OUR ELECT AND CANDIDATES!

For those coming into the Catholic Church at Easter, Lent is known as the period of Purification and

Enlightenment. During the 3rd, 4th, and 5th Sundays of Lent, our Elect (those preparing to be baptized at Easter

Vigil) have taken or will take part in the Scrutinies at the 10:30 am Masses. Each scrutiny has time dedicated to

silent prayer, intercessions for the Elect, and an exorcism -- not of the Devil -- but of the evil, darkness, or

weaknesses in their lives that weigh them down or hold them back from making that step of coming to the

baptismal font and being reborn. The Scrutinies are meant to uncover and heal all that is weak, defective, or sinful,

and to strengthen all that is good and strong.

Through the Rites, we, as parishioners, are called to be "our best selves" in caring for and supporting the

people who will be joining our family. This week, we introduce you to Braydon, Marissa, Aaron, and Jamie . . .

Please welcome them, encourage them, and keep them in your prayers!

Braydon M. is in the 4th grade at St. Helen School. He likes pizza rolls, breadsticks with mari-

nara, and the color blue. Braydon enjoys swimming, riding bikes, playing video games, and

learning about God. He says that his favorite part of Mass is everything, because he is in God’s

presence. Braydon says, “My favorite place to pray is anywhere, everywhere, any time, and eve-

ry place.” He is looking forward to being baptized and receiving the Body and Blood of Christ,

because he wants to be closer to God. Braydon chose his godparents because he feels very close

to them and they are helping him to follow Jesus. Because of a shared concern for animals, the

earth, and people, Braydon has chosen Noah as his Confirmation name. Braydon thanks God for faith and for tak-

ing care of him and his loved ones.

Marissa N. is a 4th grader at St. Helen School. Her favorite foods are ice cream and pizza, and

she likes to draw, read, and spend time with friends and family. Marissa says she notices God’s

presence the most when she is in church and when she is with friends. Marissa says, “I want to

be baptized, so I can follow in the Light of Christ.” She likes to pray and sing at Mass, especial-

ly “Somebody’s Knockin’ at Your Door.” Marissa chose her godparents because they are mod-

els of faith who are helping to her to follow Jesus. She has chosen Mary as her Confirmation

name, because Mary trusted God and followed Jesus. Marissa thanks God for her younger sib-

lings, and for having family and friends to love her.

Aaron Brown - My family is from the Greenville area, however I was raised in

Dayton for most of my life. I am the Senior automotive technician for Firestone.

Favorite candy; Reese Cups. Favorite sports teams: Dallas Cowboys, Cavaliers,

Ohio State Why do you want to become Catholic? I became interested in

becoming Catholic once my older son started attending St. Helens. He would come

home and tell us everything he was learning in religion. He truly enjoys and loves

learning about God and has inspired me to grow my relationship with God.

Favorite RCIA Session? My favorite RICA session was learning about the

Eucharist with Father Satish. How can the parish pray for you? I would ask the parish to pray for support and

guidance as I continue to grow in the Catholic faith.

Jamie Brown - I grew up in a Military family, born in Germany and lived in Kentucky for a long time. Eventually

my family came back to Dayton where my family is from when I was in the 6th grade. I am a Nurse at

Dermatologist of Southwest Ohio. Favorite candy? KitKats. Favorite sports teams? Dallas Cowboys and

Ohio State Why do you want to be Catholic? I grew up going to church and have always had a relationship

with God, but had lost some of the connection as I got older. After our son started attending St. Helens he had

more questions and I wanted to be able to help guide him. The more I learned the more I felt drawn to the

Catholic faith. Favorite RCIA session? My favorite RCIA session was when we received the Oil of

Catechumens. How can the parish pray for you? I ask that the Parish pray for God to help guide me as I

complete the RCIA process and for support in my growing faith.

FOURTH SUNDAY OF LENT

CHANGE TO OUR GOOD FRIDAY SERVICE On Friday of the Passion of the Lord (Good Friday), we will offer a service at 1 p.m.

only this year. There will be no service at 7 p.m. Given the hour of Jesus’s death, the cele-

bration of the Lord’s Passion should take place in the afternoon. The Roman Missal indicates

that “if….[there is] pastoral need for an additional liturgical service, the Diocesan Bishop may

permit the service to be repeated later.” Unfortunately, over the last several years, our com-

bined attendance between the 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. services would barely have filled half of the

church. Last year, it was less than half. With the attendance and the challenge of finding avail-

able priests during the Triduum, we can no longer sustain two services. Let us pray together in

hope at the afternoon liturgy!

ARE YOU LOOKING FOR ONE-TIME WAYS TO HELP THE PARISH?

WE HAVE THE FOLLOWING NEEDS:

Church Cleaning! Lots of individuals or families to help us clean the church: wash the

wood in the sanctuary and the chairs and pillars in the chapels, and oil the Stations of the

Cross. There are 548 chairs in the nave, 44 on the east side, 34 on the west side, 45 in the

Blessed Sacrament Chapel, and 48 in loft, not to mention all the pillars! Join us on Tuesday,

March 20 any time from 6:00 to 8:30. We will provide the cleaning liquids and snacks. You

bring buckets and rags . . . and family or friends!!! Last year, we made a fun video of our-

selves “toiling away” and singing !

Palm Fest! 8-10 people on Thursday, March 22 at 9:00 a.m. in the Helen Room to help

us strip palms to prepare them for Palm Sunday! No experience necessary!!! Continental

SUNG SOLEMN VESPERS Solemn Vespers will be held on Sunday, March

18 at 7:00 PM in the Chapel of St. Gregory the Great at

Mount St. Mary’s Seminary, 6616 Beechmont Avenue,

Cincinnati, OH 45230. As we prepare for the Sacred Tridu-

um, come pray the psalms and canticles of Vespers for the

Fifth Sunday of Lent. In addition to the liturgical chants of

Vespers, the Mount St. Mary’s Latin Schola and the Athe-

naeum Chorale will perform selections from the Tenebrae

liturgy of Holy Week, including the chanted Lamentations

of Jeremiah and sacred motets by Ingegneri. There is no

admission charge. All are welcome.

OUTCASTS FILM SCREENING “A night of inspiration, testimony, and prayer for
