and first delivered on the lower east side of Manhattan in 1995 by writer and educator Earl Shorris, the course in the Humanities is a proven way to radically and successfully enrich the lives of those in poverty through education. The course material teaches reflection and critical thinking, enabling those on low incomes to combat isolation and to navigate their way through poverty to actively participate in changing their lives. A book of essays celebrating the tenth anniversary of HH101 will be launched at the end of May, including essays by many familiar St George's names. Many thanks to Mary Lu for sharing with us today. Please speak with her at coffee hour for more information.

Meghan Jamieson speaks on Christian Education 1-3pm, May 2nd and 16th at St George’s

All are welcome to attend two talks about Anglican teacher and educational theorist Charlotte Mason.

Charlotte Mason was a British educator in the late 19th and early 20th century who believed that the fundamental principles of education in all subjects should be based on a Christian understanding of what it is to be human, and that education is “the science of relations”. Though today she has largely been forgotten by mainstream culture, at one time many schools used her methods. She founded a teacher's training school, and there was a magazine and group, the Parents' National Education Union, that promoted and distributed her ideas and which provided programs for parents teaching children at home.

In these discussions we will have an overview of her guiding ideas and how she implemented them in her Cont’d →

classrooms, and we will consider what they can offer us today with regard to educating children in our Sunday school, in our homes, and in schools.

"By degrees children get that knowledge of God which is the object of the final daily prayer in our own beautiful liturgy - the prayer of St Chrysostom - 'Grant us in this world knowledge of Thy truth,' and all other knowledge which they obtain gathers round and illuminates this" - Charlotte Mason

YouthNet Update for April 2015 YouthNet welcomes in the spring with excitement and high spirits! Starting in May our after-school program will be collaborating with Jessie Jollymore from Hope Blooms. Jessie will participate in bi-weekly programming, providing youth with fun and interactive nutrition, cooking, and gardening activities.

The Dal-Kings Swim Society has been a fixture throughout the year, providing swimming lessons for all ages every Tuesday at Centennial Pool. Most recently members of the Teen Program have started lessons preparing them for lifeguard training later this year. Participants have shown amazing growth and determination in their swimming abilities in such a short time.

The teen program has placed an emphasis on leadership activities, which includes connecting with the after-school program. Each month the teens plan and participate in a special day for the younger youth, which has allowed the two programs to form a closer bond. We are especially looking forward to collaborating with the teens for our Spring Talent Show on May 22nd!

With the help of our dedicated providers and volunteers, our lunch program continues to be a steady fixture at Joseph Howe School. Their ongoing generosity and support is greatly appreciated!

With summer camps quickly approaching, YouthNet is seeking volunteers to assist with day camps, lunches, and transportation. Please contact one of the YouthNet staff if you are interested in getting involved!

Best regards, Ben Trenaman
