This course equips you with the technical expertise and care skills needed to plan and deliver radiotherapy to patients with cancer. You will learn how to use technology to target tumours with millimetre accuracy. Delivering the maximum dose with minimum impact on healthy tissue.

On clinical placement we are assimilated into a working radiography team and welcomed into the lives of patients as they embark on their cancer journey. We are also trusted to perform some of the procedures usually undertaken by qualified radiographers; a daunting experience in prospect, but when a patient thanks you personally at the end of their treatment, you know you have helped make a real difference to their lives; by far the best feeling ever.

Careers advice is embedded into our teaching

Teaching methods include lectures, seminars, peer-assisted learning, case-based learning, simulated practical experience and clinical experience. Facilities include the Virtual Environment for Radiotherapy Training (VERT) and an interactive treatment planning system; both of which are used throughout the course to support learning and enhance practical skills.

VERT creates a three-dimensional treatment suite and offers an interactive function that hones the psychomotor skills required to deliver radiotherapy with pinpoint accuracy.

Our teaching draws on the wealth of experience represented by our professional contacts and alumni, who influence the design of our courses and deliver master classes and workshops that enrich your learning.

Clinical placements provide an opportunity to put theory into practice and consolidate learning experiences.

In year one you participate in our interprofessional education programme, are introduced to the biomedical basics underpinning health science and receive specialist training in oncology and cancer care.

Years two and three comprise a combination of academic modules and clinical placements. The majority of the academic component is delivered at Kingston University and focuses on a discipline-specific programme that covers basic biological and physical sciences along with oncology, radiobiology and radiotherapy practice.

Clinical placements in years two and three will see you acquire a broad experience in the preparation and treatment of patients with cancer, clinical reasoning and the evaluation of practice.

A combination of academic coursework (including essays, reports and presentations), written and practical examinations, clinical assessments and a research dissertation are used to assess your progress.

Therapeutic radiography offers a range of career pathways, including clinical specialisation, management, teaching and research. You might also choose to study at postgraduate certificate, diploma and masters level for radiography qualifications and clinical specialism here at St George’s.

On graduation you will be eligible for registration with the Health and Care Professions Council and membership of the Society of Radiographers.

Entry requirementsIf you meet the minimum requirements set out below, you will be called for interview. With the exception of GCSEs, all qualifications must be completed within a five-year period including year of application.
