THE NATIVITY OF SAINT JOHN THE BAPTIST

LOOKING AHEAD

LIVING THE PASCHAL MYSTERY

The natural cycle of life involves both birth and death. Moments of joy, love, hope, and sheer happiness accompany the birth of a child. We wonder what she will do, what choices she will make, what her personality will be, etc. This entire future life is pure potential and opportunity in a newborn. And at the conclusion of one’s life, we reflect back on what this person has become, the relationships and choices that made him who he was. We often look to the children and grandchildren, if the person was so blessed, and are in some way comforted to know that something of the deceased lives on in his posterity.

Churches are often the points at which significant life moments are ritualized, like baptism, marriage or a funeral. Our faith can be nourished by such events, but also by the daily activities of life.

For Elizabeth and Mary, too, their faith was nourished by the joys of a newborn with all the hope and promise that brought. On this day we recognize how fundamentally human our relationship with God is. Through the sacred of a birth, which we ultimately know leads to death, hope springs eternal and we live again the paschal mystery.

LIVE THE LITURGY - WEEKLY INSPIRATION

As we celebrate today's feast, we are reminded that God creates and fashions each one of us with intent and purpose. We are not random accidents. We are special creations and wonderfully made. Each of us brings a unique twist to the one shot at life that we are given. As people of faith and children of God, we are asked to use our specialness to announce God's kingdom. Each of us reveals a unique part of God's face. Each day presents opportunities to communicate our faith to others and to reveal God's mercy. We have the means to point the way to Christ. How can we show Jesus to others today?

♦ PARISH/SCHOOL OFFICE SUMMER HOURS ♦

The Parish Office began summer hours the week of June 11th. The Parish Office will be open Monday thru Thursday from 8:00AM-4:00PM and on Fridays from 8:00AM until Noon. We will be closed Wednesday, July 4th in observance of the Independence Day holiday.

♦ SCHOOL OFFICE SUMMER HOURS ♦

 JUNE: June 12 thru June 29 9:00AM-Noon.

 JULY: School Office closed.

 AUGUST: August 1 thru August 17 9:00AM-Noon.

August 20 resume normal School Office hours

7:30AM-3:45PM.

♦ CHANGE IN DAILY MASS SCHEDULE IN JULY ♦

Because July is the quietest month in Parish life, with School out of session, no meetings scheduled, and many people on vacation, it is an opportunity for priests and musicians to have a little more time to relax. Therefore beginning Monday, July 2nd, and for the remainder of the Mondays and Fridays during July, there will be a Communion Service

without music in Church at 8:15AM. As usual, Daily Mass will be celebrated on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays during July in Church at 8:15AM. For those wishing to attend Mass on Mondays and Fridays, St. John the Evangelist in Greenfield has Mass at 8:00AM. St Matthias has Mass on Fridays at 8:00AM in the Parish Center Chapel.

LOVE NOTES

Praying With Your Spouse, Step Four: Serve Each Other

As your time together draws to a close, remember to go in peace and to serve the Lord in each other. Prayer and intimacy never ends! Let your service and intimacy live on throughout every day, as you go about cooking, cleaning, listening, working, and so on. The fruit that will come from your prayer routine will bless your marriage, deepen your love for God and each other, and allow you to reflect the love relationship between Christ and his beloved spouse, the Church.

EVERYDAY STEWARDSHIP

What power lies in a name? Have you ever met a "David," "Holly," or "Jack" and said, "They don't look like a David, Holly, or Jack"? Sometimes our name actually adds something to our person. Peculiar people sometimes have peculiar names. Some people of tremendous strength have names that we deem strong as well. Sometimes we give nicknames to people because of some attributes they exhibit.

In the Bible, names mean a lot. Saul changes his name to Paul when he converts. Adam means "man," as in the first man. Eve means "to live" or "to breathe." Elizabeth took great care to name her son John as God commanded, even if other family members did not understand why such a unique name not found in their lineage. It was a unique name for a child who had a unique future of preparing the way for the Messiah.

We have our baptismal names, our surnames, our Confirmation names, and our maiden names. But all disciples of Jesus also bear the same name: Christian. People may wonder what does a David, Holly, or Jack really look like, but they should never wonder what a Christian looks like. Unfortunately, too often those who bear this name don't resemble the characteristics embodied in the name. Simply, a Christian looks like Christ. A Christian acts like Christ. A Christian truly is Christ to a world that seeks to uncover the true meaning of his name.
