The Insistent Voice On Sunday last, we kept the Feast of All Saints’ Day and many of us took part in the Service celebrating the Ministries of Bishop Robert and Pauline to us all. The Service was quite beautiful; sublime music and singing, meaningful prayers, a lovely interpretation of the Eucharist and a tangible, powerful sense of love. It was a moving and God-centred act of worship in the very best tradition. Exactly what one should experience in a Cathedral. We, who simply took part in the Service, should give thanks for the behind-the-scenes team who, in addition to their ordinary tasks, worked physically and mentally long and hard to ensure that everything went so well.

November is a month of events; All Saints, All Souls, Remembrance, the Feast of Christ the King, plus many lesser festivals and commemorations. November is also the last month of the Church’s year – Sunday November 27th being the First Sunday of Advent – the Church’s New Year’s Day. So we look back over the past year with its lights and shades, joys and sorrows. We look forward also to beginning again with its clean slate and its fresh opportunities to serve Christ and those amongst whom we live. The litmus paper or acid test is the question, “Is THIS what the Holy Spirit wants of me?” We must all constantly be aware of the voice, the insistent voice, of the Holy Spirit who is eager to direct us into the right ‘way’. To determine the Will of the Holy Spirit is seldom easy. To ignore Him is to live with the feeling that, no matter how good something is, it is not quite ‘right’, there is a flaw in what we are doing. To do the Will of the Holy Spirit is to feel ‘comfortable’ with some course of action. So we prepare to enter the new Church year with hearts and minds ready to hear and act on the instructions – the Will of the Holy Spirit – never forgetting that God the Father will never load us with a burden which we cannot bear. God can see the whole vast picture, while we can only see a detail of the canvas.

Sunday 30th October, All Saint’s Day saw a full Cathedral for the farewell service for Bishop Robert and Pauline Paterson.

The service was attended by Dean and Chapter, Deputy Registrar, Diocesan Clergy and Readers, Wardens, Tynwald members and congregations of the island’s parish churches. There was a also a strong show of ecumenism, with leaders, brothers and sisters from the other island Christian churches also taking part in the formal processions. Certainly the strongest of Bishop Robert’s legacies to the island has been the unity he established between the Christian denominations, the future of which will be carried forward by CAiM (Churches Alive in Mann).

Alongside Bishop Robert, we welcomed Bishop Geoff, the Bishop of Lancaster who received the care of the Diocese during the interregnum.

The service started in the ancient Cathedral and Bishop Robert led a procession through the town to St German’s Cathedral, where he took his place in the great cathedra for the last time.

The full cathedral choir were in attendance and sang music selected for the service by Bishop Robert, this included Rutter’s Te Deum , Haydn’s Little Organ Mass, and Tallis’ If Ye Love Me amongst other rousing hymns and organ music.

Bishop Robert preached and then presided at the Eucharist before giving his final blessing and handing over care of the Diocese, and his crozier to the Dean and Archdeacon.

For many, the most moving moment of the service was at the end with Bishop Robert kneeling in prayer at the altar, whilst the choir sang the haunting Manx vesper hymn ‘Now the boats are outward sailing’ .

We give thanks for the ministry of Bishop Robert across the last eight years, and we wish him and Pauline well for the future.

Scientists in Congregations scheme

The Archbishop of York has presented awards to representatives of eight projects which are part of the Scientists in Congregations Scheme at an event at Bishopthorpe Palace. This was part of the “Equipping Christian Religious Leaders in an Age of Science” project run by Durham University in partnership with the Church of England. The eight projects have received funding for up to £10,000 in the first round of the scheme, aimed at helping churchgoers engage confidently with science, raising the profile of Christians whose vocation is science-related, and changing the debate about science and faith in churches and communities. The Archbishop of York said, “Awe and wonder are at the heart of both religion and science. I am delighted that this event will recognise those who have done so much to see our universe with different eyes. As we gaze upwards and outwards we come to see more fully our place in this extraordinary created order and we see more deeply into the heart of our Creator God.” The Rev Dr Kathryn Pritchard, Scientists in Congregations project leader, said: “We have been delighted with the calibre and variety of bids for this first phase of Scientists in Congregations. There is clearly an eagerness to help congregations of all shapes and sizes engage more confidently and joyously with science, with the insights that emerge from cutting edge scientific research, and with scientists and their work. These projects are each contributing, in small increments, to a shift in the mood of the faith-science conversation in this country which is fantastic.” The projects represented at Bishopthorpe included: 1, Take your vicar to the lab—St Alban’s Diocese 2, From Dinosaurs to DNA—Ely Cathedral science festival 3, Church Scientific, Leeds 4, Confident Christian Engagement with Science—St John’s, Lindow, Cheshire 5, Crossing the Gap—benefice of St Matthew’s, Harwell and All Saints’, Chilton, Oxfordshire 6, Grace Church Truro, (part of the New Frontiers Network) 7, Science, Bible Reading Fellowship 8, Cathedral, Isle of Man The Project at Cathedral Isle of Man will use church discussion groups led by scientists to produce a series of booklets for young people offering a tour of the cathedral gardens from a variety of science and faith perspectives. During Advent, Nigel will be leading us for the four Wednesday evenings, 30th November, 7th,14th and 21st December at 7.30pm in the Deanery and we hope many people will come along, even to attend just one meeting.

The 1st September was declared a day of prayer for the Care of Creation and the Church of England has taken up this theme as ‘Creationtide’. Nigel will develop this theme, especially focusing first on geology and our status here in the Isle of Man and progressing to the idea of how to become an eco Church, and how to involve young people in this.

At our October meeting, we had a very interesting evening when we all shared our favourite Bible passages. Here are some of them:-

1 John 4:16 God is love: and he who dwells in love dwells in God, and God in him. 1 Corinthians 13: Though I speak with tongues of men and of angels and have not love, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal. And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith so that I could remove mountains, and have not love, I am nothing. …. .Love suffereth long and is kind; love envieth not; love vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil; rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth; beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things. Love never fails……. And now abideth faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love. 1 John 3:1 How great is the love the Father has lavished on us , that we should be called children of God! Psalm 40: 1-3 I waited patiently for the Lord; he turned to me and heard my cry. He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; he set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand. He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see and fear and put their trust in the Lord. Several people chose Psalm 46…with interesting stories about these words:-

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea; though the waters thereof roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with the swelling thereof.

Connect Group– More favourite Bible passages

Romans 5:1-5 Therefore since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we rejoice in the hope of the glory of God. Not only so, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us. Isaiah 11:6-9 The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid; and the calf and the young lion and the fatling together; and a little child shall lead them. And the cow and the bear shall feed; their young ones shall lie down together: and the lion shall eat straw like the ox. And the suckling child shall play on the hole of the asp, and the weaned child shall put his hand in the cockatrice’ den. They shall not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain: for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord, as the waters cover the sea. Romans 8:28 And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. Ephesians 2: 8 -10 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith – and this not of yourselves, it is the gift of God – not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

St John 10 : 11, 27-28 I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd gives his life for the sheep. My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: and I give unto them eternal life and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. My Father, which gave them to me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father’s hand.

Next meeting: 10th November, 7pm, Deanery All are welcome to a Bring and Share supper and then a Bible study in the “lectio divina” style.
