PASTOR’S CORNER

A Week of Passion Palm Sunday, also known as Passion Sunday, begins the holiest time of year: the end of the season of Lent, the Sacred

Triduum, and the beginning of the Easter season. In this timeframe we recall Christ’s passion on Palm Sunday and Good Friday, the great gift of Himself in the Blessed Sacrament on Holy Thursday, and His glorious Resurrection on Easter, anticipated with the great Easter Vigil on Saturday night.

Although Holy Thursday and Good Friday are not days of obligation, they are very meaningful and worth taking the time to join in worship (Thursday, 7PM; Friday, 3 or 7PM). What is Christ’s “passion?” Was it simply His suffering? In common English, the word “passion” no longer means suffering (from the Latin pati, from where we get the word “patient”), but rather intense emotion, excitement, or desire. We speak of “crimes of passion”; people are passionate about their hobbies, sports, or politics. Jesus had an intense love for the Father, and complete investment in the Father’s plan of salvation, so certainly He was passionate about His mission. We recall Jesus crying and afraid, intensely emotional.

St. Paul shockingly reminds us that we can “fill up what is lacking in the afflictions of Christ on behalf of His Body which is the Church” (Colossians 1:24). God help us that we should ever experience such intense suffering from violence or torture, but to the extent that we or anyone we know suffers physical or emotional pain, we can and should identify our own sufferings as the afflictions of Christ. But we can also beg the Lord that we may be passionate about the Father’s will for us, fully invested in the life and love of Christ in our own lives. We may even be blessed with intense feelings of love and compassion for Christ as we see the sufferings of others, or see if we can’t be at least as passionate about our Christianity as we are about stamp collecting, or baseball, or travel (or whatever captures your attention to the point of spending lots of time and money on it).

In these coming days, I invite you to read at least one of the stories of Christ’s passion, not only to identify what “passion” meant to Jesus but what it means to you, a member of Christ’s body: see Matthew chapters 26-27, Mark 14-15, Luke 22-23, and John 13-19. Can we be as passionate about our relationship with Jesus Christ, and showing it to others, as we are about entertainment, making money, or antiques? That is my hope for us all, individually and as a parish, that our personal relationship with Christ can be so heartfelt and obvious!

Holy Land Collection │ March 30 • Good Friday

Christians around the world are united in a special way during Lent, Holy Week and Easter. Our hearts, minds and prayers are also especially aware of the Holy Land. Our parish, once a year on Good Friday, is called on to support Christians, the Living Stones of the Holy Land. Many

Christians in the Holy Land depend on this collection for their well-being.

As a pontifical collection requested by Pope Francis, the annual Good Friday Collection offers a direct link for parishioners to be witnesses of peace and to help protect the Holy Places. When you donate on Good Friday, you are also supporting Christians in the Holy Land. Franciscans

and others in the Holy Land are housing and feeding the poor, providing religious formation and education, maintaining shrines and parishes, and conducting pastoral ministry. For more

information, visit www.MyFranciscan.org. The Good Friday Collection is requested by the Holy Father. Please be as generous as your abundance allows.
