GETTING AROUND

METRO The metro is the easiest and most convenient way to get around. You can make it across Paris in record time and rarely will have to change lines more than once if your metro does not go directly to the stop desired.

Tickets You have several ticket options: Buy individual tickets Price in

Euros 1 ticket t+ 1,60 If you plan to take only a few rides on the metro, it may make most sense to buy individual tickets. Ask at the ticket window in the station for “un billet”, “deux billets”, etc. Individual tickets cost €1.60

Buy a carnet of 10 tickets Price in

Euros Carnet de 10 tickets t+ 11,60 If you are in Paris from mid-week to mid-week or for longer than a few days and plan to take the metro intermittently, or are several people traveling even for a couple of days, you can buy what is called a “carnet” (pronounced “carnay”) of 10 tickets. Each ticket can be used once by anyone. Ask at the ticket window. A carnet of 10 tickets costs €11.60 Tickets can be purchased either at ticket windows or from self-service machines, which generally offer English language instructions and allow for credit card payments. Warning: Hold onto your tickets until you have exited the metro station at your destination. There are periodic ticket checks and if you cannot produce a valid ticket, you will be fined.

Buy Metro Tickets

You can avoid lines at the Paris Metro stops by taking advantage of the automated ticket machines (If you’ve followed Tip #1). Use your credit card (with its four-digit pin number to buy a ‘carnet’ of tickets – or a set of Ten tickets which can be used at any time (there’s no date limits on these tickets) for either the Metro or buses.

Although the Metro ticket machines may look intimidating at first, use the rollers in the middle with the aid of the Validate key on the Right hand side to switch to an English menu.

From there, just keeping turning the roller to scroll down to the choice of a ‘carnet’ or ‘set of ten’ tickets. For most tourist sites, you’ll be staying within Zones 1 -2. Most of these machines only accept credit cards, but some have been installed that do accept paper money and coins.

Do not confuse the ticket machines with ‘Navigo’ recharging machines which you’ll also find nearby. The ‘Navigo’ card is relatively new. It will gradually phase out the Carte Orange which is a monthly or weekly pass. Navigo cards have an electronic ‘puce’ which allows cardholders to use designated turnstiles. If you take one of these turnstiles by mistake, you won’t be able to get through, so don’t panic, just take one of the turnstiles designated for normal Metro tickets.

You are in the most prolific restaurant area! These are some selection within 3 blocks / 5 min. from the apartment. You can walk to all of them!!! Or you can order and carry out. Be careful, it is not customary in Paris to do take –home / doggy bags if you eat at a restaurant…

In France all prices include service and taxes, with approximately 15% of the price corresponding to the service. However, if the waiter or waitress has been especially attentive, you can leave him or her a tip to show your appreciation. Around 5 to 10% of the bill is usual.

ENTERTAINMENT IN PARIS

Pariscope Pariscope comes out every Wednesday and is very inexpensive. It lists all movies, plays, operas, dance, art shows and museums (with the addresses and phone numbers for each place). Unfortunately it is in French only.

Nightlife L’officiel des spectacles or Pariscope are two great sources for looking up movie times, for finding out what concerts are going on and for searching for shows to watch. Not far away from the apartment along Boulevard Saint Germain is Odéon, a great place to hang out at night or to watch a movie.

Flea Market Puces de Saint Ouen

The daddy of French flea markets, with 2000-3000 vendors, this market is housed in a strange mixture of ramshackle structures and more modern buildings above the Porte de Clignancourt to the north of the city.

Hours: Saturday: 8-9am until 5-6 pm Sunday: 10 am until 5-6 pm Monday: 11 am until 5-6 pm

How to get there: Metro: Porte de Clignancourt, Line 4

Puces de Porte de Montreuil

This market of about 50 vendors on the eastern edge of the city should be reserved mostly for the more intrepid flea market shoppers who don’t mind sorting through a lot of junk in hopes of finding a treasure.

Hours:

Saturday, Sunday and Monday 8 am-6 pm

How to get there: Metro: Porte de Montreuil, Line 9

Porte de Vanves

One of the best markets in all of France, Porte de Vanves may not be as big as the markets at Saint Ouen, there are several hundred vendors here who sell everything from ceramics, to glassware to paintings and prints to Art Deco items to clocks, lamps and books to second hand clothing and even some furniture.

Hours:

Saturday and Sunday mornings until 1 p.m. (get there early!)

How to get there: Metro: Porte Vanves, Line 13

Tips for Shopping the Paris Flea Markets

• If you are a serious bargain hunter or a collector, then arrive at the markets early in the morning, as this is when you will have the best chance at making a great find.

• More casual shoppers who are visiting the markets more to peruse and have a cultural experience should arrive mid-morning when the markets are more lively.

• Keep in mind that lunch time (or any meal time in France) is a treasured time when crowds will thin and many vendors will sit down next to their booths for lunch (which often includes a bottle of wine).

• Carry as little as possible with you, though bring a cloth bag is probably a good idea (I personally like this French market bag).

• Keep your camera at home. Or at least hidden. Carrying a camera with you will label you as a tourist and will often affect the prices of items and your ability to bargain.

• Leave your purse at the hotel. Pickpockets are all over Paris, especially at these busy markets, so carrying cash well secured on your person is probably the best way to avoid this problem.

• Do not leave your suitcase in your car. If you do drive to the markets (though I almost never recommend driving in Paris at all), don’t leave your luggage in the car while you shop. Breaking into cars and stealing the stuff inside is common in France, and a suitcase is an easy target.

• Say “Bonjour” and “Au Revoir” to each vendor if you stop to check out his or her wares.

Page 41: St Guillaume 1 Guide book

St  Guillaume  2  Guide  Book

Paris  Luxury  Rentals   Page  41

• Try to address people in French, at least at first. Even if all you can manage in French is a simple, “parlez-vous anglais?” (do you speak English?) you’d be amazed how far the effort can get you (and may even get you a better price on that antique).

• Don’t be afraid to bargain. Bargaining at these markets is part of the shopping experience and you can generally get a 10%-15% price reduction without much problem. Be polite and use tact and finesse to get an even bigger reduction in the price.

• Take public transportation to the markets. Driving in Paris is just no fun and taking a taxi to the markets from the center of Paris is both slow and expensive. Plus, all three major Paris flea markets and easily accessible by the Metro .

Museum Pass If you plan on visiting two or more museums while in Paris, the Paris Museum Pass really makes sense. (Another option is to buy a One Day Louvre Pass if you’re only going to visit that museum). For years, we waited in lines when a little bit of advance planning could have saved our visitors valuable time to do other things (like lingering over an aperatif in a cafe).

Pick up your Museum Pass at the Visitor’s Center (or at the FNAC bookstore),

The Museum Pass allows you access to many of the major museums including the Louvre, the Rodin Museum and Musee d’Orsay. Just be sure to time your two-day purchase to avoid the days these museums might be closed (Mondays and Tuesdays). Also, kids are allowed free admission to many of these museums so don’t waste money if you don’t have to. You can also buy advance tickets for special temporary exhibits by going to the FNAC bookstore. (Here’s where you can buy tickets not only for museum shows, but concerts and opera as well.)
